Just played Batman for a while and OH MY GOD!!!

I know people have been gushing about how good it is, but when you play it, WOW!

Will spoiler but it's fairly early on :

Spoiler

Looking at the 3D models of the characters and changing their stance to the one where their eyes follow you. Man, I was getting right up close, very impressive.

One drawback of VR is that it's made me much more of a wuss than I normally would be.  Some of the end of Arkham really put me on edge in a way that playing it via TV wouldnt.  In particular

when you're in the cell, and the room starts changing, there's a bit where the walls close in, and it actually made me feel a little claustrophobic.  Which is a testament to the immersion factor.  But even something as simple as turning around and there being a change, it's much worse in VR due to the sense of stuff actually being there in the same space as you

Even something relatively tame like that diving demo - there's a part of it which goes very dark and I suddenly went a bit nervous, and the deeper it went the more that feeling grew.  I'd already seen The Kitchen so I knew what to expect, but even then it was pretty freakin' unnerving.  I actually turned Until Dawn off like a big wuss, partly because the normal controller isnt that great to use with it - you dual wield guns, but using a normal controller means you always point them both in the same direction, but it feels off because you are essentially "holding" each gun in game, but in real life it's one object, so you kind of expect to hit from the centre of the controller, not from the sides - but also because it shit me up a little more than I expected.

Genuinely not sure how well I'd handle a full horror game on the thing.  I remember when PT was released, and there were rumours it could be used as a showcase for VR, which seemed cool at the time even though it shit me up enough without VR.  With VR though I think that thing Kojima said about wanting to make players shit their pants would actually come true.  I've seen VR demos for the PC options that were horror based, and while it'd be cool to go through knowing where the scares are, given the experience I've had on PSVR I think going into one cold would be freakin' terrifying.  But on the other hand, there's so much they could do with the medium and I'd love to see more - some of the stuff I saw in Until Dawn worked really well.

Going to take it over a mates in a weeks with a few people who are into horror-y stuff.  They dont really know too much about any of the stuff out for VR yet, so I'm going to sit them down in a chair and put The Kitchen on without telling them anything about it.  Might even video it to capture their reaction.

Here they lie and Rush of blood have gotten me a few times with jump scares. It's pretty different when things are leaping right into your face.

Also painting sky cocks with music in Harmonix Music will never get old

According to a guy on Reddit who works for Sony, there's some kind of resolution bug which means that anyone who has their screen resolution to 'Auto' (in the main system settings) may be compromising their experience. Setting it to 1080p alleviates the issue. For some people, this does nothing. For others, it increases what the social screen puts out, and even in some cases people are claiming the headset resolution is better! Bit of an odd one, but thought I'd throw it out there.

I tried it, and it certainly seems to make my social screen sharper. Dunno if that's just cos I wasn't looking at it properly before, though.

Care to share your top tips for minimising tracking probs?

I guess a lot of you do this already so my apologies if this isn't new to you.

It's all about eliminating additional lighting in the field of view of the camera. More crucially looking at areas where the lights may get reflected by a mirror or glass window behind you. Sun bright sun light us a killer to especially if it's directly behind you. However that will also effect a Vives IR tracking. Ideally the system likes the dark, no reflections, no room lighting no side lights. Watch those phone screens to if someone put a blue image on their phone and waved it behind you it could throw out the tracking.

The thing a lot of people forget is that VR doesn't have to be the focus of the room like a TV can be. So if your TV setup is facing a problem area move your camera to point to another area of the room which is less of an issue. This will help with PlayroomVR as well as the VR player needs to not be blocking the TV players screen.

Interesting.

Some games are so much better than others. if they were all as good as the best (Wayward sky, Bound, Headmaster) that would go along way.

I tired Wayward Sky demo again and I really like the gameplay but it seems the tracking is swaying just like it did before. These tracking issues MUST be game specific. The game really wants a move controller /but I don't have one yet so maybe thats an issue.

