Also how can you have cross play between next gen and current gen and have bigger bases on next gen??

There's already disparity between the console and PC base size allowances.

...

It says in the patch notes that PSVR support is enabled through PS4 back compat, so I'm assuming it doesn't have upgraded visuals in that mode. PSVR mode launches a separate executable already I think. If/when we see a next gen PSVR HMD that will presumably be supported.

It is kind of odd that they never switched on the quicksilver MTX. I guess they promised that they would never charge for updates. Perhaps they're planning to eventually (when they make the base game free) or they used it for the Chinese-exclusive PC version? There's loads of stuff in the quicksilver shop now and it would be a massive pain to farm enough through missions if you were starting from scratch.

I've only played a couple of hours of this via Game Pass, but the pop-in is horrific and really off-putting. Not sure what I make of the actual game yet, either, though I'll play some more. But already I find the character movement quite odd, though I can't quite articulate why, and I'm not sure I like it. The UI seems quite unhelpful too. And what is the deal with carrying capacity? Why does picking up a few bits of carbon reduce my capacity by about 10,000 spaces?

Are there any good guides for those starting out to try and make sense of everything?

I find the 3rd person to be a bit weird, but prefer 1st person nearly always anyway.

I am not sensitive to pop in so don't even notice it really. I occasionally notice a hill appears then grows, then shrinks to fit some vegetation, but it is just part of the engine and does not irritate me, it is just an effect of the background proc gen stuff working out what should be there.

I am not sure about the storage thing you are seeing. Each 'slot' can take some thousands of a single type of resource, so I guess once you pick up 1 unit of thing then you have reduced the ability to carry <max storage> of some other element. One of the game play loops is expanding your storage so I guess it is meant to be limiting to start off with. It used to be amazingly bad... like each slot could take 50 or 100 of a resource!

It is not a game for everyone for sure, note that the next expansion (probably in a few weeks I would guess) has performance and graphics changes so maybe will work on the pop in (It is the load time that gets me!)

The space thing is that each slot can take 9999 of the resources or varying stacks of components. Follow the quests from the beginning and get your base and frigate as that alleviates carrying unnecessary shit around.

Also every time you jump to a new system make sure to go to the Space Station and buy the inventory slot from the Suit upgrades guy.

And search planets for drop pods, which contain  a free slot upgrade that you can install after repairing it with easy to obtain materials, once you have the refiner blueprint.

First step should be to find a hospitable homeworld and construct a simple base, Follow the base building questline and most of the basic tech & construction blueprints come pretty quickly.

So I think 2 milestones are broken on my save: Survivalist and Zoologist

Both are still at level 0 for many months, probably well over a year now while all of the others are at level 10. Survivalist is stuck at 4.5 out of 5 Sol, Zoologist tells me I have 0 planets with all fauna found.

I am very hard-pressed to believe I never ever spend any time outside during extreme weather. Also, is it me or is the last animal on any given planet the most rare and hidden piece of fauna ever? I swear I've wandered around for hours to find the last animal that's classified as "appears everywhere 24/7" and it rarely if ever shows. I have far too many planets with 1 animal remaining to be found...

Survivalist is often considered to be broken, but it’s consecutive ‘sols’ only that count, so if you spend 5 sols on an extreme planet and then jump off world, the counter will not increase again until you spend 6 sols on another extreme planet without leaving. If you don’t tend to hang around on one planet then you won’t see it go up very often. (edit - that’s how it used to be, possibly they fixed it but from your experience it sounds like they didn’t).

Scanning all fauna on a planet is a pretty major task - there are always one or two that are very rare, so it’s unlikely you’d get that unless you were specifically trying to. I don’t think you can expect it to just happen in the course of playing. You know that though. It used to be much harder as it didn’t tell you where you could find the missing ones. Cave dwellers and swimmers are the real pain.. some of them don’t spawn unless you are at a certain geographical height - I’ve seen critters that spawned in a lake when I stood on the shore but disappeared when I got into the water, and they were usually just out of range of my scanner.

