What's the experience of this like now if you just want to play it how it was at launch, hopping from planet to planet, not building a base, not buying a friggate or any of that? Does it have the same odd balance of emptiness and busyness?

I remember at one point after one of the big updates hit trying to google for impressions and finding a Kotaku article about where to find the ingredients for a chocolate cake, and as daft as it sounds, the idea that they'd added recipies for chocolate cake in the game made me nope out of reinstalling it.

You can ignore all that shit once you've got past the tutorials. You can just jump in a ship and hop about the universe if you want. You'll have to make the rudiments of a base, and get a freighter just to get rid of the annoying quest log but once you're past that you can fuck it all of and just warp around to your hearts content.

With the current build, the cooking is largely irrelevant, which is good in that it can easily be ignored and bad in that it can easily be ignored.

The support that has been put behind NMS is really impressive. What started as patching a game that felt unfinished has become almost a title all its own.

There hasn't been a turnaround like it. There aren't many games which tanked in price after launch and then climbed in value second hand a year after.

This dead ship stuff looks really atmospheric, but I'm not convinced by the gameplay there. I was hoping for big aliens and thrilling firefights, looks a bit weak on that front. Still 'noping' out on this update when it comes to playing it in VR, mind!

Cool. Think I'll give this another look then, I always meant to stick with it originally but got distracted by other stuff.

Like I say there's a token hour or two of bullshit you have to get past but it's absolutely worth brute forcing that shit to get to the good freedom. IT could have changed since I last restarted but I don't think it has.

It wasn't. You still have to go through some motions - tutorial - but soon you are basically free to follow any of the story lines, aim straight for the center, build a base, focus on daily quests for materials, learn the languages, increase the size of your fleet. It's all very relaxing helped by the fact that most is explained. For example, if you need a certain resource that's only found of "Charred" planets you can pop by planet clusters at random hoping for a "Charred" planet, or you can highlight the resource in the Log and it'll show you what cluster has the resource.

It's all calm, relaxing and accessible.

Man, this update makes me so sad Visceral couldn't realise the ideas they had for Dead Space 4. I miss that franchise so much. :(

A Dead Space reboot seems like such an open goal, given the resurgence survival horror has seen this gen. EA have been fucking useless for the last seven years.

Hold on there. A reboot is cool if they take Dead Space 1 as the blueprint. I'm fine with additional coop, I'm fine with giving Isaac a voice. But it needs to have the tention of DS1.

DS2 and 3 were far too action oriented.

I tried the XB1X version out a couple of weeks ago and the frame-rate was pretty poor. It made me not want to play it again. I might try it on PS4 again now I have a Pro, but I was a bit disappointed that after so many patches the performance was that bad. Worse than I remember. There was a really unsightly pause every time I hopped into or out of my ship.

That doesn't sound right. The frame rate isn't amazing but it's generally stable. The pause in the ship sounds like it could be data streaming hitching or summat*.

*I literally know nothing but my default stance on these kind of hiccups is if it's on the external drive put it on the internal and vice versa .

I put about 200 hours into this years ago, but these days whenever I try to get back into it, I can never get the frame rate running smoothly. Whether I drastically reduce the settings or bump them up to ultra, it runs like a dog.* :(

If I jump to a random planet from the anomaly and it happens to be filled with huge building projects (I saw a Death Star once...) then the frame rate really tanks and and a crazy amount of pop-in occurs.

*wait, what's the simile? Dogs are damned fast.

Don't want to derail the thread too much, but I thought 2 had the perfect blend of horror, downtime and action. It was a more varied game than its also awesome predecessor. The solar arrray, the church, the trip through the school, returning to the USG Ishimura, man that was such a stellar game.
And the ideas for 4 sounded great as well. Especially this.

The ships you'd encounter was also a topic of interest for the team. Visceral did a fantastic job making the USG Ishimura a character in itself, and the team wanted to replicate this for the many space crafts you'd find. "The ships you would visit are where the game would get really diverse. The Ishimura had some inkling of that diversity with the variously themed decks. But imagine an entire roster of ship types, each with unique purposes, floor plans, and gameplay. Our original prototypes for the Dead Space 3 flotilla had some pretty wild setups that I wish we had been able to use."

It's a shame EA sucks so much. If Capcom can be profitable with Resident Evil games, they should've been able to make profitable Dead Space games. I'm hoping some dev makes a (spiritual) sequel next gen..

Did you try switching to performance mode on the X? It made a big difference to the framerate last time I played.

Yeah, I was on that which is why I was so disappointed! I'll try moving into the internal drive. It's not made a difference with any other game but it's a good idea.

I have had 80-100 hour playthroughs of NMS twice. The first time when it originally released in 2016, then again two years later with the "NEXT" update. It's now another two years later and I'm thinking about having another go. I have a couple of questions:

Do you think I should start a new game? I think a lot has changed again mechanically, which might make my last save file half broken and irrelevent. At the same time, I don't imagine much has changed with the Atlas/Artemis stuff which I wouldn't care to bother doing again, and I don't fancy doing all the grind again.

Next question, should I stick to PS4 Pro or get the PC version this time? I only have a GTX 1060. Is this a game that runs great on a midrange PC, or would it be no better than PS4 Pro?

I'm currently thinking of starting again. I think it looks great on pro, but there's probably limitations to builds? I'm not sure as don't have a PC.

I started again with the switch to VR, purely because I had to be walked through all the new control methods and so on. If I had a well established save and nothing fundamental was changing, I would keep it - purely to save as much grinding for units as possible. Even if you want to start fresh, you can dismantle and sell off all your old stuff and have a nice bank balance.

The universe is so massive you could warp one system over and never have to feel like you had been in that area before.

That's a pretty big issue with constantly updating a game. If you don't start over there'll be a nagging doubt that you won't experience things correctly, or something in your game might break. I restarted with the NEXT update (or whichever update introduced batteries...) because my base completely broke.

Have any of these other space games (Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen, etc) managed to convincingly simulate the descent from space onto the surface of a planet? I remember that being one of the main selling points when this originally released. Maybe it's my ageing PC, but it was never 100% convincing, with jarring LOD and messy artefacts. I'd really love to see that done flawlessly in the next gen.

I dunno my current play through is from the launch of the Xbox version and I think I've experienced everything they've added. I haven't built the minotaur yet, mind.

Also there's some quirks if you've got an 'old' save, like for some reason Helios doesn't have the free derelict coordinates but the scrap merchant sells them for 5m which at the begging is a not insignificant amount of money.

Maybe start one if it's been a very long time to see the streamlined stuff if you're out of practice then hop back into your old save.

Elite does it well but it only allows you to fly to airless worlds at the moment. No Man's Sky had improved a lot since launch though, adding better effects, clouds and stuff. It's not perfect but it's still really cool.
