Levitt has tweeted this morning that he's only attached to produce at the moment, there's been no commitment for him to direct or star yet but that may come later.

I'm not familar with Sandman at all, though it's one of those titles that you've heard about a thousand times, so I've no idea if Levitt is a good fit for an adaptation.

The Sandman looks like The Cure's Robert Smith when he was young and had better hair.

I quite liked the human private investigator version; the chubby, middle-aged, shy American man who wore a gas mask and put people to sleep with knock-out gas.

No one is, it's unfilmable.

Its not unfilmable - its just that you are never going to do justice to any of the story arcs in 2-3hrs film time.

Its far from the first time the Sandman has had its movie rights attached anyway so no need to get excited - it will never happen.

Decent budget and HBO and we could be talking however

FWIW that's the 'real' DC Sandman - Gaiman was asked to reinvent the character and came up with Dream.

The original Sandman does show up a couple of times in the Gaiman comics

So, as you might know if you like to follow these sorts of things, a while back, David Goyer and I made a producing deal with Warner Brothers to develop a movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN. Neil himself came on as an executive producer, we hired the excellent screenwriter, Jack Thorne, and we started in on the ambitious task of adapting one of the most beloved and boundary-pushing titles in the world of comics. I was pleased with the progress we were making, even though we still had quite a ways to go.


Recently, as you also might know if you like to follow these sorts of things, the sorta "ownership" (for lack of a better term) of the Sandman material changed hands when Warner Brothers shifted the entire catalogue of Vertigo comics (an imprint of DC) to their subsidiary, New Line. And a few months ago, I came to realize that the folks at New Line and I just don't see eye to eye on what makes Sandman special, and what a film adaptation could/should be. So unfortunately, I decided to remove myself from the project. I wish nothing but the best for the team moving forward.


I'd like to thank all the great people I've had the opportunity to work with on this one. I've had a blast with and learned a ton from David and Jack. Niija Kuykendall, Greg Silverman, and everyone at Warner Brothers have been fantastic, as have Geoff Johns and everyone at DC. And it's been a particular privilege as well as a rocking good time getting to know Mr. Gaiman, whose generous insights and masterful work have certainly convinced me that the Lord of Dreams and the Prince of Stories are one and the same Endless pattern.

No official statement has come from Warner Bros. Television or Netflix just yet, but with San Diego Comic-Con just weeks ago the official announcement could come during one of WBTV’s many panels. THR notes that the series comes with a “massive financial commitment” from both DC Entertainment and Netflix, with the streaming service always eager for the next big thing in television.

 

There have been countless attempts to turn the seminal Sandman comics into live-action adaptations before, dating back into the 90s when the series began. Recently Joseph Gordon-Levitt was attached to star in and direct a feature film adaptation at WB’s New Line Cinema before that version failed to materialize.

 

Sandman, which launched DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, ran for 75 issues beginning in 1989. Gaiman’s worlds-within-worlds weaved an episodic anthology, focusing on the allegorical character of Dream and his brothers and sisters, known as the Endless (Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny).

 

The Sandman series adaptation marks another high-profile comic adaptation for Netflix, which already has Dark Horse’s Umbrella Academy in production on a second season along with many Mark Millar works like The Magic Order & Jupiter’s Legacy.

This isn't news about any screen adaptation, but the cast list has been released for the audio adaptation that Dirk Maggs (who produced and directed the post-Douglas Adams Hitchhiker's Guide radio series, among many other things) has been working on:

Some surprising names there... but ones that I think will fit well!

 

Not sure the choice of actor for Hob Gadling will be too popular on this forum, but it could be worse, they could have chosen his former comedy partner...

 

Presumably Kim Newman will be playing the book critic/interviewer from the "Calliope" story? :P (Can't find a picture right now but that character in the comic used his likeness.)
