Oh so it's best to obliterate the sentinels that are bothering you, rather than leg it? I thought it was like GTA and you get in more and more trouble.

You can leg it so that you're out of range (or hide in a building, or your ship) and they will deactivate. Or you can obliterate the ones that have spawned, and no more will come.

The only way to see matters escalate is to keep one of them alive, and in-range. If you look at one, you'll see a little meter filling up. Once it does, the next wanted level (in the top right of the screen) will rack up.

I only mention it, because it's another bizarre gameplay choice that means that you'll rarely see the full escalation of being wanted. Hardly anyone is likely to keep Sentinels active and in-range, unless deliberately.

As a bonus, if you take out the final wave of Sentinels at level 5, no more will spawn, and you can freely explore a planet. The downside is that the combat music stays on, but I usually mute the TV and play a podcast when that happens. It's the only way to safely explore lush/paradise planets on Survival mode, I've found.

I will try that Davros, I'll also start taking some more pictures. So much to see, so much to do.

I've just discovered you can warp back to your base from any space station

Unfortunately my base is now in midair. I had to jetpack up to the door

The photo mode is something else that wasn't in the game at launch of course, and it's a time sink waiting to happen for me.

In fact, back when the game was released you couldn't even toggle the HUD...

I use that a lot now, although it's a bit weird from an immersion point of view as it also spawns your ship at the base, or indeed the station. It's effectively a free jump as well as a teleport. I'm not really sure what else they could do without causing annoyance though.

I have to say I'm loving this now, to the point where I can't wait to get home from work to play more. It's a lot closer to the idea of the game I built in my head before it came out, and the Artemis path is doing a great job of adding some structure to the exploration. I wonder how the new Atlas path shapes up?

It does still feel a bit early access at times though, and I'd love there to be a bit more to the ship simulation side of things. I wouldn't expect something on the level of Elite: Dangerous, but it would be cool to have different types of ships with different speed, acceleration, handling and stuff. Right now they're all basically just a different skin with different amounts of slots and a class related bonus.

I'm going to look at reducing things on the HUD if I can now that I'm getting used to the game. I certainly don't need the bottom right mission info anymore. Also going to look at remapping flight controls if I can. Not sure it's possible on PS4 though.

Hang on, Artemis path, how do you choose that? I'm on the Atlas path but don't remember being given an option.

Going back to the warp function: my home planet, full of gold and copper, warp back to trading post and sell said gold. Almost feels like I'm abusing the feature.

Of course someone will tell me now you can build a trading station in your base. Can you?

I don't disagree, but on the flip side no other game has the sheer (inifinite) aesthetic variety of these ships, which makes looking out for a newer, sexier looking one constantly appealing. And I haven't even seen one of the new 'Exotic' types yet.

This is my current ship:

But I don't like the cockpit view, so I'm in the market for an upgrade. Also I still haven't bought a Freighter on this Save, and I understand you can now have multiple fighters once you do.

Indeed, but in theory you could still keep that level of variety. I guess you'd need some kind of restriction on what designs can have what stats though, just to avoid a big chunky hauler handling like an X-Wing. :)

I don't mind the grind now tbh, although I'm in no hurry. I'm eventually going to do massive trade runs once I've worked out some good routes. But would be handy having the terminal once I'm cash rich so can just buy things from it without having to travel.

Your ship looks awesome BTW.

Thanks. Have you seen these new 'Exotic' ones though? Drool...

You can't do this I'm afraid. It's all or nothing with the HUD.

I tweeted Hello Games about giving an option to swap the pitch and roll controls for flight to make it more like other flight games.

Ah OK, thanks. Yeah there should be alternative flight controls for those that want them, or like you say just swapping pitch and roll. HOTAS support would be the ideal.

Not yet, although everything's new to me at the moment so I'm not entirely sure.

Apparently you can buy a fighter?! The price though

Freighter. And yes, they cost a lot! I've got about 16 million and I can't seem to find one I like in that price range.

Again, originally the hangers of freighters were just blue lights you bounced off. You couldn't land on them or anything. Now you can walk about inside, and build a base there once you've bought one.

I've been onto a couple of freighters looking for missions or traders or anything, but there's always just acres of empty space and corridors and a despondent captain trying to flog his ship and all his crew. I love the idea that all these freighter captains are just drifting from system to system, waiting for the day a saviour will come and take the useless hulk off his hands. It makes you question the point of it all.

Well, there's slightly more to it than that - you sometimes get a distress call when a freighter is under attack. If you fight off the attacking ships you'll get invited to speak to the captain and get a reward.

Then, as mentioned, you can build a base on the freighter if you buy it. Once purchased you can also summon the freighter from the ground, which always looks cool at low altitude.

And apparently you can fill the hangar with multiple ships. Not sure how many. But in theory a fully developed freighter full of different ships and a base you've built could be really quite cool.

None of which takes away from the existential angst of course. :)

Oh, and I forgot to quote @Stanley earlier - the flotillas crashing out of warp right next to you are truly terrifying, especially on Permadeath mode! First time it happened I was thinking, oh fuck, this is it. I don't know what 'it' is, but this is it.

Freighters allow you to collect multiple ships (the only way unless they added another method with this patch).

This feature was invaluable for my trip to the galactic centre on permadeath - going through a black hole on that mode breaks multiple components on your ship, which usually meant many hours gathering resources to fix it just to be able to jump again. So I had one long range explorer craft ('Thunder Road') that could jump to the furthest possible black hole system, and then a flying trashcan ('the fridge')  that I would switch to when I got there and lob it through the black hole. On the other side summon the freighter, dock to switch back to the explorer and repeat.

Someone already commented on this but a lot of people are being impressed by things that have been in the game for over half a year already. Gamers are a fickle bunch. In another week or two I wonder how many will still be playing.

Isn't it frightening! Haha, I was playing with headphones on late last night and just didn't expect it.

Ha! Did the Sentinel ships turn up?

No. It was just a stray shot so I don't know if that had any bearing on whether things escalated or not. It was a shame because I'd just helped fight off a group of pirates for them and was making my way there to meet the captain and claim my reward.

Yeah but a lot of changes they've made are to ease newer players in more gently, such as streamlining the whole introduction of fixing your ship. Then there are changes which just make it more enjoyable overall, such as low flying, greater abundance of resources - particularly the more commonly used ones, and extending the time your health/life supports runs down. There are lots more but they all contribute towards a much more rounded game. Oh and it looks nicer too.
