PlayStation VR

PS blog says the focal length is between 6 and 10 feet. I need glasses for reading, but don't need to use them with this. In fact it is quite strange to move very close to something and see it appear nice and crisp. Something I haven't been able to do without glasses for a few years now.

Amongst the many mind blowing things I played yesterday, the one that's sticking in my head the most this morning is Allumette.

 

its a free short film. To tell you anything about it would spoil it, but its astonishing. You can lean right in and see things close up, or even obscured things by tilting a looking around walls. The depth is unbelievable. Best use of 3D sound too - listen out for the singer, look down for her, then look away and the sound reduces as you're further away - subtle but brilliant.

 

Has anybody else tried it?

Also had a bit a funny turn playing the new tank game in Super Stardust. The game looks and plays lovely, but when you drive over bumps, or especially double-bumps on the ground, I get butterflies in my stomach every time. Nice game though, well worth the upgrade price. The normal old mode looks great in VR too...

Torn on whether to go with this or vive/rift.

I have a pc that can handle vr, but sony seem to be getting some decent (timed?) exclusives.

Psvr is cheaper but it sounds like it will lead to me having to buy a ps4 pro (not really planning on getting one otherwise).

 

I have a GearVr which is crap (mainly due to overheating after 15 minutes of anything taxing) apart from as a means of watching movies but I want to believe non mobile vr is in a different league.

Has anyone tried gear vr and psvr?

How big is the jump?

Yes! Adored it. Beautiful sample of what VR story telling could do. You can easily imagine watching it multiple times to see new things.

Yup , I was quite taken by it . As you say moving your head in and out and around let's you basically zoom in and marvel at all the little details . Dunno if I would buy it , but it certainly a charming thing

Other games were obviously running at full resolution. Or close enough to make no difference. Stuff like Rez, Thumper and the VR Worlds stuff I tried (Apart from Luge).

 

I'm not sure as I haven't seen the games in the flesh, but I'd suspect the games are all running at fully resolution, just some are using anti aliasing and others aren't.

It's on my list to try tonight - I quite like VR animations.

I've mentioned it in the game's own thread, but Rez Infinite is the best. If it didn't have Area X it would merely be spectacular, but the whole package is absurdly good. I wasn't able to do a full direct assault from start to end just yet - the feeling wasn't so much "motion sickness" as "VR sensory overload", and partway through my Area 3 attempts I took a break for a short while - but each area just makes you want to check the next one, and Area X is the best slice of Rez yet. :)

Are VR legs a genuine thing? Having played most of the demos yesterday I'm going game shopping later. RIGS is certainly slightly unnerving when you are out in the arena, jumping down off a 50 foot platform, making my stomach do somersaults. 

 

Thumper is one of the more surprising games. The videos don't do it justice. When you're in there with that ominous music thumping it's hypnotic.

After hearing some people's problems with Driveclub VR, I was slightly nervous about trying the demo. However, I didn't feel any motion sickness at all. Maybe it helped that I changed the steering to motion controls on the Dualshock 4? That may trick the brain slightly into believing more that you're in a car, I dunno. Anyway, it's a real shame that the graphics are so low res in Driveclub VR (noticeably worse than the other games I've played so far) as it plays really nicely. Hopefully this will be a game that the PS4 Pro makes look better (although I'm a bit worried that it won't be developed further now that Evolution are defunct).

 

I tried the demo of Rigs and had no idea what I was doing at all, but it seemed really fun. Definitely thinking about it as my full price game.

 

Thumper is fucking amazing, btw. Some ominous shit going on in that game. Can't wait to really get stuck into that and Rez over the weekend. And complete Batman VR. And try out the many demos I haven't played it. And watch Allumette. OMG, so much to do. Proper sensory overload.

I've heard some people using the term 'sensory sickness' instead of motion sickness, which makes a lot more sense to me!  It's isn't motion sickness.  Because there isn't motion.  It's not always apparent motion that causes it.  It's your brain struggling to cope with unknown/alien sensory inputs; that's what makes you feel weird/sick.

I think I did about 6hrs last night. With not one feeling of nausea. Guess I didnt need to find my Vr legs. But you know what those hrs were spent with my jaw dropped open. Experiencing one of the best nights of gaming I have ever had. Made this 41 yr old very happy

I played for about 45 mins, getting to grips with it all yesterday. I tried a couple of the games on the psvr worlds game. 

 

I honestly have not grinned that much since I first saw the opening intro to FF 9 (my first FF).

 

Jeez it was incredibly and I came incredibly close to calling in sick so I could stay home and play all day.... I don't know how I resisted :(

 

Anyway I'm going to game this evening to pick up a game or 2 and after some suggestions based on peoples first bits of gameplay.

 

I will have approx £60 - 70 and undecided on whether I purchase Drive club or loading human and then one of the lesser expensive games. Or do I go and get one of the "flagship" games like Eve or Rigs and then hold off on getting anything else until the likes of golem and stark trek come out?

 

Seriously though I loved it and have spent all morning watch game trailers etc for upcoming games :D

I really don't see how people get nauseous in Driveclub VR. It'd be the same as getting sick while driving an actual car!

 

For me, the game works like an absolute treat. Especially with my wheel (T300 RS), set to 540 degrees steering angle. Looking into corners, judging distances and even getting a lot more visual feedback on how the car is behaving.

Added bonus: looking (in)to other cars as we're battling :D Some great races with @Sng and others were already had!

 

My only gripe is the hardcore mode - it makes the car handling and mostly grip levels a lot more realistic, but as a result some targets (times, average speeds) are just impossible to be achieved.

 

Meanwhile, I spent some more time in VR Worlds too, in which Scavenger’s Odyssey was the first title to make me border on sick. Jumping onto walls and having your view rotate as a result is just not okay! Managed to avoid anything funny by closing my eyes during jumps but stopped after reaching the halfway point of the game.

 

However, the shooting gallery in The London Heist just an absolute blast and highly recommended to try :D

Is kitchen using objects at the same distance from you as batman, or much further? That's the other thing that leads to jaggie hell - high frequency detail at a distance. The good oculus stuff tends to be more flat shaded, or deliberately closer to you.

Personally PSVR has got me hyped for VR again. Initially I was skeptical of the launch line-up but after trying out a bunch of things that I didn't expect to be all that amazing I've got to say that Sony have delivered an incredible launch, especially with so much of it available to demo. I've probably sampled more games on PSVR than I have on the Rift already. It will be interesting if Oculus follow Sony's lead and start offering more demos because they really do sell you the game. Things that don't look all that appealing are transformed when you are in the world. Obviously the Rift is more powerful and offers higher res, but the PSVR headset is more comfortable and I have slightly less blurring issues, less light bleed over the nose and I haven't noticed any 'god-rays' which are terrible on the Rift (shafts of light blurring off of bright objects/text). Definitely try out all 3 headsets, and check out the games available, but if I had to pick one right now I'd say PSVR.

 

Edit: I should note that I haven't tried a Vive, so this is more of a Rift/PSVR comparison.
