 I groan every time I see yet another horror game. Those games are even less fun in VR. They are more effective for sure but not fun (for me)

Maybe doing something that isn't horror is more difficult because you don't have those easy mechanics or darkness and dynamic sound?

All the game I want to play are horror games but the last thing I want to play is a horror themed game.

Rush of Blood is the best light-gun game available on the system. Once you get past the horror, which let's face it is not really scary, unless a bit of gore is really going to do it for you. It's about bad guys lining up to be shot by you, you can't be scared when you've got hand guns that blow the nasties away! (yes I know you can, it's a joke...) And there's plenty of score attack to be done and some good high score tables too (including location based and friends).

 

Less fun in VR? WTF are you smoking, VR horror is amazing! I never play these games normally, because I find them daft and not particularly scary. (I do get the jump scare mechanic, Alien Isolation managed to freak me out, but mostly because it made you feel completely helpless). But in VR they rise to another level. RE7 will be the first RE game I've bought since RE4 on the Wii (because you lot kept going on about it) entirely because it is in VR.

 

And how many horror games are there actually? Talking PSVR here, I counted 6 on the PS Store, and that's too many? Naaah. What we are lacking is some longer, bigger experiences.

How many lightgun style shooters are there on psvr? 3? How many of those are horror of the not particularly tongue in cheek variety? 2. The other one involves shooting cardboard targets at a shooting range.

2 out of 3 seems a lot to me (especially when the other 1 has such an unexciting setting).

 

I have rush of blood and I enjoy it in small doses, but it is entirely too reliant on jump scares.

My idea of a "fun" horror themed lightgun game is House of the Dead 4 on ps3 etc.

Rush of Blood is clearly making more of an attempt to be scary than HOTD and for me that makes it less fun.

 

Perhaps scary is the wrong word.

I just dislike these jumpscare games, where you walk around constantly waiting for generic creepy girl imagery to pop up in your face accompanied by a sudden high pitched noise.

 

It reminds me of those .gifs that did the rounds online in the early 2000s where you'd look at a nice picture and then after a while a shrieking ghostface would pop up.

Is that scary? No, it is startling and unpleasant, neither of which are things I Iook for in a piece of entertainment.

 

I think they are the low hanging fruit of VR as they are probably relatively easy to design, they get a reaction from people and are good fodder for overreacting youtubers.

 

Many people dont really enjoy horror and even fewer will enjoy vr horror.

 

I feel like a shooter akin to House of The Dead/Ghost Squad/Confidential Mission etc would have a much broader appeal than shit your pants claustrophobic jumpscare vr.

 

I got a rollercoaster for gearvr yesterday that has a horror themed ride, but it is more disneyland haunted house style horror, it was pleasant and made me think of the potential vr has for fantasy experiences with a nice atmosphere. it made me wonder why so many devs seem to think that claustrophobic horror is what most people want from vr.

No, I would say it is more that I think in these early days when there are few games available, sony and devs would do better to create games that are fun  and have settings people might actually like to visit than games that are claustrophobic and full of jumpscares.

 

Horror gaming is niche and this type of horror even moreso I think.

 

I play rush of blood because there is no decent alternative on psvr. If a HOTD or Ghost Squad style shooter existed on psvr, I wouldn't bother with the jumpscares and atmosphere of rush of blood if i just wanted to enjoy some lightgun action.

I hear ya. I still think there is a surprising amount of fun content too. What are your favourite games so far on psvr? I'm assuming you've played wayward skies etc?

(I'm not a fan of first person stick movement because it makes me feel ill; third person movement is ok).

 

it sounds to me like you need one of the hordes of PC wave shooters to be ported to PS4.

I had no issues with the controls at all although I've not played Eagle flight yet there's a distinct difference between being a rider as you are in How we Soar and being an eagle in Eagle Flight.

True but I just personally found it controls like garbage which massively hampered my enjoyment of the game. It gives you a sense of freedom of being in a huge open world, but it's a pain traversing it. I found it took an age to respond to your controls and it makes chasing after the other birds a real chore. Now I guess it could be suggested that 'that's what the developer's wanted you to feel' but it didn't work for me. It actually reminded my of little big planet. Amazing ideas and beautiful graphics, but married to the same floaty controls that most Amiga platformers suffered from.

Clearly it was a development decision to make it feel like you were controlling a massive bird, but also because the levels unfold in front of you. If you were travelling too fast then  you'd be zooming over those bits and lose the impact. It's a sedate experience, but I never found it frustrating or a chore. Totally understand if you want something with a bit more gameplay and pace, but I thought it was a relaxing, imaginative, and sometimes magical experience. Two of the levels are utterly fantastic.. One of the best things on PSVR for sure.

Its a cracking game. It's one of those ones that when you watch it on YouTube it's basically nothing. Then when you play it in VR it's amazing. I've been importing songs to play today and that works a treat.

Design decisions are all well and good if they are fun to play. It's a pretty indie game and that seems to be the main reason why it's been getting such bizarrely high scores. I don't feel it even showcases VR that well, personally. I actually think the gameplay variation is better than eagle flight, it's the implementation that makes it a chore.

Well I found to fun to play. It feels like you are riding on a bird and you get to look around at all the ace scenes unfolding around you. It suits VR very well. It had a much bigger impact on me than the space piloting experiences, which it is probably closer to than Eagle Flight. More than the Star Wars one which people have generally been raving about.

I've seen way too much of the Shark Experience in VR worlds. So many guests over the holidays and the Shark dive is a great first VR experience it sells the hardware well, chalk me up another two headset's sold!

 

I usually do Shark dive then the Manor section of Batman. After that everyone is sold on VR. If not I chuck them in an XWing if your not sold after that you have no soul! The downside of running demos all holiday is I've hardly played anything myself :(. 

 

I'm still getting dropouts on the HDMI to the TV though which is annoying I thought I'd solved it after discovering the PS3 was on as well (both the PS4 and PS3 route through my amp). But it still seems to crop up intermittently :(

I've been continuing my Xmas VR demo run. Was a huge hit after getting back after a NY night out. The sound of magical joy as 50 year olds enjoyed virtual cigar smoking and shark attacks. So popular that even headmaster was played with a hangover :)
