Padaxes
When i first watched it I felt the same . But I recently rewatched the first episode and really enjoyed it, maybe its just better the second time around.
FiveFootNinja
Been a bit late to the season 5 party but just finished episode 5 and I am absolutely loving it. What a programme this is
FiveFootNinja
Boxed this off today, really really good. Can’t wait for the next/final one! I wasn’t expecting… Spoiler The way they wrote Alex out of it. I knew it was coming but it was pretty abrupt/ham-fisted in the end. Am I right that the… Spoiler …fate of the Barkeith in the final scene was similar to the station that disintegrated above Venus many episodes ago? Again it seemed to just get chucked out there as if we needed convincing to come back.
Benny
Something I loved about that scene in your second spoiler Spoiler Was how arrogant and self important they were being about everything and setup as a threat, then just "poof!"
Alex W.
There was a tease about it at the end of S2 or S3 with Holden too. Just little hints at something coming.

What’s actually happening in that scene isn’t really very well explained and most of the context for it was provided in the fourth season with very little reference to it in the fifth. Spoiler It’s not the same as what happened on Venus - that was the OG protomolecule doing its thing. The force that takes out the Barkieth is whatever killed the protomolecule creators - it doesn’t disassemble the ship like what happened on Venus, it completely wipes it out of existence. Almost everything to do with this other power was covered in all the Miller hijinx on the alien planet in season four so it’s easy to forget, I don’t know why they didn’t stick in a brief reminder before the Barkieth scene.
FiveFootNinja
Ah, that’s where it was from! Knew I’d seen it but the brain wasn’t firing on all cylinders. Thanks, @Flanders @Benny Totally agree
Ninja Doctor
So I’m at this point with the dead tree medium versions. Do I plough on through those or do the video version first?

Do I plough on through those or do the video version first? Do you mean you've caught up to where the show is? If so, the last series isn't going to cover all of the remaining material from the pulp-based nameless objects, so probably best to stop with those for now and wait for series 6 to come out. Then crack on if you want the rest of the story.
Ninja Doctor
Yeah I think that’s my plan. So far though they’ve kept to the books pretty accurately with a few exceptions.

Gommy
New series of the expanse good. Only 6 episodes bad. Last ever series bad. It is at least getting an ending and somewhat amazingly it did get saved from earlier cancellation, good.

MDY
The Polygon article mentions the final episode is 20 minutes longer than usual at 65 mins.. (Though plenty of episodes in S4 and S5 have clocked in over 50 mins already.. ) https://www.polygon.com/22717128/the-expanse-final-season-comic-con
Spacehost
In fairness they did the entirety of book 3 in 7 episodes without losing anything critical.
lolly
I've started rewatching from series 1 in preparation for the final series, really has been one of the most consistently decent series I can remember. Dear jebus I hope they stick the landing.
PeteJ
Still on my first watch through, just finished season 3. My god. The sudden gear change and pace for the second half of the season was immense. So good, can't wait for season 4! Now to get out of this thread again before I read anything I shouldn't.
