The Expanse

I’m really enjoying this series but I reckon the pacing issues that some people have are a byproduct of Holden being relatively sidelined - while it’s true that the likes of Naomi and Amos are more interesting characters played by better actors, Holden has always been this show’s main instigator to move plot forward.

A lot of characters have been sidelined this season - Avasarala, Holden, Bobbi and Alex haven't had a ton to do.

But Naomi and Amos are more than enough to keep me happily occupied. Naomi's arc would have been better if her kid was a stronger actor.

Drummer and her crew also haven't done much in terms of plot but I really enjoy their interaction.

Series finale will be him ripping his flightsuit off, Liquid Snake style, to have fisticuffs with Holden atop the nose of the Rocinante, thus revealing his whole torso to be one big mosaic of belta tats.

come on man, no book spoilers!

Spoiler

This was maybe the most disappointing episode this season, tied into the knowledge that there is only 1 more episode it felt largely like nothing got pushed forward.

Not a bad episode, just a bit close to filler.  Last season we had team Rocinante, Avarasala, Mars and maybe Medina station?

This season we have Amos,Naomi, Rocinante, Avarasala, Drummer, Inaros, Bobby and Alex.

Expanding Drummer e.t.c has been good but it is spreading story coverage quite thin overall.  Coupled with some very heavy episode bits like Naomi i do really want more episodes to cover more ground overall.

Just watched the Ty and that guy myself and it's a good one. Talks about Clarissa a lot of course, but also the growth of certain characters, why it's not a filler episode and the difficulty of making the shoot-out a single take. First time they used real blanks apparently.

Loved that episode. Felt like you got a bit of everything.

Spoiler

But the Amos and Peaches segment was obviously the main story going on. I was impressed how the really short conversation with Amos with that one character over a drink led to caring about what happens to them later. Simple but effective character work.

Spoiler

Not surprised that Naomis efforts had the result it did ('what, she's alive? Ok lets SPEED UP'), but am surprised that she's still finding ways to fuck with the ship while keeping us guessing at how.

Also surprised Drummer still hasnt decked the interloper yet.

I did like how Amos's boy goes against type and doesnt do the usual dramatic anime betrayal. Instead him and his crew are loyal bros, just perpetually belligerent. :)

Holy shit that was good.

Spoiler

Did anyone else see something blue messing about and rippling at the door of Laconia gate in the opening credits? They’ve changed them subtly every episode this season.

I don’t know who’s going to fuck up Inaros more, Dummer, Naomi, Holden or Avasarala.

At this point I want stupid silver lipstick woman to get a John Malkovich style death scene from Con Air.

Another good episode.

Spoiler

I'm not sure about their positioning in the gunfight though, seems a bit unlikely they didnt all get mowed down.

But my main beef is

Spoiler

I was a bit dissapointed when they went through the ring and we had this weird series of colonists on an alien world. But it's even stranger now. There is the civilisation chaging tech floating there with FTL travel to other star systems and ... nothing seems to be happening with it.

Have I missed something fundemental here?

Why is everyone not fully mobilised colonising these new systems ? Why is the focus of everyone some terrorists , and why are the terrorists themselves not focused on the real prize?

Are the books like this ?

I am really enjoying the show, I just feel like the whole time I'm thinking "hey guys have you forgotten something?"

Difficult to say anything without saying too much so just don't worry about it? :)

The colonies are just more mouths to feed for inner planets that already refuse to extend aid to Belters. You saw what the colonies were like in the last season, a few Belter wildcatters staking a claim on a barely liveable rock and hoping to stay ahead of the boot of corporate interests by virtue of being months away from anything. That’s not something that’s going to magically change the politics of the solar system for the better.

Basically the same dynamic as any other colony rush in history. The European powers didn’t stop fighting each other at home when they started staking claims in Africa and America. Quite the opposite.

well Earth (and presumably Mars?) had a blockade set up to stop people going through the rings and the main issue of the election on Earth was that Avasarala's government wasn't moving quick enough to allow humanity's expansion. Presumably Marco's real goal is control of the ring for da belt.

Spoiler

The rings are mostly a narrative device to stir shit up with the various factions

There are colonists trying to go to other planets and the rings do come back to it, but it’s not a planet of the week series.

Even in the books when they’re on other planets, the authors stress how weird thing are.

Its good I think. Alien life and places should be borderline impossible for us to get our heads around

I've not enjoyed this season much at all, but I thought the last episode was brilliant. It has felt like for  lots of this season not much has been happening, especially with Naomi's hanging with the mass murderer gang. And Holden has been doing what? Just floating around the ship getting on everyone's tits by the looks of it.

I don't think they've done enough to make me feel bad for the belters, they come across as low level losers rather than impassioned freedom fighters. Having said that, the stuff on Drummer's ship has been excellent.

Is it just one episode left now? (and what day of the week do they come out?) I've watched it this week, and I've been really happy I waiting until (most) of the episodes were out - the pacing problems would have been more severe if I'd been watching week-by-week, I think.

It's a hard show to watch at times, with its major shifts in topics from season to season. But I've found Amos' adventures on Earth compelling, and Naomi's once the bad stuff goes down (I was a little bored with her time with Marco - it provides clear motivations for later, but wasn't the most riveting watch) and of course Drummer's problems. Holden and Alex, not so much, even if Bobby continues to be great. And Avasarala and her strand has been decent enough also.
