No Man's Sky - Interceptor

The only thing that still fucks me off about this game is high activity Sentinel planets. They're no fun. I've still not figured out how the hell you're supposed to lose them entirely. The only way I can is get into my ship and run from the Interceptors untill pulse drive comes back and I make a break for the space station. What am I missing?

Edit: Sentinel pillars turn off the whole planets force? How the hell do you find those and not just stumble across them like I just did?

Can't you turn Sentinels off in the custom options now, or do Expedition saves not let you change options?

You can buy maps for Sentinel pillars at Space Stations iirc. I generally don't remember them being that hard to outrun even on extreme planets? In-atmosphere flying or using a vehicle or mount is usually enough. I find interceptors spawn very very rarely when I play but maybe I've just subconsciously gotten into the habit of avoiding high activity planets.

The map from the space station is good to know, cheers. In this instance I can't buy a sentinel pillar map because the fucking space station in the Expedition system is dead.

You don't have a choice if the expedition objective is on them and I've never been able to outrun them. They turn up and I try to fly off them the Interceptors turn up and the only way to outrun them is destroy the ones chasing you and pulse to a space station.

This is why I think I'm doing something wrong. Yesterday I had like 6 sentinels turn up on planet, I destroyed them and then even more turned up. I tried hiding underground until the countdown went away but they just stayed in proximity and it all kicked off again when I popped up out of the ground.

I've noticed that as well, on rare occasions Sentinels do not disengage which means combat music and the sentinel icons on your HUD all the time. Not sure what causes it, all I know is a space jump fixes it (probably space station/freighter teleport works as well).

There are Sentinel Pillars quests from the faction vendors, check those at any space station but they might not be on the planet you need. You can buy a map from a vendor but again might not be on the planet you need.

To escape sentinals I do this AMAZING gameplay loop that is super cool!

I use the dig tool to make a short tunnel

I use the 'fill' tool to block of the tunnel

I wait 30 seconds for them to stop searching

I open the tunnel and do the thing....

Repeat whenever they get pissed off at you.

It ain't great... but if you get in your ship and fly away it just ends in pain.

I finally got around to transferring my PS4 save data to my PS5 and the Golden Condor is back in action! Spent my lunch break with the old girl swooping across the surface of new planets and I can feel the pull to get stuck back into this. You get missions from the Nexus in the that big sphere you can summon, yers?

Maps aren't locked to specific planets, and I think if a planet has Sentinels it's got to have pillars, so if you can get to another system and snag a map you should be good to go. It is a massive PITA though.

Expedition 9 is trash. For some reason you can not craft outside of your base yet the game asks you to venture out. So if you find your starship out of fuel and you lack the materials to craft fuel you have to gather resources to build a base before you can craft the materials needed for the fuel.

🤨

Tip: gather as much Chromatic Metal or Copper as you can all the time, you need loads of it. Also Ferrite but thats always in abundance .

I finally got my arse into gear and got a PS5. NMS feels alarmingly buggy at the moment. Had a crash going out of atmosphere almost immediately. UI elements for industry stuff (generators etc.) are a glitched out mess. Framerate is butter smooth but pop-in is worse than I've ever seen it.

I hope it's just post-big-update teething troubles and there will be a hotfix along soon. 😕

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but there is so many versions of the game available I don't know the answer...

If I were to buy the vanilla No Man's Sky on PS4, would I be able to play it on PSVR with a download?  Or do I have to buy the Beyond version?  Or is the PS4 VR version not even available any more, now PSVR2 is out?  I checked on the PS Store but the info there was only for PS5 VR..

Sorry.

Every update ever released for No Man's Sky has been free so no matter where you buy the game from it'll update to the latest version. I think it detects whether VR is present and boots the game into the according mode. No VR? Just normal game. When I had my PSVR set up ages ago I could play either with headset or just normal.

Thanks a lot!  A friend is going to lend me their psvr and I always fancied trying NMSVR out.  How did you find it?

Immersive but the lack of fidelity is a bit of a disappointment. It doesn't  look great but it's absolutely worth giving a go. Being in a space ship in VR is just wonderful.

The latest version was mainly  a VR update so it maybe better now (I have not tried it since tho)

On PSVR 2 version is said to be very much like the original PSVR game, so I’m not sure. I think it’s pretty great mind if a tad fuzzy here and there.

  • 3 weeks later...

In preparation for transferring my old saves over to the PS5 version I went back into this game yesterday. My original Permadeath save was gone somehow… so with my entire family watching some boring ass Baseball cup upstairs I started a new one and set off for the centre of the galaxy.

I got there 7 hours later (with a break for dinner), still using my starting ship and without any exosuit/multi tool upgrades, or a freighter. Fucking hell they took the ’epic’ out of this game didn’t they. Not to say I didn’t enjoy it (or I wouldn’t have done it) but I’m kind of missing the days when that was a real struggle and a massive achievement.

I guess the portals are mostly responsible. It’s a bit of a shame because the incredible size of the galaxy in the game was very hard to comprehend until you tried to get two characters to the same planet. Even after doing so, it’s quite hard to comprehend how they managed it. But now with the portals, everything feels much smaller.

I then loaded up my original normal save, to find myself standing outside next to my ship in the cold void of space, with “SHIELDS DOWN” and “CRITICAL DAMAGE DETECTED” as the HUD flashed red. Managed to get back into the cockpit before death, my freighter was in the same system but far away - looked at my list of discoveries and they all have generic names, the space station teleporter is inactive because it thinks I haven’t been to any other locations, and most of my installed gear is listed as ‘obsolete technology’.

It’s really sad that everything got wiped in one of the many upgrades they did. I hope they never do that again.

I’ll give this a go… again.

NMS must hold some kind of record as the most restarted game for me. On paper it always seems like the game I imagined as a kid then I play it and fall asleep after about 20 minutes.

I disagree there - I recently wanted to speed run a trip to the galactic centre on a new save. Rather than just fix up my ship and leave the planet, like you used to do, I was forced to build a base and do all this other shite I had no interest in. I thought I was going to be sent to a home store to pick out the perfect curtains, then gather the materials needed to weave them before it would let me leave.

edit - although you did say ‘for several years’, so maybe this has all been in place for much longer than I’m aware of.

It's a while since I've played (the number of updates is perhaps too overwhelming), but you can get to the centre of the galaxy that quickly now? Disappointing if true. I used to like feeling so far away from it.
