It's here, and I've been messing around with it for a couple of hours.

It's pretty amazing. First thing I played was some Virtual Toy room thing, and that had me laughing out loud when I looked behind me, and above me.

Then I did the free cage dive thing, with the Stingrays and so on, and that was cool.

Then I played Rez, which was amazing.

Then I played the CoD spaceship thing, and it was shit, but I still liked looking around the cockpit etc.

Then I played RE7...

...and I had to stop after 10 minutes because I genuinely thought I was going to puke. Cold sweat, the lot. :(

I can't seem to handle the right stick movement, either with the incremental steps or smooth motion.

I also wasn't prepared for how lo res and grainy everything looks. Quite disappointed in that regard.

Any recommended settings?

Have you calibrated eye distance ? Go into settings>devices>vr> calibrate eye distance . Have a tape measure ready cos the 70cm distance it asks for is quite important.

also there is a sweet spot in the very centre of the display where it will be clearer .

Unfortunately resident evil 7 is a difficult game to jump into on your first day. Stick movement definitely takes time to adjust to, took me about a week before it stopped bothering me.

It might be a good idea to postpone playing it seriously for a few days until you get your VR legs.

Dont forget to set your eye separation distance in the setup menu.

Ok, done that now. Didn't seem to make much of a difference.

I'm sure I'll get used to it. Just did the cage dive with the Great White and cacked myself. My missus is going to go bananas seeing that.

Take your time getting into VR. Take a break and don't play anymore today. It's easy to get carried away but the best advice is short and often sessions to get physically used to VR.

Yes, I think that's good advice. It's pretty full on, even more so than I expected.

One more question - when the screen is dark, on loading screens for example, there is a sort of covering of virtual dust or static all over the display. Is that normal?

Oh. That's a bit weird. Like a sort of film grain/noise effect.

That is what I kept noticing particularly on Driveclub VR (which I thought was pretty poor really graphically even on a Pro). Resi 7 on the other hand was awesome and I only noticed the grain during black screens.

StarBlood Arena reminds of the PS1 era in all the best ways.

Agh, I was really excited when that started and I saw it was another entry in the mini-renaissance of 6DoF shooters, only better because it's for PSVR, but then cruelly disappointed when it became clear that, like Descent Underground, this is another such game that's clearly focussed on multiplayer.

Still looks lovely, but not really for me. Well, maybe when it's very cheap, just for the mini single player component they mention at the end of the video.

It's weird - I think RE7 is the ropiest looking game Ive played so far. It looks like an old VHS or something. And yet when I opened a door into a completely dark room I felt genuine trepidation about entering.

Before I turned it off I maxed out the movement speed to 10, and that seemed to help a bit. I'm sure it's just acclimatisation.

Anyone know what hoops, if any, you got to jump through to watch that Sunny in Philadelphia VR thing on PSVR?

You just need to download jaunt VR which might be US psn only. Also a cool vr rogue one making of documentary on jaunt.

Really can't wait to dive into this again.

I was trying to manage a friend's expectations of the graphics, because ultimately they are very low resolution. It's really hard to explain how little that matters though, because of how much more immersed you feel. Anyway, I was looking at some Youtube vids of RE7 and if I set the video to 240P that looks about the same as what you actually see in the headset. Would you guys say that was a fair comparison?

To a degree. But unlike a 240P video, the closer you get to an object in a game, the sharper and higher resolution it becomes.

No, not for me.

Its a 1080p image. Its just that you are looking at it from about 20mm away. I don't really think the resoution or screen door effect (which is far better managed that other headset apparently) its anything to be concerend about really. THe immersion of VR just makes any concerns about resolution redundant for me. I think Driveclub VR is probably the best racing game money money can buy, because of the VR immersion. But some people hate it due to the detail and resolution drop. I guess some people are more sensitive to it than others.

Not one person that has tried my VR has complained about any res drop. they have been far too busy being overwhelemd by the immersion.

Yes, I agree - but my friend is pretty much a self-confessed GFX whore, so I'm trying to undersell it to him, to manage his expectations.

A 240p video looks about the same to me, in terms of pure "blockiness" as we'd have called it in the 80's. Like, if I could somehow take a still image of a TV frame's worth of what I actually see through the headset, that's the closest comparison I've found. But it doesn't tell the whole story, at all.

RE7 suffers from a lot of aliasing, so when the image is blown up to fit the several hundred inch screen the VR helmet represents, those stair step edges are exaggerated.

Those running on a pro get supersampling, so although the image you see isn’t of a higher resolution, it looks cleaner and sharper.

There are plenty of VR games with nice image quality though, try the bound demo or Thumper.
