PlayStation VR

I think the only real issue I have with the PSVR is the volume won't go high enough on the headphones. If I'm playing something I want to get really immersed. The volume doesn't go high enough for that.

If anyone is interested I played a bit of the Assembly earlier. Really piss poor graphics but I quite enjoyed it.

Here's my stream

It has a wide selection of control schemes. Eventually I settled on the staggered style turning but I reckon I could get used to regular controls. When I play more I'll try it.

I'd pay full wack for a full game of different experiences set in the London Heist universe.  Full on vulgar, Guy Ritchie style, super stylish cockney violence.

It was one of my favourite sessions with the VR so far.  Apparently a cold call sales person decided to to gorp through the lounge window when I was immersed in a shoot out... Hope he enjoyed the view, the farrrkin carrrnt.

Unfortunately I have to report another amazing game. RIGS is incredible, so much better than the demo made it look. The production values are off the scale. They should have put the whole tutorial in the demo, followed by an offline match, as it's nowhere near as confusing as the demo disc made it look. But anyway, wow. WOW. Get on this, people.

Jesus, VR is great. It's so great.

That's my only problem with it too. I want to crank Rez up to deafening levels. :)

Just another note to say that if you have the Moves*, you MUST play Batman. It is a startlingly good experience. You think you know VR, then you play that. I'm not even a batfan. It is utterly amazing. I just can't put it into... just FUCKING BUY AND PLAY IT!!

* If you don't have them, buy the Moves as soon as you can and play this fucking game!!

Does Until Dawn have any replay value or is it pretty much just a play once thing?

I'd say so. 7 levels, 4 difficulty settings. Multiple routes high score chasing.

i think it's fucking brilliant, personally. It's the best house of the dead Sega never made.

I love reading all these impressions, even if they're variations of "I've been in the industry for 80 years and this smoked my boots", keep them coming.

What's it like compared with other big gaming moments, seeing Mario 64 for the first time etc?

THIS.  I was getting flashbacks to playing House of the Dead at Centre Parcs in the 90s and being in awe at how much they'd captured everything that my Nu Metal addled brain wanted in an arcade game.  It's scary, it's funny and watching people play is worth the outlay of the hardware and game.

The Wayward Sky demo is a work of art. Nintendo must be looking at stuff like this and thinking that they could do something incredible.

Personally it's my favourite experience in PSVR, the changes in perspective giving lots of "this is totally fucking amazing!" moments, great interactions with objects and the art style that makes the world and characters look like toys come to life, really impressive.

Its a landmark for sure. It's something you can;t explain because you can never put across the feeling you get when you see such scale and depth mixed with such immediate interactivity.

its like seeing polygons for the first time. Or pixel shaders from a GeForce 3 (well I thought that was ground breaking) plus 3D but all rolled into one.

it's like it's 1991 and you have a sega megadrive ,C64 or 286 PC playing monkey island or something and someone's just come along and showed Mass Effect 2.

Resisting the urge to say mean things about Mario 64, the closest thing I can think of is when I first played Shenmue, the feeling of being in an actual world. With Shenmue that was thanks to being able to have Ryo interact with or pick up (seemingly) every object, every person in a dense world. With VR, it's the sense of presence, literal immersion in a world.

I really, really hope that a great story-led adventure game comes out sooner rather than later for this.

Right, had a good sesh this evening once my Battlezone sickness finished.

Rez - Did Area 1 and 2. Not as mind blowing as I had expected but I'm waiting for Area 5 and X to blow me away.

VR Luge - rubbish.

That headball game in VR Worlds - pretty fun, actually. Needs to be fleshed out into a proper game. 2 player online would be brilliant.

Scavenger's Odyssey - They really don't care about making you ill at all, do they? Still, it's something pretty special. Another one that needs to be fleshed out. Does anyone else think it's a lot blurrier than everything else, though? I suspect it might be operating at a lower resolution than a lot of the other games. If so, PS4 Pro might make a big difference.

Tumble VR - seems ok. I did the first zone and found it quite boring. I want my £7.99 back.

