The new colouring is the bit that intrigues me. Is this the only version you get that in, or have they updated the paperbacks etc?

Absolute are best dor the shelf and perusing, but somewhat unwieldy - I rather a nice normal version for actually reading.

Yeah, all new TPB printings and digital versions have the new colouring. Well, it’s not that new anymore. Think it’s at least a decade old now.

There are ‘Deluxe’ Editions which collect 2 TPBS each and are hardcover. 
 

I have a stack of Absolute editions but don’t think I’ve ever actually read one from start to finish. They weigh a ton. 
 

I’m pretty much exclusively digital now anyway. iPad screen makes everything look fantastic.

Me too. Despite whatever I might say to the contrary, the real reason I bought a 12'' Pro was to read comics :) . 

 

Money well spent as far as I'm concerned.

Was he an usher or selling tickets? There was a bit of turnover around the time I joined but the name does a ring a bell.

 

Still my favourite job. Must have watched Mission: Impossible about twenty times.

Get the Deluxe, I own several editions of Sandman in TPB. Absolutes are the pinnacle but when I go to read Sandman I always pick up the Deluxe versions. My Absolutes sit on the shelves looking pretty, and I only break down out when I want to read Sandman from the start to finish again.

yes. That was true of the first two books of the comic as well.

 

Yep, and they were more typical of where the comic went too.

Well, it’s a game of two halves, isn’t it Ron? The first half of which can’t escape its source material, which issue #8 aside, is a retread of Moore and Morrison’s earlier journeys in Swamp Thing and Animal Man.

 

In fairness, they try a great deal to create connecting tissue and file off the DCU edges, but that opening narration is an absolute disaster and betrays a lack of faith with just opening the summoning ritual. It’s not needed and brings the story to a clattering halt even before it really starts. And I do miss Etrigan, plus imagine the Oreos cross-promotion we could have been having right now if they’d included the Martian Manhunter and Scott Free.

 

Jenna Coleman is actually decent as Constantine. But then, I am one of the seemingly few people on the planet that liked Clara.

 

Having Lucifer do the duel sits uneasily with me; yes, I guess it sets up Season of Mists in the wake of defeat, but the idea of them losing in that way doesn’t quite work in the same way that it does with Choronzon in the comic. And I really didn’t like the change with Matthew’s intervention.

 

24/7 is…well, it’s there. As a lesson of how comics can do some forms of storytelling better than film or books. I am biased here, as I think 24 Hours is one of the best comics that Gaiman has ever done…and this is…lifeless. The increasing horror and depravity of the panels, the counting of the hours…almost all  completely elided over in 24/7 in favour of a bland orgy and a toothless mutilation montage.

 

The Sound of Her Wings: it’s difficult to fuck this up and they don’t. Kirby Howell-Baptiste nails it - and aside from not looking like Cinamon Hadley, she plays this exactly as written in #8 (aside from ‘peachy keen’), so I don’t get what the complaining is about aside from, you know.

 

The Doll’s House is much better. It was where Gaiman found his feet in the comic and provides a more coherent storyline here in the show. PLUS MARTIN TENBONES! But it makes the series feel really odd - this is two completely separate stories, bridged by The Sound of Her Wings / Hob Gadling.

 

It’d make more sense to have split this into two releases and start Series 2 with the Hob Gadling story…(the dream sequences don’t really work as well as they did in the comics, either. EXCEPT FOR MARTIN TENBONES, obviously). The Problem With Lyta Hall is nicely sidestepped*, and Gault’s motivations are  stronger than Brute & Glob’s; plus the redemption at the end is a welcome addition. Fry is pretty much the only person who could carry off Gilbert, so I’m glad he puts in an adequate showing here. The CGI background in the driving scenes are as bad as 1950s rear-projection, mind you, and the resolution in Fiddler’s Green felt really stilted. But better than the John Dee bits, I guess.

 

What do we think for Season 2? Season of Mists, Calliope, A Midsummer’s Night Dream, and…maybe trying to squeeze in A Game Of You given that they’ve already spent the money on MARTIN TENBONES?

Through 24/7 and The Sound of Her Wings. A cut above but tend to agree with what's already been said

24/7 is tense but it's also pretty nasty and it works better as comic than live action. The Dream sequence at the end seemed a little perfunctory.

 

Giant Dream holding John is going to be a meme at some point and I think they missed a real opportunity for full cosmic Dream. His eyes should have been stars with the flame clothing. Absolute missed opportunity.

 

The Sound of Her Wings is indeed hard to fuck up, and they indeed didn't. Actress was pretty good though Gaiman has done a lot of interviews about the "sorry excuse for an anthropological entity" being really hard for actresses. That's because it's a shit line in love action and should even excuses.

 

It absolutely should not have had Men of Good Fortune  stuck onto it. Partly for the reasons given already about it undercutting the emotional impact but also because that story is strong enough to stand on its own and this is a streaming platform were if you want to mess with the structure of episodes you can.

 

The worst piece of cast swapping in the whole thing is Hob Galding is not ginger. I thought the acting was a little uneven across the sequence.

 

One comic question because I'm not sure if I made this up

Death is incredibly touchy feely here In the comics, Death touching you was the end, right? That was part of the reason for the day mortal etc

 

Those 2 were 5, still about 3/5 so far.