While gushing about Batman and how it's one of the highlights of my gaming experiences, I was thinking about how far games had come in my lifetime, then realised something - one of the very first games I owned was a Batman game.  This one;

I loved this game at the time.  Graphically, its a bit of a joke now, with only 2 colours, but at the time it looked great compared to a lot of games.  Ironically, it's also shorter, as you can complete it in less than 30 minutes (though arguably, it should last longer seeing as it's reasonably difficult and you probably wont complete it first go, unlike Arkham, which I dont think you can even "fail" in?) despite being a full price release, though this was hardly uncommon for games at the time.  If you'd have shown 10 year old me, who at the time thought of this as one of their favourite games, Arkham VR, I think my head would have literally exploded.

To play Batman standing I had to push my sofa back and adjust the camera on top of the TV upwards a bit.

You can play sitting but I recommend standing so you can step forward or sideways to get a closer look or different viewpoint.

Oh yeah, with regards to saving progress.

I saw on exiting to main menu, different Acts & scenes are selectable. Can I go back and select earlier parts of the game to demo to friends without effecting my progress?

Wasn't too interested in Batman, but the praise it's had here made me decide to give it a go.  Wow! Have just had my mind blown again this week. It's absolutely stunning isn't it?

Spoiler

I'm in the house on my own this afternoon and the bit where the villain comes right up into young (and small) Bruce's face genuinely unnerved me. I came close to turning it off! Or the bit where you go down into the Bat Cave. There's a section where it really does feel like you're on a lift. Amazing stuff.

Not everyone is impressed with VR, I was so eager to have my brother come and try it out; he cancelled his pre-order and we've both gamed together for years but he wasn't impressed <_< Pretty gutted tbh, I thought for sure he'd have the same reaction as me; got it all set up and in focus and tried Playroom, Battlezone, PSVR World diving demo, Robot Rescue and Rush of Blood; kept looking for him to smile but nope the miserable b*****d! had no reaction  "Yeah it's alright, just like looking through a port-hole; it's not like you're really there" which is true enough but c'mon it's more than that. I guess if you're really set against getting into it you won't enjoy it. Keep your PSVR away from maungy buggers!

Ah well I love it and think that is the most awesome thing, I still can't get over the sense of scale and presence you can feel; I can't get through that diving demo, looking up at the boat as the light fades is too real for me, panic every time. I found some Move controllers on Gamestop UK this morning; as soon as I bought them the listing went to out of stock so hopefully that means I've got them and then I can fully enjoy Rush of Blood & finally give Batman a go when they arrive, is it worth holding out on Rez too? Or do they not really add anything to that?

Similar experience with my missus's two nephews yesterday who came around to visit (12 and 14). I showed them the Shark Attack thing, a couple of Luge races each and then one of them had a go on the Kitchen demo. I got barely any reaction at all, just "Yeah it was alright."

Don't know what's made them such jaded little fuckers. Perhaps when the first console you remember is the PS3 it takes more to impress you?

I wonder what VR game they are going to offer in PS plus in Nov. They are rumoured to be some triple A titles as well as VR... Which to me reads as Rez, it's triple A imo and compatible with non VR PS4 and VR...

Not a chance.

Well in terms of reactions all of mine have been overwhelmly positive. My son is obsessed and it's been tough having to really limit how much we let him use it.

Really tempted with the full game of tumblr now after trying the demo. Slightly worried it gets insanely hard though and ruins the fun.

@Flub tried mire of the HTL demo- really does look good and I'm getting better with the controls. I can't figure out why the didn't just provide traditional FPS controls with your head controlling the torch/ view. I don't suppose the full game provides that option?

Finally tried the full Eve game. Wow! It might be light on content (having said that it looks like there was plenty to me) but the atmosphere is incredible. Firing out in your ship in the middle of a massive battle is everything I imagined it would be.

I don't have Move controllers, but considering the responsiveness of the head tracking (and the fact you'll find yourself turned 180 degrees a few times if using the VR, negating their use in those moments) I can't see the Move controllers being essential - I imagine they're nice to have if you want an easy time without VR, but don't see them adding anything to the VR experience.
