PlayStation VR

Can anyone explain to me how VR manages to completely reverse the whole "graphics get blockier as objects get closer" effect that games have traditionally suffered from? I was staring at the depth display during the Cage Dive last night, and it was just getting sharper, and sharper the closer I got.

 

I took some time to refine my setup last night. Moved the camera to the mantlepiece so that it's completely facing the sofa (The TV points diagonally into the room from an alcove), re-checked my eye distance, got some extra cushions for my back so I was sitting a bit more upright etc. I ran through some of the VR Worlds stuff again and it was just glorious. When it cuts to the pub in London Heist the table was just where it would be if there was a table in front of my sofa. I still wanted to stand up for the Cage Dive though, which I really took in this time. It really is something I'd pay money for more of, just to watch more sea life. In fact the shark attack, whilst still quite shocking, is now something I wish didn't happen. I prefer just watching it swim around, and I wish there were also whales, Hammerheads etc to just watch.

 

I haven't even really played anything properly on it yet, I'm still wallowing in the experience.

 

Oh, and Rush of Blood is so getting bought. Demo is awesome!

I played some RE7 out of VR last night, and it's just not the same.  It's fun and everything (if that's the right word for it), but you don't sense the same constant intense dread that VR forces on you.

 

Back in the VR tonight, for sure.  Constant intense dread FTW!

Short but sweet. Seen that written somewhere before.

 

All told, I completed the game in a single sitting, as did my sister, as will many people who play this, and I don't feel much incentive to play again anytime soon. At $20, that's not exactly a bargain.

Rush of blood is superb btw, one of the highlights of VR for me.  Your playing on a vanilla PS4 as well aint you? I tell you if you chuck a pro into the equation again then image quality is even better.

 

I remember my mind being blown in Driveclub leaning close to the dials and them all coming into focus. Its bloody witchcraft.

I just can't justify a Pro on top of the VR set, Camera, Move, and umpteen games I've just bought, purely for an extra bit of graphical sheen. That'd be close to a grand on new stuff, and I'm still not done buying all the games I want (Batman, Rush of Blood, and Battlezone all need to be bought), and I quite fancy a wheel + Driveclub.

Since october I have bought  a PSVR, a set of move controllers, a PS Pro, 4K HDR tv , A Thrustmaster T150 wheel and christ knows how many games

 

And I dont regret a single penny.

Yeah a shed load.

 

But I've been pretty good this year with saving so I thougth fuggit. I'll treat myself. It's not something I plan on doing every year , so now and again is good for you. We all spend most of our lifes working, so you have to get some good out of it outside of paying the bills or pissing it up the wall..

As an object takes up more and more of the screen (as you get closer to it in the game), you can resolve more and more detail. At some point, you're resolving all the available detail, and you just see the same details scaled larger and larger (i.e. blockier and blockier). A VR headset is relatively low resolution, so you don't hit that cross-over point until quite late. A TV is relatively high resolution, so you hit that cross-over point pretty early.

I watched some footage earlier and came to the conclusion that it was just a bog standard platformer with a vr viewpoint. I think I'm starting to see the difference between a VR game and a game in VR.

I've got the exact same one too - it's great  for the dosh, works great with my Thrustmaster T150. Driveclub is great with it (much better than the demo) and Dirt is stunning :)

Yeah, i think it got held up in Sony's approval process for far longer than they imagined. Which is a shame, because you may well be right about funding levels.

Psychonauts exceeded my expectations. Its brevity wasn't exaggerated in reviews but it's the same price as a Blu-ray movie and in that time it's a perfect VR experience with some of the best visuals yet (on a Pro at least) and a pleasing pay-off. If you were happy to pay £16 for Batman, you'll be happy with this.
