Bloodborne - GOTD edition

Yes, I've frequently thought that as I've played it. I know Spainkiller has compared the two series as well and he's right.

could not agree more. In particular NoM later on which literally takes place in a castle.

Dunno I think BB is better for the world exploration myself tbh, but DS1 is certainly more like BB in that regard.

And certainly do bother with DS2 at some point! Covenants, PvP, respeccing, magic builds, NG+ it definitely did some stuff better that BB inexplicably didn't try and build on. Definitely more of an "RPG" experience though and lacks the atmosphere, lore and overall design of the Miyazaki games.

Can't comment on PvP but I don't think DS2 does any of those other things better than the first game outside of respec, which I think is a bad feature to add in. It's souls combat with all the other stuff stripped back. I can see why people like it but it's got zero effort put into creating it's open world, with the focus instead on creating separate areas and then just sticking them together. Enemy and equipment designs are largely either lifted from the first game or just copied from its ideas.

Oh yeah, I've been meaning to ask - Insight. So far as I can tell it's just used to summon other players. Since I'm playing solo, can I just spend it? I've got quite a bit now, having hoovered up a load of Madman's Knowledges - about 30 I think. I would like some nice Fire Paper...

it does other stuff too, like alter enemies attacks and their placement, I believe. Some you won't even see with low insight.

Sorry if this has been asked - but don't want to look too far into this thread in case of spoilers!

I'm a casual gamer and games like this don't usually catch my attention - but the reviews and videos I have watched make me want it. Is this too much game for a casual gamer? I guess I mean in the sense of difficulty and the time needed to invest into it.

Really?!? Respec is a great feature if you want to actually try out different builds without having to run through the entire game again just to get the right stats/weapons.

Whilst I certainly prefer BB and DS1 to DS2, as I've said in the DS2 thread, I still think DS2 gets a lot of unwarranted hate. It did some stuff right, it did some stuff wrong, but the idea it is a bad game is ludicrous and the fact that, for the multiplayer stuff, BB is a big step back is somewhat inexplicable (at the moment anyway - I have faith they will patch it to something that works better sooner rather than later).

I don't think its a bad game at all, but I feel that's its substantially worse than DS1 is almost every way I can think of. I'd consider DS2 to be a fairly normal game, a solid 7 or 8 out of 10 but nothing close to the majesty of the first game.

Respec I feel takes away from the permanent consequences of the choices you made along the way and makes me feel like rather than building up my character into something I've just earned magic points I can use for whatever.

I'm planning to play DS next (not Demons though)

Chinny reckon, mate. Once you've rinsed this, and then Dark Souls, and no other games can scratch the itch, you'll be all over Demon's and be like OMG I WAS SO WRONG.

So who/what the fuck are we talking about?

Hehe I can't help but chuckle at the irony of this.. the guy who was so keen not to miss stuff he used guides from day one, managed to miss something! ;)

Honestly? Yes, it's too much for a casual gamer. But if you get into it, you won't be so casual about it. It's one of the most addictive videogames I've ever played, and that's partly because of how tough it is. Some nights I play it and do nothing by die, and die, and die again. You feel like you've gotten nowhere. And then, BOOM! You get a new item, or unlock a new shortcut, and more of it unravels. It's impossible to resist.

I often say I don't have time to play games anymore, but when a game like this comes along, somehow I find time. Hence the big bags under my eyes caused by the 2am bedtimes.

Honestly I would just watch a beginner's guide on Youtube. That'll give you best idea.

Edit: This one:

Ooh, now that is interesting. So potentially I could miss out on some stuff if I blow it? Perhaps I'll stick to using Blood Echoes.

As far as I understand it, and in as basic terms as possible..

high insight = harder game

This thread is fucking ridiculous. I don't recall people spoiler tagging or abbreviating place names and certain people in the Skyrim thread when that came it.

This thread has gone too fucking far.

Such a weird attitude.

Use the map I posted and pipe down.

Although I find your meltdowns pretty funny so don't stop.

I actually missed a good chunk on my first playthrough: AW, UCW, IC, and CC.

I recall only one boss in UCW, and that was CE.

That second boss is fucked up. Be glad you missed it.

:hat:

I stand by my comments regarding this thread though. It strikes me as a bit daft.

Remember the sky and the cosmos are one therefore eventually time for being daft.

It's allowed me to keep reading without anything having been spoiled during my first run. Why would I assume to not keep that up for others who aren't playing at the same pace?

Yeah come to think about it. Same here. I would not have read this thread as much as I have if it weren't for how careful everyone is. it's been fucking awesome. I wish I'd had this when I played DaS as this has become a meta-game for me . It has also helped me to not miss important things in the game, while also still enjoying finding things out of my own.

But the thing is, I read about places that are hard or what enemies and strategies are used. Then when I get there I don't actually know that this is what they meant until I start seeing it for myself. And that little game becomes awesome. Then I come back and read again and it all makes sense. Maybe just be. But I have been loving it.

I'm all about the

Rifle Spear

at the moment. Has a ludicrous reach, but of course the downside is that if you mis-time the charge attack...

The Pillars of Eternity thread has plenty of open talk mentioning places and character names. No one's grumbling about spoilers or abbreviations in there.

Anyway, I'm clearly in the minority on this. So what does it matter.

Not only that, but abbreviating a name is easier than typing the full one. So it does no harm.

I'll be doing a stream of this for Gamestyle tonight at around 8PM on Twitch.

Looking to have viewers guide me through the game from start to finish over a number of weeks. Would be great if some of you could watch and give feedback...maybe even join in with the chat.

Cheers.

I think it's a difficult thing, because people are clearly happy with the way it's been done, but like you I think the name abbreviations are crazy and massively frustrating. As I've read through if I've not been able to figure out the abbreviation on the first pass I just ignore the post, having spent the first few days trying to figure out what every one was. There's a bunch of posts in here that I've not replied to because I couldn't be bothered to stare at the acronym for three seconds to figure it out, so whilst it might have been good for spoilerphobic readers it's not necessarily been very helpful in discussing the actual game.

But surely that's the point of the tagging, if you have no idea who the boss is, you obviously haven't met it yet so no spoilers, other than obviously the existence of the boss can occur.

I've also completed the game once & there's several boss abbreviations & a location I've not encountered, namely UCW which I'm hoping is where these bosses reside.

Currently I've started a new play through & used the speed running trick to access FW from the start, which has been a lot of fun & means my weapon is now at +6 before I've even fought a single boss, hehe.
