Just played a bit of Destiny crucible on the headset to see what non-VR games are like. The resolution takes a hit, but that fades once you've playing for a while. Feels twitchier than on a standard TV, but the massive screen size caused issues as I had to physically move my head to see the radar and ammo information.

Rez is the first game that hasn't made me feel queasy even in the slightest.

Having spent hundreds of hours in VR I think I have a pretty good handle on just looking at something in 2D and working out how comfortable it will be in VR (although doesn't matter much to me as these days I'm immune to anything apart from serious glitches).

I can therefore just tell by looking at Rez that it's a really nice fit for comfort due to the pacing, the effort that's been put in, the fact that a lot of the time there is wide open space around you. It's good to hear that seems to be the case for people so far.

Just been reading on reddit about a tip for blurriness. Some guy went through the setup via the PS4 menus that measures the distance between your eyes. It wants you to look at the camera while 70cm away. Seems that carefully measuring that 70cm helps a lot in getting rid of a blurry image.

Your views on where to start would be very welcome!

Mine's arrived...work call at 2pm an then I'm diving in for an hour or so.  Wife has prohibited me from showing the kids so needs to be hidden away again by 3.45!  Aged 7 and 10 so prob not a bad thing.  Being old sucks sometimes.

Ugh, I hate to be the first really negative person but I'm just not really feeling it. Between the blurry screen, the screen door effect and the fairly low quality graphics I just don't feel immersed. It's not really about being a graphics whore. If the graphics were PS2 quality but the screen was sharp and there was no screen door effect and there wasn't shimmering and aliasing all over the shop I'd be fine. But at the moment I just feel like I'm having my face shoved up against a bad quality screen. Anywhere there is text really shows it up, I find it hard to read especially when it's part of the HUD.

Honestly I'm really bummed out about it. I'm gonna take a break for a bit and come back to it in a bit with lowered expectations and see if I can look past it. At the minute I feel like it's on its way back to Amazon.

Sure some people are gonna say I'm dead inside or whatever but for a peripheral that is all about immersiveness I just don't feel immersed when the tech doesn't feel quite good enough for it yet.

alrighty then!

After a couple of hours playing:

-Definitely amazing, very immersive, especially Job Simulator

-Setting up was easy. Putting the headset on is pretty tricky (I kept getting hair trapped in my view)

-My glasses steamed up a bit at points

-No nausea up until a few games of Superhypercube. I don't know if it's the game or because I'm genuinely poorly at the moment.

I would fiddle with the settings, the screen door thing isnt something I have seen levelled at PSVR, or the shimmering.

I haven't really felt nauseous yet, although I've only been playing for short periods before going off to do other stuff; I'm not sure what will happen if I have an evening with it. Also, this is my first "modern" VR experience and my eyes and brain seem to have taken to PSVR pretty well - cable spaghetti and comfortable headband adjustment turned out to be greater concerns than motion sickness, although I have only played two games!

Okay - first 2-3 hours:

Struggled to get a decent sharp view on the headset. Got there in the end, but it's surprisingly difficult. Also, I've resorted to earbuds as headphones just didn't fit very well over it. It's possible but a bit too off-ear. Volume on the headphones feels too low also, so might have to try the in-ear.

I'm suffering from drift constantly to the left. By 10-15 minutes of play I'm starting to struggle as the centre shifts. Would love to know what is causing it so I can try and fix.

Games then!

SUPERHYPERCUBE - only played the demo but it's really involving and feels very well designed. The 3D sound design is amazing.

Thumper - Already love this. VR doesn't do much for the game and feels mostly like a 3D game but still helps the immersion.

DriveclubVR - Loved looking round the 3D environments and seeing Edinburgh but I'm not too keen on the actual racing. I had real trouble focusing on things - really having to be still to read the lap counter and real issues looking into the distance. Not sure...

Battlezone - excellent demo. Suprised at just how much movement you have but felt really solid and enjoyable

Hatsune Miku Future Live - This is surprisingly enjoyable in a goofy way. Wave your pad like a Wii remote in time to the music and feel like your at a Miku concert. Which I did!

Playroom VR - Slick package. Lots of amazingly clever little bits of design. I played the 1 player platformer and utterly loved it. I definitely want a VR platformer now from Japan Studio. Tearaway VR seems like an obvious bet.

All good stuff! Still impressive.

You're definitely going to see shimmering, because the pixel density is so low and most PS4 games can't afford good anti-aliasing.

This is a crucial point.  I'm amazed they use something so flakey to measure it and don't give you an software calibration which lets you use your own eyes to judge the blurriness.

It doesnt have an adjustable focus wheel? That's strange, I found that essential on the gear VR.

You don't need it on a device that has a fixed screen, I guess.  I don't know much about the Gear VR's workings, though.

The Rift and Vive don't have a focus dial, for instance.

I think (bearing in mind I've only played the demo) that Battlezone is the most impressive game so far. If it was just a little less than the 40-50 quid it seems to be going for, I'd snap it up. I might still yet.

Maybe it's something they can patch in later? It does sound like it lacks a bit of common sense.

I'm just gonna grab a tape measure to get it right.

Heh, it's very hard to measure accurately yourself!  On the Rift, they show you a bright green cross that, if the IPD is incorrect, will look a bit blurred at the left/right edges of the vertical line.  You can freely adjust until it's super clear.

Can you manually set the IPD on the PS4 then? i.e just type in 64mm or whatever?

Great reading everybody's impressions. I have the funds and one reserved for collection by tomorrow but I'm still so undecided.

Well I would say if there hasn't been anything to convince you to get one by now then you're best of waiting it out until there is something that makes it worth it for you otherwise you'll just end up despising it and wishing you'd waited for *that* game:) I have the money too but Sony have annoyed me in the past with their lack of support, especially with the Vita; this time they need to prove themselves before I open my wallet. That and I really can't be doing the with spaghetti junction of new cables to cable manage
