Anyone aside from Danster played the Survival mode?  I'm interested in that, for sure.  If I can drag myself away from Planet Coaster this week I'll have a looksie and post up osme imptressions.  I'm not expecting a miracle though.

So far I've encountered a bug where returning to your base via ship from off word loads it in with just the original starting building and all the doors open - warping to the space station and back from said buggy base fixed it thankfully.

Also a big black space in the center of the screen when warping to a space station - not a problem other than looking shit.

Not being able to select building tools when outside of the base 'range' and forcing you to only see tech is rather annoying too, but I can see why they went with that since you can set up tech anywhere on a planet/moon.

I've just started this.  Got it for 18 quid which seems like a fair price

First impressions.

took me a while to realise I could pretty much walk up any slope.  Got lost in a big cave system but managed to find my way out.

My starting planet looked nice but was really devoid of life for something so lush.  Disappointing to not find anything weird and wonderful in caves in particular.

Quite like the strange Gek things lying around that reveal secrets.  Would like to see larger alien structures... I don't care if there's nothing to do in them.  I like exploring as long as the place I'm exploring is quite interesting to look at and be in.

Is there any water??? I seemed to be on a massive planet that had no bodies of water, which just felt odd.

It's very relaxing to play.

Every alien of the same type looks *identical* which is a bit off putting.

Yeah, you can infinitely jetpack against any surface. Its a solution to the problem of the random generation putting you in a huge ditch or something.

I felt similarly at first. The first large set of alien ruins I found was incredible.

When I found nigh on identical structures on several other planets? Not so much.

The aliens definitely don't all look identical, you fucking massive racist..!  (you'll notice the differences the more familiar you become with their features..)

How many planets in our solar system have bodies of water?  Makes you think...

which is fine if I'm on mars or something - I was on something with creatures running about, plant life everywhere and massive cave systems...

and not a drop of water anywhere.

MADE ME THINK

I only had time for a quick go tonight.

Things what I noticed.

-It looks a lot nicer with draw in being a lot less noticable. It seems to run more smoothly as well.

-You can scan planets on approach and it will tell you what minerals are most common on it. So if you're looking for gold in the system you're in you don't waste time on a planet covered in copper.

-The scanner actually shows you what minerals are nearby via letters instead of icons. No more jetting to where you think a zinc plant is only to find a dumb iron rock.

-You can stack some previously unstackables in your ship. Got three Dynamic Resonators taking up three slots in your backpack? Just transfer them over.

And that's without getting into the extra modes. It's amazing just how much they've done in nine weeks when everyone and his dog has been implying they've just been lolling around in a money bath.

It's no secret I loved the game before. But now it's getting closer to what other people wanted.

Funny thing is, they were working on this stuff before release, so a lot longer than 9 weeks, most of the time has been testing and bug fixing. With the rocky start, they doubled down to get it done and out before the end of the year while the next set of updates, additions and improvements should be out by next spring.

Fucking hell, really? It must have been utterly appalling before. It's not great now for draw in.

How many bells is a Freighter though?!

Freighters start out pretty cheap.  Think I paid about $7m for a 13-slotter. The inventory slots are twice the capacity of normal ship ones though. I assume the sizes then step up like with normal ships/multitools.

Whaaaat. I didn't notice this. Spent ages looking for a gold planet last night.

Even in 'normal' mode, survival is a bit of a challenge now. They've nerfed the jetpack, shielding needs platinum as well as iron and there are vastly fewer ship beacons dotted around.

Do the blueprints for the newly added stuff just drop at the normal places or do I need to research them in my base or something?

Looking forward to stacking 100s of Terumin in my freighter and expanding my intergalactic space crack empire.

Also, I don't know if I just had bad luck and had a run of ugly planets last night, but I suspect that planet generation has been made a bit more limited on PS4. Going from orbit to surface is much quicker now, but you can see naff looking tiled textures everywhere. I seemed to be getting a lot more glitches and spiky polygons where it all felt very organic before. Also was getting some very blurry looking Geks, so maybe it's a texture streaming bug.

Quite the opposite, if the patch notes are to be believed:

Generation

  • Added biome specific plants
  • Adopted new method of distributing resource plants on terrain, for more lifelike clumps of plants
  • Improved distribution of plant life across all terrain types
  • Introduced visual differentiation of red, green and blue star systems
  • Introduced new mineable terrain resources found only in red, green and blue star systems
  • Reduced average building frequency
  • Introduced planets with elevated building density
  • Introduced planets with no buildings or sentient life
  • Increased the proportion of lush and tropical planets
  • Decreased the proportion of lifeless planets
  • Fixed bug where multiple ships could appear, overlapping, at the player's start scene
  • Prevented certain building types being incorrectly placed underwater
  • Prevented multiple buildings occasionally being placed in overlapping positions
  • Prevented buildings occasionally being placed intersecting with the terrain

  • Introduced more varied and vibrant colouring to terrain for each biome
  • Decreased frequency of brown terrain colour selections
  • Changed texture scales to improve transition between terrain lods
  • Improved terrain colour combinations to add variety and better match terrain contouring

...that you've got a game with abundant life everywhere that's entirely unrealistic while you're breaking the laws of physics and of course you are because it's a game about escapism and...you are concerned about the realism when compared to our solar system which as far as we know is anything but the norm.

Yeah you're right, makes you think.
