I was watching Jim Sterling's "I hate VR" video and I find it really odd how most people in games media seem totally underwhelmed with VR.

Online I haven't seen much backlash against PS VR at all. Everyone who's tried it seems to like it. I don't think there's anyone in this thread who doesn't like it.

On the recent best of Giant Bomb you've got them trying Kitchen, looking utterly underwhelmed - but they're playing it in a studio, talking to their mates without headphones on.

The contrast between the views of many games journos and ourselves has never been so stark as with the case of PSVR, IMO.

Even though I got mine a few days ago, I had a pretty massive headache and was super tired on the day so took an executive decision to wait until I was feeling fresh. Had a night out the day after so that was also off the cards as didn't want to play drunk.

However, today, after the arduous setup and working out how to get it on for the first time around my glasses and getting everything focused...

It's GREAT!

I say this coming from an original Oculus DK1, so the initial mind blowing nature of it was perhaps dampened, but the combination of higher res screen, essentially not really noticeable screen door when focusing on objects, and the ability to lean in and look closer or move around is just a revelation. I'm having a break now because I don't want to overdo it, but here are thoughts on the experiences I've had so far of the demos:

Alumette: the first thing I tried - I felt like the little people were actually there in front of me and looking closer at them it was like interacting with a dolls house. I wanted to reach out and touch everything. Compared to say, the AR on the 3DS, this was just something else entirely.

Battlezone: I was wary of going straight to an action game but thought, fuck it. I was not prepared for how awesome it felt to be in the cockpit. Perhaps a bit intense for a first play, but when I was aiming my turret up and down and noticed the fucking MASSIVE gun moving on the right I let out a little delighted chortle.

Ocean Descent: I think the resolution of the screen is not really good enough for something like this to be as wondrous as it could be, but the sense of scale is unbelievable.

Superhypercube:  Great concept, awesomely psychedelic visuals. But I think this fried my brain and that's why I'm now having a break.

So, to sum up: most gaming journos are joyless idiots.

I'm finding it reasonably normal, to be honest: games reviewers (the same as critics in any medium) will generally have built up a pretty solid idea of what to expect from games in the genres they cover, and will analyse the games according to how they live up to those expectations. When anything comes around with new criteria to consider, those new elements are likely to be under-appreciated in favour of the qualities they are familiar with and best able to judge.

So the games out for PSVR will be criticised on how they perform relative to the genres they fall into, as the vocabulary to criticise them as VR experiences isn't really there. Similarly, the hardware is delivering something that is quite distinct from standard gaming hardware, and the opportunities it offers in terms of gameplay features are not yet obvious, while the limitations are easy to observe and there already exists ample vocabulary to describe them - so there's plenty of focus on VR limiting the types and speeds of motion, the relative drops in visual quality compared to non-VR games operating on the same level of processing power, the relative brevity of most of the experiences so far, and of course the simple fact that for some people VR really is unplayable.

Finished Batman last night, sublime. Will definitely go through it again.

And Rush of Blood is great, love it. Time to get back onto Rez, need to open up Area X. While I do feel the Rift is the better hardware I must say the PSVR has given me some of my greatest VR moments so far. What makes Batman so good is not just the quality of the production but how well the interface works, there should be a lot of lessons learned from how it implements things. Just using your gadgets and putting them back on your belt feels so intuitive!

Hey! I gave rez 10/10. I can understand being jaded about games (i've been writing about them for 15 years now) but I cant understand all this apathy towards vr it's mind-blowingly amazing. I mean you're in the actual games. It's everything I've ever wanted since being a little kid whi had to stand in a bar stool to play Pac-man.

For some reason I can't get Kitchen to track properly at all now :( Wanted to show it to a mate tomorrow evening but it's all over the place. Yet everything else seems to be working fine.

Oh and just in case - there is quite the thread now on reddit from some guy who used alcohol to clean the lenses. Seems they are coated and he has fucked them up. So beware of yours get dirty or greasy.

Hoping someone can help me with my setup, not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there is any advice (or if this is just 'the way it is').

Essentially I have the camera on top of the TV and I stand about 2 metres away. In fast moving games such as Rez and Rush of Blood everything is fine. But anything static (particularly Batman and Job Simulator) the view is ever so slightly moving at all times even if I'm completely still, just swaying a little. It wasn't too bad most of the time in Batman and was certainly good enough for me to finish it but Job Simulator was too much movement to be comfortable so I had to quit out. Don't have anything reflective behind me, tried different lighting conditions (apart from daylight as with a 10 month old I can only get the headset out when she is in bed) but doesn't seem to help. As I have limited time I haven't seen if this is with every title, and as mentioned any in continuous movement then it'd fine or I don't notice. I have a Rift so I'm used to the view through the headset being rock steady, and I know the PSVR is supposed to have tracking that isn't quite as good so I'm trying to work out is this just the way it is, or is it down to my environment or setup?

If anyone had got any pointers then point away please!:)

I had this after days of no issues. I know this will sound ridiculously simple but do a complete restart of your PS4. I had mine on rest mode as normal but some people are finding that after a certain amount of time this movement starts to effect certain games. No idea if it's correct but I read something about the restart clearing a cache. I tried everything with lights, placement and calibration before trying the restart and it worked a treat.

Wow Batman is really immersive, it's got presence nailed. Only had a short go before the F1 highlights but it was an amazing first twenty minutes... Mesmerising, however two moves are essential to really feel like Batman.

I to seem to be getting some bumpy tracking on the headset which made it feel like Batman had a bit of a twitch... Will try a full power down before my next session.

@Slartibartfast I found having my camera look at me from an angle is just generally a whole lot better than having it stare at me straight on. I put it at about a 30 degree angle to me.

I might try that though I've had a good day with it after I closed the curtains.

i really really like the shooting range in Heists. I might buy VR worlds but I also need some move controllers :/

Just finished Here They Lie. Pretty cool little game. I can see why a lot of reviews thought it tried too hard but it definitely had a great little Jacobs Ladder vibe going on. Very creepy in VR too although it did give me a decent amount of nausea at times. I think it's the only game that really had. No idea what the hell was going with the story and the ending but a decent experience nonetheless!

Let us know how you get on. The other handy thing with having it at a bit of an angle is that it's slightly harder to obscure the headset by flailing your arms around.

Yeah, the manual explicitly says to only use a dry cloth (e.g. the one that comes with the headset) to clean the lenses, and it sounds like they weren't kidding around.

Yep, good info to use. For the Rift I have ended up using a can of air to blow any dust away and then lens wipes (which goes against the official line but lots of other people had used the same ones and it has worked wonderfully). Sounds like these lenses are more sensitive though...will dry wipe only!

aha...interesting. Will give that a go as I've already restarted PS4 etc. And now I think of it I probably had it angled on the first day in order to do a quick test and it worked better than now when I have it bang in the centre at the top of the TV with me standing straight on.

Thinking about it though, why move the camera? Just sit at an angle lol

thanks for pointing this out, i used some glasses wipe thing on mine (not sure what the ingredients are) and fingers crossed they seem ok, but i'll do some more research before using something like that again.

I just wonder what I'll use to clean the lenses if they ever get greasy at all. I use glasses for reading and once you get a finger print on them, or brush them against your hair if you have gel in it etc, then a plain old lens cloth doesn't cut it.
