No Man's Sky - Interceptor

As much as I'm loving the Survival settings, meaningful progress does feel like a long way off. I'm hoping the pace of making money and getting my hands on blueprints accelerates somewhat. I guess that's up to what I choose to do.

Currently I'm stocking up on Nanites to buy blueprints from space stations, which also requires my 'standing' with the merchant's race to be of a certain level, which is affected by answering questions correctly, finding specimens in shelters etc. When the game first released blueprints were quite easy to come by in shelters but now they seem to be restricted to a thing purchasable only with Nanites.

Stocking up on 1,000 emeril and flogging at all at a trading station seemed to double my money last night so I think I'll stick around at the next vaguely hospitable planet I find with a similarly-valued mineral and do a couple of runs.

All the while I need to make sure I'm stocked up on Plutonium to take off, Iron to charge up shields, and Thamium and Zinc to keep myself alive during EVA. Phew!

You might want to consider building a base soon. You can then build storage containers, and teleport to and from Space Stations.

Do you know how to scan for Habitable bases?

Yes, I did find a candidate for a base but I got the impression that I wasn't financially ready for that kind of commitment. I'm 38 and have only just bought my own home so claiming a whole planet seemed a little scary.

I've not found any missions yet. I assume just keep talking to aliens to see what crops up?

There's a mission vendor through the left hand door at every station, along with a teleporter to your base once you get one. :)

Yeah, given the plutonium use on liftoff, I'm going to build a base as soon as I'm on a vaguely not-awful planet. I think traversing in a vehicle will make a hell of a difference, too. One step at a time I guess, it didn't feel like an accomplishment in normal mode, it was easy to chew through the base building stuff if your character was advanced enough.

Does the torch drain battery? I'm so stingy with draining life support at the moment. At least until I can hold my own in space and mine loads of thanium roids.

Oh balls I've never turned left! I think v1.0 it was all Atlas Pass doors on the left so I'd been conditioned to avoid them.

I'll warn you now then, building a base doesn't give you a landing pad by default. You have to farm for the materials to build one of those, and on survival/permadeath that is a challenging proposition (uses a lot of what was once known as rigogen).

Aye true, I haven't even built a landing pad on my normal game yet. That said, you can at least teleport back and forth the station to flog any guff you grow. Avoids plutonium use and space pirates en route.

Damn, rigogen. That's going to be ball ache in survival mode, going to have to make sure I have a super easy life support replenish method figured out.

I hope they address the bugs soon. I'm starting to see more of those white waypoint dots in places that just seem random, like in the middle of a building. The question marks that don't disappear, the floating buildings. It's making me question whether other stuff is bugged or not. For example I've discovered another Atlas station thing but inside it is just a big eye type thing with a console I'm not able to interact with.

Don't get me wrong, it's still very playable and enjoyable but these things do stand out. I mean do I just scrap my base and look for another, or hope one day it will come back down to the ground

I saw a YouTube video where the guy simply used the terrain manipulator to create rock bridges right out to sea, from which he could reach the Kelp Sacs just under the surface. Pretty cool I thought!

Found out earlier that you can cycle targets in space combat by pressing left and right on the D-pad...

Yeah I've found that useful to know how many pirates are giving chase. It shows their shield but not how far away they are AFAIK.

Anyway, I had a blast with this last night. Did some new missions for my base Scientist, and did loads of ship to ship combat. This is more improved than I'd first realised. The difficulty seems to have been raised, the enemy ships seem more unpredictable and agile, and the ability to target ships is a great addition. I'm only using the cannons as I haven't got the blueprint for the new rocket launcher, but I can see this developing into a properly good dog-fighter. I had several long fights against four or five ships and at one point had Sentinel ships and pirates all follow me down to the planet's surface. So much fun.

I also boarded a freighter and noticed a Traveller alien just hanging around amongst the Korvax crew.

Finally I spent ages finding crashes ships but couldn't find one I liked. Eventually I bought a new 35 slot hauler having had this Blue Bug ship for ages. Hadn't realised you can now part exchange your old ship!  Nice note to end on - now to repair and upgrade it!

Why does the time to arrive at ? locations actually get further away from you despite using the boost when on planet,  I have had to warp up into space to use a momentary hyper-drive and jump back do to the planet to get near them.

I'm too scared to engage enemy ships in case I die but would like to get into it at some point. Any tips you can share would be much appreciated. I'm assuming my starter ship will get destroyed pretty quickly. Is there anyway of telling the 'strength' of enemy ships, or is it just down to numbers? I'm tempted by the fugitive ships as there's only one of them at a time but I'm worried it'll turn out to be super bastard hard or something and I won't even be able to turn tail.

Because they are on the other side of the planet / over the curve of the horizon. Dropping in vertically from space is much quicker unless it's a short hop.

They should add the ability to invite another player to your base or whatever though, so you can show off your swanky home. That needs to be in it.

With a virtual Kevin McLoud slagging it off behind your back.

@PobThey have a star rating, 1 to 3, which you can see once you've engaged/targeted them. The Phase Beam is the easiest weapon to use, but I find that boring, so I use the Plasma Cannons. Not tried the rockets yet.

You will definitely need to upgrade them though, unless you are carrying a massive stack of iron for your shields (btw, quick access for which is on the d-pad in case you hadnt realised).

Pump the fire fire button if you don't want to overheat the guns, but if you've got a good shot lined up it can be worth emptying your clip so to speak. You can avoid fire if you floor it and spin about. Fastest way to die is an enemy ship heading straight towards you with their Phase beam, so if that happens floor the boost and get out of their sights.