Then finished off on some Driveclub to end on a nauseous note. I was sitting on a beanbag so I rested my arms on my knees. Makes it far less tiring when using motion controls. Really needs a wheel though. I'd imagine it's quite frustrating for the devs to have people rubbishing it because they're probably not playing it with a wheel. Another one which would probably benefit massively from PS4 Pro, I think.

Thoughts so far:

Having had a Gear VR for several months, the WOW factor of trying the PSVR for the first time wasn't as pronounced as some of the first reactions to VR here and having tried Driveclub first, I was actually concerned about the resolution of the Sony headset. However, it is apparent that Driveclub appears to be one of a few launch games running at quite a low resolution to maintain its smooth frame-rate. Bright sunny tracks look fine, but the overcast tracks just turn everything into a grey muddy blur.

I have had my Move controllers since the PS3 days and am happy the batteries still work and they are compatible with PSVR. I've had to move the camera and my living room floor lights all over the place to try and prevent the jitter and tracking issues and having windows on two opposite walls of my living room probably means it's never going to be perfect and hope Sony can do something via software to sort it out. However, when it works, it's sensational! Until Dawn and London Heist both use dual Moves for aiming and shooting and it can be absolutely flawless and the tangible sense of holding and shooting a weapon is fantastic.

I've got quite a wide selection of the launch titles and here's a brief review of what I've played so far:

Driveclub:

Played several races, controls and plays well even with dualshock motion control (don't have a PS4 wheel unfortunately) and looking around whilst racing is great but the low resolution and blurry graphics hamper enjoyment unfortunately. (2.5/5)

Batman VR:

Completed it once, absolutely amazing. Clever use of move controllers, sense of presence unparalleled, amazing graphics. Buy it now! (4.5/5)

Rez:

Haven't put much time into this unfortunately. Up to Area 3 so far. Looks and plays great. It's Rez in VR! (4/5)

Thumper:

Haven't played this enough to score, but it looks absolutely fantastic in VR.

Until Dawn:

Great fun, good graphics. Flick the move controllers to reload! Shooting gallery on a ghost train! (4/5)

Kitchen:

Very short but gives you a horrible feeling of being helpless stuck in a chair with a psycho on the loose. Very low res/no anti-aliasing though which has me concerned about Resi 7's VR mode. (2.5/5)

PlayStation VR Worlds:

Some good stuff on here:

London Heist - 2 actual gameplay chapters with several sit and listen chapters (Tip: you can actually smoke a cigar and blow smoke - try it!) Gameplay chapters great fun indeed. Shooting gallery included is fantastic with move controls (4/5)

Luge - OK I guess. Blurry graphics and motion sickness could be a problem here. (2/5)

DangerBall - Amazing presention, sharp visuals, great gameplay (4.5/5)

Ocean Descent - Very nice indeed. The shark when it appears and gets close, is beautifully modeled and animated. (3.5/5)

Scavengers odyssey - Also nice presentation, the jumping section between floating space rocks made me feel a bit queasy though. (3/5)

Sports Bar VR:

Some tracking issues with move, but when it works it's great fun. Pool, darts, air hockey and that game where you roll a ball up a slope into holes to score points. Added bonus of being able to chuck chairs and beer bottles about! (3.5/5)

Playroom VR:

Only played the platformer section so far. UNBELIEVABLY GOOD (6/5)

Playstation Demos - so far:

Job Simulator - Good fun, not paying £24 though. (3/5)

Tumble - Great fun. Will buy soon probably for £7. (4/5)

Eve Valkyrie - Not bad, not paying £50/55. (3/5)

RIGS - Have the full game sealed and unplayed. Demo was confusing though so will play the disc soon and hopefully it will all make sense. (3/5)

Battlezone - Good stuff. Felt a bit queasy when demo ended though. (3.5/5)

Allumette:

Animated VR short. Beautiful stuff, possible future direction of animated movies hopefully. (4/5)

Bought but not played yet:

Bound

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

Super Stardust VR

Overall - very impressed indeed. Well done Sony.
