Yup - the AI tends to make most races pretty hilarious.   Try Tribend Wild Circuit with some bots.  They can't seem to take the chicane for some reason leading to all sorts of fun. 

 

Dont miss out playing this online though - that is where the real laughs are.

Do I need to buy lots of cars and upgrades to compete online, or does the host control these things? (Sorry for the noob questions, I'm liking this game a lot! My 8 year old also gave it a spin at the weekend and really loved how fucked up his car could get.)

No you dont - you can get loan cars from each class that are more than good enough to get you going.  Obviously the more cars you buy / win in single player mode the better and these can be upgraded whereas loan cars can't.  I would recommend tournament mode as this has some of the best cars in the game are available with the Fame points earned from these and it has its own Store. (not credits from SP/MP)

My five year old saw me playing this and asked for a shot. Sure, what harm can come of playing a racing game?

 

10 mins later she’s laughing and screaming, crashing her lawnmower into other people, watching them fly through the air and then attempting to run over the bodies... :blink:

Thanks to Game Pass I've had a good go on this and it's such a laugh.  It's a shame the UI, music, menus etc are so archaic - I really think it lets the game down somewhat.  The way it's all laid out in the career mode for example feels a bit messy and haphazard.

 

The most important thing though is how it plays and I really do enjoy it.  Getting the right drift on a corner to either avoid a collision or to line up for a nice, t-bone smash into the side of an opponent is TREMENDOUS.

 

I do wish it had "Oh-oh - WHAT a smash!!" commentary from PS1 Destruction Derby though.......

The menu is confusing at first, I found it hard to work out what cars are needed for certain events. However it's so much fun it won me over. 

 

I'm attempting to do all events in the PS4 version with the hardest AI, assists off and realistic damage, going better than expected so far but I am somewhat reliant on the occasional AI pile-up or a naughty nudge - they're FAST. I am NOT looking forward to doing that damn sofa race again.

Yeah this took me AGES to work out! Just having a tiny flag indicating you need a vehicle from a specific country/continent to allow you to compete in a challenge is bonkers. Especially as you get no indication anywhere else that that is the issue.

 

There doesn't even seem to be a filter when viewing new cars that you can set to only show vehicles from certain regions.

 

Other than that though it's a fantastic game, and is really scratching the the arcade dirt racer itch. WIll hopefully get some multiplayer action on it tonight with a couple of friends.

Finished the first career thing, unlocked and started the second. Got absolutely annihilated in a race and got pissed off and rammed people until I wrecked. Well, time to dial down the diffi... oh it's on easy.

 

Should I be upgrading cars a lot more, or buying new ones or something? Apart from the 3 wheel race vs buses, I was almost lapping everyone on the beginners career section.

It's worth upgrading the cars, yeah. If you do the tournament mode (basically monthly challenges) you can unlock some better vehicles. 

 

The upgrade system is surprisingly fleshed out. Balancing out the right amount of armour vs performance upgrades adds a bit of depth.

God, the multiplayer on this is insanely good fun. Especially on the tracks where you have people driving in opposite directions on the same bit of track. There’s one track which is essentially a figure 8 with inclines at each end and a straight ramp in the middle which is fucking bonkers.

 

Most fun I’ve had with a game for a long time.

I didn't upgrade my cars when playing singleplayer, but I did buy every car I could afford and switched around - there's a basic rating system (A/B/C followed by numbers) which should help judge if your car is suitable. 

 

I'm enjoying the convenience of having the game on console, but the frame rate is really noticable - everything crossed for a 60fps update!

I got stuck on this at first also last night, trying to set up some demos with a couple of friends. You just have to cycle through a few different track locations as not all locations seem to have all race types available.

You'll learn the tracks and have a load of fun, absolutely play the single player as well.

Its all about car selection and getting your car setting right. Its not too complicated though. I usually do well online but not played in some time. Need to get back into it.

It’s 16, isn’t it? I was playing multiplayer with randoms last night and fairly sure it was 16. 
 

Again, I was absolutely hopeless and got wrecked in way too many races, but it’s still exciting even when you’re a backmarker. Perfect GamePass type game.

Anyone else find some of the Tournament dailies impossible to get gold on? I'm really struggling with the truck TT and the destruction derby one today. 

 

Update - posted that then got gold on the TT next go. I needed to brake a bit more on a couple of corners to stop over drifting.
