What is the appeal of building a base on one planet when the aim of the game is to travel to the centre? Or has the aim changed?

Another way to play is to stay put, looking at those notes. Hence separate saves, I imagine.

Building a base next to a rare spawn would be handy, too.

Okay, survival mode impressions... Well, my nearest ship is 15mins away, there's very little plutonium, a tiny bit a thalium, no zinc so far, some stuff I can't break without a better laser, few caves and I'm on an extremely cold planet.

Have already died

All good so far :)

Found a nice moon to start base building on...so far it's all looking a little too biscuit barrel - need to get some glass so I can put some windows in. The little gimp builder living in that thing keeps sending me on fetch quests presumably to unlock more materials. Was disappointed to see no landing pad available on the creative option materials list, but then I guess it would be a pain moving you ship about if you wanted to restructure your base. That said the Golden Condor is parked right up against one of those barrels so hope I can take off...

Your base has a portal in it and all space stations now also have a portal room (left stairs rather than the usual right), once you travel from station to base the pathway is linked. Doesn't hamper progress to the centre, other than the time wasted roleplaying as space Kevin McCloud.

I've reached my ship, but still have no zinc, this is going to be hard. I can get about 3 mins away during the day, but my scanner has naff all range and takes forever to power back up. Guess I'm just gonna have to go cave hopping until I find some.

Do the guardians drop zinc?

Can't help thinking it's going to bring content that's as shallow as the main game.

I don't really blame them.

Planets being boring is hard to fix. It seems relatively easy to make some devoid of life, let you build a little house and give you more inventory storage (seems the need for the freighter could be largely obviated by just making the ship inventory less annoying in general).

Making planets that look anything like what was shown in the trailers? That's hard, and it's not something I can see coming.

This survival game I've started is going nowhere, just can't find any Zinc. Tried feeding animals, fighting the guardians (who are a bit tough I must say) and trawling around the area my ship is in. Nothing. Can't think of anything else I can do.

Been out all weekend but I'll be all over this asap. It may not be focusing on the areas I'd want them to, but it proves they care about the game in the long term.

Exactly. I was worried this update would never actually come out.  I'm starting to think they forced Sean Murray into silence since he kept putting his foot in his mouth, and that explains why they've been silent.  They'd rather let the content speak for them instead of accidentally promising more than they can deliver.

So it's nice to see they still care about their game.  I honestly expected this to be a foundation for the coding that would eventually go into these features like base building.  I didn't think they'd release all of this today.  It's a good sign of things to come hopefully.

On first inspection you'd sort of think they thought "You can build on Minecraft (and other games) and people love it, so let's also do that!"

Except the exact point of building on Minecraft is first and foremost...for shelter. You absolutely need to. And then you expand. And hoard stuff. And enjoy the world.

The planets will always be transient here because of the aim of the game. You're meant to leave them behind. So from a design perspective you need the bases for something else...and there CAN be that, except at the moment there isn't. If they are going towards what is possible then bravo.

However right now it seems like more icing on the icing.

So you can teleport back to your base from ANY station, according to an article on VG247. That's very different, I assumed within-system teleportation from the notes. Bodes well for longevity, if this is their approach.

edit - and permanent way points, so you won't lose stuff. I haven't tried it yet, but the more I read, the more it sounds like the game that should have shipped. Like Driveclub.

So wait, what about the reverse? Can you teleport from your base back to any station you've visited? That would be amazing.  Or is it just back to the last station you visited?

Put a couple of hours into this last night. First impressions are tentatively positive. I'm still doing the tutorial stuff, so it's nagging me to do things constantly, but once it eases off with that I can see it getting better and better.

Visited three planets so far, and they've all been really similar in terms of flora and fauna. Even the one that's apparently barren has had the same tentacle plants as the two lush ones. I'm hoping that's because they're all in the same system though.

Those flying robot police (guardians?) are a massive irritant though. I can already tell that I'm going to consider them a design misstep unless there's an incredibly compelling story reason to have them getting pissed off with me just for picking fruit and blasting a few rocks. And they're everywhere.

Frame rate has been fine for me but perhaps it's really variable and I just haven't noticed the issue. Draw distance and pop in are appalling though, and even when I'm stood still, if I rotate on the spot, shadows and textures on things really close to me pop in and change jerkily.

All I ever wanted from this game was a galactic Endless Ocean  and so far it's 50/50 as to whether that's what I'll get. Definitely want to keep playing though.
