Bloodborne - GOTD edition

Someone above suggested doing it before completing a boss with initials MWN (don't know what it stands for) to get a little bit of dialogue.

I'm near the end of the game I think and I still have encountered a boss with those initials.

I really love the Forbidden Woods area. It's so sprawling, and dark, and confusing when you first explore it, but after a few runs through the game I now know it like the back of my hand and can clear it in no time at all.

However, if you want to just progress it's not as confusing as you think - the main path through is lit, so you can just tear right through it if you're getting snagged up on the various side paths.

One small hint I would offer you:

Yes at first I found it a bit intimidating but I quickly discovered all the little nooks and hidden paths. I  know the area you're talking about in the spoiler as I've already been past it and found the hidden stuff :)

Am up to Level 48 now. When I was playing first time around I was using the RS mostly but I've switched to LHB now and am liking it but I do miss the R2 attack with the RS as its pretty deadly on some enemies.

Was trying to work out what the glowy frenzy ball was...Mensis, Amgy, etc....

Forgot the place is called Mergo's Loft based on the Lantern.

It's Mergo! Obviously. Mergo.

Mystery solved.

Now what's a Mergo?

I played this game last night for the first time in about 3 months. When I left playing it in November I was in the forbidden woods.

Took me a little while to get used to the combat again but I found myself shaking my head and asking myself the question: 'Why the fuck did I stop playing this for Star Wars bleeding Battlefront!?!'

It's like I had forgotten how much damn fun this game's combat is. Not only that but the enemy and level design is top notch with some clever little environmental traps as well. I think I stopped playing partly because I wasn't enjoying it as much and found it a bit tense first time around. This time, however, I just told myself to enjoy and go with the flow. Seemed to work pretty well as I made some good progress last night despite losing 50k blood echoes at one point.

I got a bit cocky with the mini death eater standing near the bit where you have to go across the roof tops that drops down to the oily swamp. And also didn't take enough care to avoid that cannonball shooting git while engaged with fighting some villagers.

More importantly, I had fun and that's what's gonna keep me playing the game. I know it's challenging but I'm determined to rise to it as it's one of those games that reveals so much if you put the effort in.

It was the same for me having got sucked into Destiny.  I struggled at first to get to grips with Bloodborne again when I came back and to work out what I had already done and should be doing next but once it clicked I've been hooked ever since.

i've had a couple of goes at MWN in the main story so have concentrated on the DLC.  I think I am close to the end of this now but being soundly beaten by

Spoiler

The Orphan of Kos

i got so close with some help from a friendly hunter but then lost my bearings and killed instantly by some attack I didn't see coming.

Havent got anywhere near close since.

I've also hit an impasse with the chalice dungeon so spent a bit of time helping others with boss fights, which was good fun.  Shame it doesn't let you know it the other person eventually beat the boss if you get killed early though.

Am off sick today but managed to drag myself out of bed whilst my wife took the kids to the dentist. Got up to boss 2 of the lower loran chalice, abhorrent beast. I got rekt but he seems doable. My biggest worry is the darkbeast paarl variant at layer 3. He was a bit of a nemesis of mine during the main game so not looking forward to that.

I took the plunge and levelled up the beast cutter to +10. It's range and crowd control is off the scale.

God knows what level I am now though. 130ish I think. I've got Vit and Str up to 50 so may start looking at Arc so I can use some of those toys or maybe Ski so I can try out the rakuyo.

I need another character don't I? Oh god, I'm supposed to be playing Dark Souls 2 anyway.

If I die early I tend to go back to where I fought the boss and ring the resonant bell and see if they come back. Generally you'll hook up with same player if they failed. It's the least I can do when I've been a plum and died.

Sadly not!

Spoiler

Mergo is the infant great one you hear crying throughout the world after killing Rom. The glowing brain thing is the Brain of Mensis, a supposed Great One summoned by the school of Mensis and Micolash that is actually a bit shit. I'll say no more about Mergo as I'm not too sure how far through the game you are!

I was Frenzy Res geared up and the 200 Rea rune

they seemed impossible to sneak up on, los with the rocks was annoying and saw through blue elixirs. Ended up just smashing them and out healing frenzy,

Then realised an optional area albeit with a nice reward

Spoiler

+10!

A nice reward indeed. It used to be the only one in the main game until the DLC, and you can now buy them for 60 Insight. I've got 4 at the moment that I'm trying to decide what to do with.

I hardly ever use stuff like blue elixir, throwing knives, any shit I am carrying apart from blood healing.

anyone else in the same camp?

there are things I haven't got a feckin clue what they do....options to eat them wtf???

Blue Elixir I use all the time. Great for sneaking up on people!

I used throwing knives, poison knives etc when I was desperate on my first play through but I rarely bother now. Likewise Molotovs etc.

The arcane toys are fun though, once you've got them all and the stats to use them.

I played through Cainhurst tonight in what felt like about 30 minutes. Amazing how actual experience (as opposed to exp points) shrinks the space in these games.

I didn't either until  recently. For some reason it always felt like I was cheating by using a blue elixir and getting an easy backstab or something.

Since giving speedrunning a go, I've found some of the extra items to be amazingly useful.

Yes! Loran Darkbeast down. Got a Blood Rock for my troubles too. Is that normal? Had no idea they dropped from bosses.

Whilst I don't think the chalice dungeons are quite as bad as some people think (bonfireside chat!) they do go on a bit and could have done with having a few less to do. I'm ready to go full on co-op and PvP now, I've really been enjoying dropping in and out of others games, but I've still got two more to do. Still Isz next, haven't done one of those yet.

The guide says there is an 8% chance of a rock dropping from a level 3 boss in a depth 5 dungeon.

This kept me up until early 2am last night. A game I've nearly completed 4 times. Incredible.

I killed Ebrietas first try, having spent most of the other evening stuck on her. Not sure why I was struggling really. Then Cainhurst, which as mentioned up thread seemed to take no time at all. Did Marty L first try. Then I had a quick run through Nightmare Frontier (I didn't fancy scouring every last book and cranny), culminating in a great fight against Amygdala. For some reason she seemed more aggressive than usual, and it made for a frantic scrap in parts.

I also decided to take the Threaded Cane and Beast Claw to +10. Need some more chunks now as I have loads of other weapons at +7 or +8 and two Blood Rocks waiting.

I decided to take a detour in the Forbidden Woods last night and:

Spoiler

Ended up in some weird cave with poisonous water. After dying once I went back in and eventually up a ladder which led to Iosefka's clinic back in Central Yarnham! Talk about surprised. I guess I shouldn't have been that shocked that she turned out to be an impostor but I did like that the weird cannibal guy that I met in the woods and ended up sending to the clinic, turned into some weird blobby alien looking thing! Dispatched him easily but decided against fighting Iosefka for now.

Trying to decide whether to complete the FW's or go to CC which I have an invite for. Could even go back to Yahar'gul as well. Is there an optimal path? Or does it not really matter? I'm currently Level 51 so I guess it would be good to go to the place that's most suitable for my level.

The further you go in the game the more twisted the Lovecraftian nightmare becomes. It's like the worst elements of someone's disturbed psyche laid out before you in glorious hi res detail.

Also wanted to ask about visceral attacks. Do you have to be standing within an certain range (i.e damn close?) before you can do one? I know it's only a small window that you get but it seems quite random whether I can manage to do one or not. Do you hold R1 down or just press it?