If I don’t find what I’m looking for within a certain timeframe I usually head up to orbit, come back down at a different location and hope the random spawn generator delivers the goods.

Well, both ticked yesterday after I complained

Zoologist - you need to manually upload the fauna section separately. It does not count if you upload everything in a batch. Weird design choice.

Survivalist - I just ticked the 3rd milestone. Found a neat sub-zero planet with extreme white-outs like every handful of minutes which means plenty of Storm Crystals. Building a base as I type this, nice.

So I only just started this, I'm doing the missions that I assume teach you how to play and use the UI. There is a hell of a lot of busy work, so much farming and crafting, is the rest of the game like this? I was hoping for an exploratory experience not a do menial tasks for an hour so you can explore for 5 minutes.

Just get through the tutorial missions. As soon as you get warp capabilities you can hop about to your heart's content.

Sweet thanks, for now it just seemed like even walking a few hundred metres on a planet meant having to constantly be collecting shit.

What the hell? So basically they’ve only just thought to test that and discovered it doesn’t work?

So presumably that’ll be exactly the same with Star Wars Squadrons then? I’m sure I read an article recently that said that PSVR would actually take advantage of the advanced processing power of the PS5 too. How did Sony only just realise this??

It’s been known for a while, basically you have to play the PS4 version of a game in back compatibility to use PSVR. So you’d be fine with Star Wars Squadrons as it doesn’t have a PS5 version. Not sure how that would work for NMS* but it’s probably a PSVR outlier, as most won’t be updated.

As for taking advantage of the extra power supposedly it does as with all back compat titles although because of the strict certification requirements about hitting frame rates etc they are there but aren’t particularly noticeable, not as much as then would be in pancake games with poor frame rates that are suddenly stable.

*Edit: just thought PS5 doesn’t do smart delivery type stuff so I guess you could if you wanted have both versions installed, PS5 for pancake and PS4 for VR and use the cloud saves if you were to switch between. Or just use the PS4 version if all you are doing is VR.

So you can have two different versions of the same game installed on one console then? I guess that’s one way around it.

They’ve said with Squadrons that it’ll have better lighting on the PS5, but that doesn’t count as separate version then?

I suppose on the upside that this won’t affect that many games, but it’s a bit of a shame they didn’t seem to care about the issue or publicise it very much. Another example of a slightly rushed next gen console release due to corona I guess.

Not 100% sure, that was a bit of a presumption as PS5 doesn’t do the smart delivery thing that Xbox does and I think they are listed separately in the store.

Trying to think how you’d get around it otherwise- I’m not sure if you get the choice whether you upgrade a game to the PS5 version do you? And if it’s an online game, don’t they have to be patched to the latest version in order to play online?

Good find, thanks! The trouble is that despite what the headline suggests, they only tried doing it for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, but I’ll give it a try with Squadrons. Hopefully the save game issues won’t be thing if I just play the PS4 version.

The Squadrons update isn’t live yet so NMS would be the best test. Luckily as a procedural game it doesn’t take up that much space and I guess there is little disadvantage from running the PS4 version of an external HDD.

I didn't think PSVR worked on PS5 versions of games?

From the article "Keep in mind, to play in PSVR on PS5 you need to make sure and install the PS4 version, not the PS5 version of the game." So yeah, you're right but they've buffed the PS4 version on PS5.

I tried this last night, it did indeed look a lot clearer in the space station, but when I tried warping somewhere else it crashed.  It crashed again when I flew out of the space station,  and crashed again when I finally made it to a planet.

Anyone else been able to try it?

Just had a very quick look from the beginning. It's certainly a lot clearer and the menus are waaaay better. However. I sold my ps4 pad as I thought I didn't need it anymore. I forgot about VR . Have to try moves tomorrow but first impressions are very good.
