Neil Gaiman's Sandman - Now Netflix/WB co-production

It’s a combination of awful inking and the very limited colour palette of the time. And also the first book is not good - or why anyone ever talks about it. It improves tremendously from issue eight onwards.

Regarding the colour palette: they did recolour Preludes and Nocturnes for modern printing capabilities, for the Absolute editions and other reprints. Though as with other recolourings like Batman: The Killing Joke, there are some purists who prefer the original, more garish version.

As for the good bits of that first arc: "24 Hours" (issue 6) is definitely very effective at what it's aiming for.

Spoiler

Although I'll probably skip the episode that adapts that issue! 😬

Modern recolouring of older comics almost always look terrible - the pencils and inks weren't done for it in mind, and it just looks wrong. It's like adding a film effect to 70s VT sequences. Sure, you can do it, but why?

*steps off soapbox*

DC trying to crowbar their universe into Gaiman's work and it shows.

Eh, Sandman always has an explicit link to DC - it's just Gaiman getting to grips with it. He does much better by the time he gets to Lyta Hall…

the script at the end of dream country (for calliope) has comments like “don’t use pink because by the time it’s printed it’ll be purple”. By dream country the colouring is a lot better though.

This is just, like, my opinion.  But I think the start of the first book is great - the storyline with

Spoiler

Dream getting captured, then all the Burgess stuff, 70 years passes in the waking world, and Dream's eventual escape and revenge.

It's a classic story arc, I think. Very imaginative and original and it's one of the bits I hope they manage to capture the essence of in the TV show. The second part of the book is where it gets a bit uninspired.

Anyway don't know if people are considering Gaiman tweets as potential spoilers, but just in case ... He just tweeted that

Spoiler

The second half of the first series (so I guess that means from Episode 5 onwards) will be The Dolls House. Which is good news because it sounds like the storyline, to start with at least, is following the comics to some extent.

The recoloured early issues of Sandman are one of the few examples of recolouring that I would say actually improves the original artwork. It looks like they tried to do it in a way that looks like something they could have done in the late eighties; most recoloured art has all sorts of computer shading and gradients that would have been impossible at the time, and looks odd when combined with the original art. Case in point: the revised Miracleman, which looks awful.

I saw the first episode yesterday and thought it was excellent. Sturridge as Morpheus was a particular standout .

There's only one change that left me disappointed

Spoiler

Eternal sleep instead of eternal awakening.

Other than that I thought they have done an excellent job of tying things together. Can't wait to devour the rest on Friday.🤩

What a strange change to make!

The writing is what kept me hooked on the first book (talking about TPBs, which is how I came to the series). I've often commented on how I think a lot of the art in the series is ghastly.

Just listened to Marc Maron talking to Gaiman this week. At least as far as he's concerned the show is exactly what he wants it to be. No artistic compromises, no kowtowing to the studio.

Skipped all the posts since this was released so apologies if I'm covering old ground - haven't watched it yet but just read the episode descriptions!

Oh wow, didn't realise we were getting 10 episodes dropped on us in one go! That's like having a 10 hour long Sandman movie to watch tonight. Very excited.

the guardian reviewer really liked 24 hours.

Sorry but Guardian gave the new RE TV series 4/5. Soooo.......

However, looking forward to watching this despite it looking like a YA movie. But going to watch Prey first tonight

Yeah. Episode One works far better than I expected.

Comics, whole sequence, spoiler:

Spoiler

They do seem to have ruled out the Overture with the specifics of that start, in order to really set the first season up with the "villain".

And just sitting in the cage Sturridge embodied Morpheus well enough (in a way that didn't come across in the selected other character snippets) that I'm not concerned about the rest.

I watched through the whole season yesterday together with my daughter and loved every second. So many amazing moments that I never thought I'd get to see in live action. There was a moment in the last minutes that made me fanboy out like never before though;

Spoiler

 When a comics-perfect Azazel has a discussion with Lucifer.😍

And done, fan-fucking-tastic.

Loved this from start to finish, would have liked to see more of the Endless but that's the nature of the beast in what being adapted but what is spent with them is great.

Sure there are small story changes from the books but all worked, guess that's the bonus of having Gaiman so closely involved.

Spoiler

Really like Jed being "Sandman" instead of Hector Hall.

Great ending as well, have to agreed with @Mr.Crowley spoiler, left me with a cheesy grin.

Here's hoping for a long run on Netflix and that they don't shit can it after 1 series.

I watched to The Sound of Her Wings last night. It turns out it's actually pretty good! I think there was only one bit that stuck as being poor

Spoiler

Matthew the Raven's terrible Tinkerbell pep talk during the fight with Lucifer.

But the rest of it has been pretty good. Which is nice.

Watched 3 episodes and am not really sure why. It’s a terrible adaptation, completely missing the point of the comic despite heavy involvement from Gaiman.

It might be a bit obvious to say this, but it’s my favourite comic of all time and pretty much single handedly kept me going through some difficult times in the late 80s.

Every change is for the worse and the acting is below Eastenders level for the most part. The script is often banal and it simply doesn’t flow like the comic does.

I will probably keep watching in the hope it improves but by god is it awful so far. They even muck up minor characters l8ke Mad Hettie

I'm 4 episodes in and enjoying it. Feels a bit BBC at times, and while I like most of what Sturridge is doing he is playing the part a little naive, which doesn't sit well with me as an entity who's been around forever.

Spoiler

The contest with Lucifer tickled me. Surely that game goes the same way every time right? It's like a playground contest that ends with Infinity+1. I rolled my eyes when he came out with "Hope" as a winning move.

The comparisons to BBC dramas is off-putting. Can't stomach them at all, constant music and sound going off. Here is a sad bit (sad music), wee heey funny bit (funny music) and constant shouting with emotions turned up to 11.

No thanks!

Well, silly me for having an opinion that doesn’t match yours.

That's generally the case with the vast majority of your posts tbh. Maybe it's all of us who are wrong.

I blame the hive mind.

I’ve not had a chance to watch any of it yet (on bloody holiday innit!) but I find it very hard to believe that Neil Gaiman, one of the finest fantasy authors this country has ever produced, the man who has spent the last 35 years creating these incredible stories and tales, a man who has a literary brain the size of Venus has somehow….missed the point? OK then.

I get that it meant a lot to you, did to me too and there’s every chance I’ll be disappointed as I’ve spent the best part of my adult life imagining what it would be like but I think it will be my problem, not Gaiman’s.

It's ok - this is the spoiler friendly thread. What is the real point of Preludes and Nocturnes, and how has it been missed across the first three episodes?

No need to be cryptic.
