Bloodborne - GOTD edition

I disagree that the story is bobbins, I actually think it's really well-developed. It's only there if you go looking for it though, and if you appreciate trying to piece together fragments of what's going on from notes in the game world and item descriptions in the inventory. I love the mystique of it all, even the boss names get your imagination fired up - 'Cleric' beast?!

That's just the impression from my first ( spoiler-free ) play through, I am hopeful that further play throughs change my opinion of this.

Although to be perfectly honest, I'd still be stuck after VA if I hadn't had asked on here as

I would never have found the appropriate door after the cutscene, let alone have known that I somehow had a password.

So yes, bobbins is perhaps unfair but if it is indeed well developed, it's also very well hidden. ;)

The story is amazing. It's basically an ARG within the game. You do have to do a bit of detective work to grasp most of it, but I really like watching YouTube vids that go into real detail about the stuff I'd never notice otherwise.

Fighting MWN at present - seems like a straightforward game of bait and counter, but man it can drag on. I had her down to a couple of hits whilst still carrying 8 vials but then I got way too greedy. :)

Also, it's reminded me that I dash away from things way too much - dashing in to get hits in on someone when it's safe is an underrated tactic. :P

Hehe, and nice work to you, sir! Awesome we're at the same point, pretty much. Though I'm now worried I got 'easy' versions of those bosses BUT I DON'T CARE, THEY ARE DEAD. What weapon you rocking? I feel a bit like I'm cheating with Ludwig's sometimes, it staggers some enemies so badly.

I'm a fair way behind in terms of levels though, I'm only 64 or something! Not sure on hours played, probably between 35-40 right now.

So, my to do list is now:

- beat Martyr

- beat the Hunter @ the Cathedral

- find a buddy to help me through N. Frontier (just because I think it'll be fun to coop since the pvp is always on)

- Carry on through the 'story'; i.e. Lecture hall floor 2

I'm rocking a +9 Cane, +8 Ludwigs and +6 pistol as my main kit setup.

My 'to do' list is a little different (probably where the slight level gap comes in actually)...

- Kill Ebrietas

- Kill hunter in cathedral

- Kill hunters in UV chapel

- Get through NoM to continue the story

- Check up on my little rescued friends in the healing chapel (one had run off and been killed just outside when I last went back)

Everything else I've discovered so far is boxed off I think.

Re: Boss easy mode... I don't think so mate. I think with E you were

just close enough not to provoke the laser attack

I do have a general question about a slightly weird item(s) I've found (spoilered just in case it gives anything away but I found the first via FW and reference something from LB2 for those that aren't there yet)...

One Third Umbilical Cords (shudder)... I was looking through my inventory at the range of things I've picked up and never used and found I have two of these. I think one was from Iosefka, not sure where the second one came from. I also found a note in LB2 saying 'Three third cords' but nothing else. It all sounds a bit plotty so I was wondering if...

a) They do anything?

b) Should I keep hold of them, or 'consume' (shudder again) them for the insight?

c) Does anyone have any hints on where I find the third one?

RE: This being more confusing than Dark Souls it definitely is, both in terms of the story and directing you through the game. It's also far worse at clearly telling you that you've accomplished something, but that's the fault of the reduced selection of items.

Generally though I'd say the broad consensus is that this is very, very good, much better than DS2 for the most part and hovering somewhere around the quality of the first two (I think it reaches that level, others think it is a little short of the mark).

Is that really the broad consensus? For me it is a great game, but not as good as any of the first three games.

And much better than Dark Souls 2? Not for me. Most of the reasons have been discussed but for me it just isnt anywhere as deep due to the lack of genuinely different builds and approachs, like all the other games had. The blood vial vs estus is really annoying too.

With all the other games, including dark souls 2, in fact especially dark souls 2, the first thing I did when I completed it was start it again with a different character. And I was finding new things and secrets for months. For me Bloodborne just doesnt have that, and thats why all the other games trump it.

Still absolutely brilliant mind :D

MWN down! That wasn't one of Bloodborne's finer bosses - impatience killed me more than anything, as if you just wait for the openings from the big attacks before going in with the blade it's not a big deal (although I didn't help myself by using the untransformed saw cleaver.) Onwards :)

Goddamn, that M:HotN is annoying. He's not even that difficult, it's just that it takes ages to bait him into where you want him and then he can one-hit KO you with his magic blast attack that you no longer have any stamina left to dodge because you've been wailing at him like a loon. Got him nailed just now, but took me three goes for shame.

You could always cheese him by standing at the top of the balcony when he jumps down and tossing poison knives at him until he dies!

DP down as well! It probably seems unusual that I've waited so long to take him on again, but that first encounter was pretty offputting. Going in again at level 68 was as daft as you'd expect - the light hits from my cleaver were taking big chunks off his lifebar.

Sorry if you think DS2 is better than this (and I am a big DS2 advocate) then you are definitely an outlier.

Edit: should clarify as well when I talk consensus I'm not just talking about this forum, I'm talking GAF, Reddit, youtubers etc.

Harry, man. Don't give up! It gets so good once you've gone passed him, too! Is there anywhere else you can go? Write me a list of your hunting achievements! :) see if I can point you in the direction of a distraction which may raise your spirits and reignite your vigour!

Just found BSB. Got him down to about an inch before dying.

I don't think I'll like a single boss fight in this. I'm not a fan of them in general but they really are no fun in this. Plus stuff like the camera really adds to the frustration.

Really enjoying everything else about it though.

You can't miss the third one.

You can consume them, yes. If I go on I'd be spoiling stuff though. Are you planning on NG+ runs at all?

Cheers. I'll have a nibble on them (urgh) and see what happens then. Not sure about NG+ yet, we'll see how the final act goes.

@fivefootninja Ha, I'd wondered the same about those items. Couldn't use them because they seemed too special and who the fuck wants loads of insight anyway. Nailed it. :D

I could do with a bit actually, I'm only on 1 insight after all that UCW brain sucking!

Just went back to the cathedral...

...and killed the hunter there. I didn't realise it was the crow woman! Not sure what beef she had with me because last time I spoke to her it was all friendly. Oh well.
