The Rllmuk Photography Thread

Posted a few images here and there in this thread but it's been a while since I had a splurge so a few from the last couple of months:

Playing the Instagram game here, I find a lot of street photography very formulaic, this is perfect example of low effort stuff which seems to go down well. This is just a street in the very centre of Birmingham where one road goes over the top of another, stood there for all of a minute before a guy walked past. People seem to really like looking at pictures of other people walking into shadows.

I do kinda like this one though.  Smeg knows what she's just seen or thought of, but it makes for an interesting shot.

One I took on my phone in Barcelona.  Kinda wish I'd had a real camera as I think the neon ("eat better, be happier, live longer") would have been easier to read but I still kinda like it.

Barcelona again, there are countless streets like this in the Gothic Quarter.

Where we stayed in the Lake District.  This was taken with one of those famous Soviet Helios 44-2 lenses (58mm f2), cheap as chips on eBay give ridiculous bokeh wide open and are pretty sharp stepped down. Well worth a look at if you are into vintage stuff and don't already have one.

Had a quick go at shooting the Milky Way while in the lake district.  I just drove a mile from the cottage and did this from a lay by as I really don't know what I'm doing. Got mad respect for those folk who hike up hills and pitch a tent to get the perfect composition.

Playing with Fuji jpegs.  They are very impressive.

More Fuji jpeg stuff.  Think this was stepped down to F16 or something, shooting directly into sunlight.

Had to crop this to remove a couple of reflections as it was through a sheet of glass, which (presumably) is there to stop people jumping over the wall and onto the 25k volt wires which power the trams.

Another on that Helios lens.  Dunno what I like about this shot, but there is something.

DSCF6829.jpg

Found this one too, not really "for inclusion" (so to speak) but that Helios lens wide open in front of some fairy lights which were strung out across the street.  Nice portrait lens I guess.

Had a little holiday to the Isles of Scilly stopping at the Eden Project on the way down. Sadly the weather has been poop and mostly flat grey which is a shame because the Isles of Scilly are absolutely beautiful...

Summer means a photography break so I haven't taken much....

Saw a poppy field near my work so I headed back a few days later, unfortunately all the flowers had dropped off by then...

Opium Sunrise

Spent a couple of days in the Mach loop in July, cracking fun!

F-15E - Mach Loop - I'm pretty sure it's left up here...

I even managed to get some Landscape stuff in..

The Ogwen Valley-1.jpg

This was a USAF F-35A at RIATUSAF - F35A - Into the blue

Spent last week up in the city on a course... managed to get out and get some shots, I'm probably going to head up one sunday for a day of architecture stuff as the city is dead on Sundays.

Walkie TalkieThe ThamesThe Stair Case

And on Sunday i was at Victorious to watch the prodigy.... Only took a small handfull of shots..The Prodigy

Those are amazing. I've just taken up photography as a hobby. Zero experience. Bought a Nikon D3400 and kit lens. Currently watching every YouTube video under the sun. I've been thinking about going to Bank station on a Friday evening when it's like a ghost town, but I don't really know what I'm doing. Seeing photos like that is a great motivator for me to keep learning, so thanks!

Anyway, here's my favourite picture I've taken so far. It took me aaaaaages to figure out how to get it how I wanted it in Lightroom.

Top tips

1. Take a lot of photos

2. Experiment

3. Develop a mild photo book addiction for inspiration.

Digbeth, Birmingham. Went back to the work in progress (above) to see it completed.

39875954_2656899674536081_39563763163022

Was just dicking around here but kinda liked the shot.  Its the Undercroft on the South Bank, took at about 10pm, handheld through a 200m lens in jpeg. Really impressed with how the camera handled it.

41427055_304326363480292_165599054015455

Same lens, albeit on a tripod, a couple of miles away at 7:30am. jpeg again.  Not sure what the deal with all the scaffolding is, but this is pretty much where the Westway ends at Paddington.  I just liked how obvious it is which way the city centre is.

40379541_692026207833674_560244971823073

More jpeg. Helios 44-2 lens, it's an old Soviet lens which always seems to be dead cheap on eBay. Mad bokeh at f2, this was stepped down to f11 (I think) in really harsh midday sun. I just like that this street still has cobbles, it's just round the corner from Edgware Road tube, probably a quarter of a mile from the Westway photo.

39397325_277570199638049_384727832617969

Alleyway off of Portobello Road, the day after the carnival.

39750767_2075464625837133_92143218492723

Kensington Gardens.  Took longer than I am willing to admit to get a shot with nobody in it.  My son was with me and I think I was pissing him off.

40504604_1695300380580248_59306252394276

Some restaurant window back in Birmingham.  Kinda liked all the stuff hiding in the shadows.

Thanks man. I think that's the kind of vibe I like. I have this constant confidence crisis though that it looks how I want but it's full of a load of technical mistakes, lolz. But fuck it. I'm really enjoying it, and learning every day, and trying to stop myself rushing into buying a new lens etc!

One thing I'm having a problem with though... I'll shoot in raw. Get it how I want it in Lightroom. Export it to jpg. It looks different, but ok. I'll upload it to Google Drive. Then download it from there on my phone to put on Instagram. And it looks different again. Is that normal, or am I doing stuff wrong?

Cheers

Why convert it to work on lightroom ? leave it in raw to work on then export out the adjusted image as a JPEG. and leave the raw file as it was.

Lightroom always seems to do a little off the cuff processing when i first import a raw file,  but then i do whatever i'm going to do to the picture and export that out. I never treat the raw file as anything other than a starting point even if it's just a crop or straighten.

Then I upload the saved jpeg to Flickr and then from there, using the flickr app on my phone to Instagram. I think Drive does some compressing, Flickr is uncompressed as far as i know, so then the instagram images should be as close to the original lightroom jpeg export as you can get.

Of course it would all be so much easier if Instagram and lightroom could talk to each other on the PC .... but great minds than ours have decided than is a bad thing :(
