On the live coverage they had the audio from the video referee. He did mention he was checking it but only looked at the side view once or twice before giving him out.

Tv umpire was only looking to see if he broke the stumps with his gloves before the ball did. I’m thinking it was the right call on balance, but it was impossible to know for certain. Pretty sure the take was behind the stumps too.

This is the frame from the BBC highlights as the ball goes into the gloves. I reckon it's pretty conclusive that he took the ball in front of the stumps. Not that it really matters anyway. If India hadn't won, I think they'd have had reason to be upset about the decision.

oh fair enough, I didn't remember it that way at all (is that reverse-angle? I'm kind of impressed he managed to break the stumps the way he did from that position, he clearly thought he'd fucked it). How's about the dubious no-ball on height that was never going to be above waist height at the crease?

edit - does the take in front of the stumps matter? It's a run-out not a stumping. I don't fully understand this rule, I acknowledge.

I thought it did, but now I'm not sure.

Yeah, the no-ball is dubious. Anyway it was an entertaining end to the match.

I think it must be ok because there's that whole thing about keepers doing runouts by taking in front of the stumps as a relatively modern change to technique. But yes, the main thing is a highly entertaining game ended incredibly. Glad the rain held off until today even though it did ruin SA v Zim.
