Here’s a tip for making money in the early game. There are abandoned ouposts dotted about covered in alien goo. They will also likely be surrounded by “whispering eggs” - if you destroy them with your mining laser they will drop larval cores which are worth mad bank. BUT, you will also summon a pack of “biological horrors” which look like xenomorphs crossed with scorpions which swarm you. However, these horrors are firmly stuck to the ground so you can easily escape them by jetpacking away onto the roof of the outpost.

So you can get into a loop where you stand on the roof of the outpost, peer over and shoot one of the eggs with your laser, let it drop its core, fall down and pick it up, and then quickly fly back up onto the roof before the horrors can kill you, wait for your shield to recharge, and then repeat.

For some reason it seems that only one larval core can spawn at a time, so you will have to go one by one. The horrors can easily overwhelm you, so you should err on the side of caution and jet out as soon as you’re taking damage. It can be fiddly to actually target the core and pick it up, especially when you’re under attack. And you should make sure you parked your ship nearby so that you saved when you exited.

Those cores really add up. I just cleared a cool 2 mill on my game.

I’m loving third person mode now. It gives a much greater sense of your place in the world.

It really doesn’t. It feels like you’re a clunky mannequin barely interacting with things.

yep i've been doing this today. Made about 4 million. My one bit of advice is don't panic

Not sure if this is known but for people who find crashed ships. you don't have to repair all the slots. I just fixed the launch thrusters and the pulse engine, flew it into the space station and then traded it as it was for a 21 slot ship (my damaged on was 22 slots). i think i paid an extra 80,000 on top which is nothing for a brand new working ship. i looked at about 30 ships before i made my mind up :)

You could take a note of the longs and lats (available in the scanning visor) and then try to navigate back somehow. Not sure how, mind. Would be fun to see if you can manage it though.

Well, yeah, but no. An easy way to find and mark places you have discovered, so you can an easily find them again, should be one of the first features in a game that is all about exploration.

Make it so, Sean.

Do beacons not exist any more?

The point is that despite all the amazing tech, galaxy map, etc - how have to rely on a beacon? What ass.

I'd hope that if the game keeps being expanded they might add proper intelligent life, including cities. Not just space ports etc.

I say cities, start with mud huts and progress. Effectively turn the game into one where you can replay Where Time Stood Still on the Spectrum.

Yeah they do, they're available to me at least.

Those that have done it, what's the process for restoring your pre-upgrade base? I built a signal booster, entered navigation data and searched for habital bases. It flagged one on another planet, so over I went but when I got there it was an outpost. I tried again and the target definitely said some sort of building (forget the wording), but again when I get there it's a normal outpost.

Bug?

Tip: I bought a multi tool upgrade for my scanner. To install it, don't try to transfer to your tool and install. Try to install while it's on your suit inventory and then hit R1 to cycle to multi tool, where you can hit x to install it. I believe it stacked with the other scanner stuff.

Military scanner doesn't stack with scanners, I guess it'll stack with a bolt thing or some other took weapon.

I have to say I'm with you on this. I don't think it is quite as clunky as you say, but seeing your character just vanish into the ship just pulls me out of it. And third person mode is never as immersive. Remember when GTA V got a first person mode and people were raving about how much more immersed you felt in the world? I like to be up close to everything I'm exploring. So yeah, 3rd person mode is a bit of a novelty in my opinion.

On a separate note, finding lots more bugs since this update. Planets having red dots appear as though it's a new creature, but there is bugger all there to scan. Getting killed and your grave doesn't appear anywhere even though it shows up on the compass bar. The wrong inventory showing up for my ship (it keeps showing me the inventory for the broken starship I discovered near the beginning that has so many broken parts to it.

Talking of red dots, why do the dog sentinels scan with them? It did it on the PS4 and I assumed it was just a bug, but it does it on the Xbox as well. They show the red dot, but there isn't anything to scan.

I know people have said how the PS4 gets loud playing this. But I'm finding it gives the X a workout as well, particularly on my freighter where it really ramps up. Yet in space with dozens of asteroids it is silent. It gets loud when I first land on a planet as well, but settles after a couple of minutes. But definitely one of the louder games fan noise wise. Almost up there with Wolfenstein 2, which was really loud.

If only there was some way to toggle between them, so you could just choose the one you like.

Gah, starting the main quest line in a friend’s game is proving to be a nightmare. I’ve just got to the bit where I need to fuel the hyperdrive, and no matter how many times I do it it doesn’t progress. I’m guessing the place I need to warp to is so far away I can’t  reach it with one full hyperdrive, so it doesn’t know what to do.

Hopefully if I can do that step back in my mate’s game that will get me to the more open part of the game, which will hopefully allow me to progress in my own world.

Still hopelessly addicted, regardless.

Bug?

The problem with using a Signal Booster to locate a Habitable Base site to restore your pre-update base is they’ve change the search to Habitable Outpost which now includes a multitude of structures, not just bases. I searched for ages hoping I’d get lucky but instead just kept finding Observatories, Outposts, Transmission Towers, etc. I realised that I’d need to be on a planet that only had Habitable Bases in it to limit the search and effectively force it to show me the location. Hope that makes sense. It’s the hexagonal planets (something I discovered pre-update and remains true in Next).

Gonna see if there is any value in strip mining my old base for resources today and then continue the search for a suitable planet to build on.

Had first crash last night, was on a planet with the floating gold rods - it had rings around it and every time I tried to go there the game just shit the bed :D

Apparently they're patching the problem of finding somewhere to restore your old base.

I’ve found a flying version of that.

Stumped early game though. Need to mine copper but it’s all deep under water :(

I did that. A lot. For ages.

It’ll show as a triangle. If you’ve not found something, walk for a few minutes and scan again (with the analysis visor, not the scanner); or fly for about ten seconds and scan again.
