Steam early access available now...

Here's the blurb

and here's a video...

First and foremost, we’re building a FUN racing game with PERSONALITY. It’s all about the stuff that really matters: varied tracks, cool cars, and the defining once-in-the-lifetime moments that can be achieved only with true-to-life physics simulation.

If you’re familiar with the original FlatOut experience, you already know what we’re aiming at: exhilarating racing action with sophisticated physics and damage modeling, only this time we’re upping the ante on almost every front. This is the game we envisioned way back in the early 2000s, only re-imagined for today’s technology and gaming standards.
Oh, and we’ve got full-blown, straight-up demolition derbies, too, to go with your full contact racing.
The cars are old, cheap, banged up, patched together, rusty… just awesome! In short, our cars ooze with STYLE! You won’t find anything like them in other racing games.
We’ve got variety: everyone loves the old American heavy-hitters from the muscle car era, but we’re not neglecting the fun little European and Asian cars from the long-gone decades either. The best part is that you’ll be taking them apart and building them back up again in your garage. Need more horsepower on a budget? No problem, scour the classifieds for a bargain supercharger – just remember that a cheap bargain find might not withstand too much punishment!
The career is as much about your garage and your project cars as it is about racing.
Exciting Engine.
Our in-house ROMU engine is a beast. A hell-bent beast that’s precision-engineered for high-speed, breakneck racing. You could not create this experience with just any engine. The ROMU engine is all about heavy metal going way too fast and crashing into stuff.
At Bugbear we’re all about putting you in the driver’s seat. That’s why our engine is simulating everything, to give you great feedback on what your car is doing. You’ll feel the little bumps on the track, the weight of your car when you go over them – and most certainly you’ll feel it when you’re being dealt some damage, only that getting HURT has never before felt so good!
We can’t wait to show you what we can do with today’s hardware. Now we have fully dynamic visual car damage (no predefined damage models!), and the environments are more destructible than ever before.
Essentially, we can now put a ton of flying metal and dirt in the air at any given time, and we certainly will!

Pre Order here....

The weekend smasher deal is just the game (w Steam key) but you get early access build to play now (as seen in VVV videos). Then you get the full game once here.

I've been playing the early build through Steam, yeah.

Had some great moments where I've clipped the enemy AI in his muscle car and he's veered left and right across the track 4-5 times before finally spinning out.

That muscle car can be properly unwieldy though. I find the handling very similar to how I remember Driver to be honest.

There's a lovely weight to the muscle car though (shouldn't proper muscle cars be almost uncontrollable on corners anyway?) - feels good when you sideswipe someone on a bend and see them veer off into a wall of tyres that spray across the track. Coming round a corner to be met with a scene of devastation with 5 or 6 cars in a massive pileup is also great - especially if you weave through the debris without crashing and suddenly find yourself jumping up a good few places.

Oh god yeah! I wasn't saying the unwieldiness was a bad thing.

One thing I did notice in the last build was that the damage seemed to have been drastically reduced on the track races. Some cars were doing some insane barrel rolls after slamming into the concrete barriers, which would have normally devastated the cars appearance, but it was nowhere near as bad.

Still great fun though. I can see myself massively enjoying the career progression.

This is essentially Destruction Derby 2 - Next Gen edition

Thats both fantastic and kinda worrysome, fantastic because DD2 was fucking MENTAL fun, probably one of my most played PS1 games. Worrying because even in the early access of this game, it has the one massive flaw DD2 had: its next to impossible to win a race normally. In DD2 for example, with the massive pile ups and aggressive AI, you would always, always get knocked off the track at the first big corner thanks to a massive pile up or someone ramming you. The onyl way to win was to wait on the track and try and smash into oncoming traffic as it gave you points you could use to win the race without ever crossing the finish line. So far the best ive managed in NCG is 2nd place, and i did that by taking massive shortcuts, and still had a wipe out or two caused by AI ramming me

Yeah...well more like Flatout Ultimate basically - but its more tactile and theres more weight. The first game had odd an odd "slideyness" (but i agree it was still fun).

People moaned about Flatout being quite hard as many objects had weight to them that sent the cars into unrecoverable spins. Thats a bit like this but i can't say i care. I usually get annoyed at restarting a race but this is not a game i ever minded restarting. Ever race feels vastly different and thats refreshing.

The skill is looking ahead - which is easier in this game as its sharper and the track clears as you progress as objects tend to get scattered clear.

My main point was...how on earth do you expect a race like this to progress?

(Okay its a game but its a game portraying a real life situation - so like anything it takes skill)

Make the cars any slower and it'll be shite so you have to employ avoidance strategies and learn to hit the cars.

We had some good MP races with Ultimate

I've tried the playground and they manage the damage model in the full game it'll be awesome. Unfortunately already seems like they've toned down the damage model in the latest demo?

Yeah it's toned down but hopefully that's more to allow people to be able to finish a race :) it certainly needs balancing but it's an early Alpha demo so they can get a few quid in from Steam - I expect the damage model in game will be tweaked a fair bit before it's classed as complete.

haha, if I didn't know that was a comment off the bottom of that page I linked then I would think you most strange indeed.

Not sure that commenter has much authority but hopefully it's a nothing story.

Always had this on my watch list but a lack of updates left players rather disgruntled since early access way back in 2013

March 2018 and the game seems to be the logical successor to the last Flatout game, picked up by THQ its now basically the game it should have been at launch, full career mode now. Thought id give it a go as the overwhelmingly positive reviews are just glowing.

I find dints scrapes and deformed bodywork in real time so much more interesting than gleaming cars, and the bump and grind racing is never cheap and just so much fun. Its coming to consoles this year too.

most fun ive had with a racer for a long time.

I didn't have high hopes for this given the lack of decent updates over the past couple of years but I'm chuffed to see its back on track. Flatout: UC was my favourite racer from the 360 era and this looks to be more of that. Dunno if I'm quite ready to drop £25 on it but I'm itching to play it.

I've always wondered why the 'destruction derby' racer formula wasn't more popular; its some of the most fun I've had in an online game.

Getting some great reviews. Its a very solid game and like flatout, it has an almost perfect degree of randomness.

So much so, that you never mind replaying a race you've lost. And the slight of 100's of tyres flying up at once is great.

Where's the cheapest place for this. I'm willing to pay a decent price but I think it's close to £40 on Steam. Anywhere cheaper? I'm not up to speed on the PC sales places yet.
