If anyone is still achievement hunting and you want an easy way to take down other ships hanging around a trading post makes it quick because

-lots of ships come in (obv)

better still

-you can do strafing runs and take out ships on the landing pads!

You can take down 50-odd ships in a single space battle. I went from milestone 6 to 10 in one fight, took maybe 5 minutes.

Completed the Atlas Path & watched

Spoiler

a youtube video on the very poor ending. I'm done with it for now, not quite sure what new features or gameplay elements hello games will add if any?

I hope that the silence is because they are working on an exciting update with which they can win back a lot of goodwill. Perhaps something to coincide with the Pro launch. I have a sneaky suspicion that NMS in VR was one of the driving factors for Sony creating the Pro, but that's probably just wishful thinking. The new machine will certainly need a flagship title to show off what it can do, but those heady days of NMS super-hype have long gone and I wonder if the title is deemed too toxic now. (Toxic planets are my favourite btw. :P)

I can't believe that they have simply stuck their head in the sand and will just move on to something new without some attempt to redeem their reputation.

About predators; I was on a world with giant horned tigers who crept up on me really slowly before striking - they don't all do mad attacks. The little crab things often are aggressive and usually give themselves away with that clicking noise, but they aren't all like that. And actually I've never seen a crab thing attacking another animal, but I have seen giant bipedal rhino-raptors kicking the corpses of small fox like creatures around for sport.

About the extreme trophy, starting over again is going to take exactly as long as just doing it in your current save.

The problem is not that the clock is stuck, it's that it's only telling you your maximum consecutive hours, and you haven't gone past that number yet so it's not ticking up. You'll have to do the same amount of time regardless of which save you use. Any extreme conditions count, even hostile sentinels, but I got mine on an extreme cold planet. DON'T leave it unattended, you will die when life support drains, respawn out of shelter, die again, lose your entire inventory, and reset the extreme survival clock again. I made that mistake. My clocked jammed on milestone 9 out of 10, so I spent the best part of a week on that planet - scanned a bunch of landmarks, took off, landed on the other side of the planet and set off on a walk back to where I started. I actually made it all the way there and had started going back to my ship again before the clock started counting. It was an epic journey, and so satisfying when the final milestone got checked off.

I would actually dispute that going into space screws it up, I think it might be warping, because my counter went up over several different planets in the same system. Best not take chances though.

I got back into this last weekend and I've played it nearly every day since, some evenings for hours on end. I find it amazingly relaxing to just pootle around finding things. I don't like it when I get attached by space pirates who blow me up every single time though.

So what's the best way of getting a better ship that will allow me to lay waste to all who dare disturb my chillaxing? Or does that sort of happen naturally as you progress?

First thing is that if you get the warning about incoming ships, stop immediately and try and see where they're going to warp in (the little pulsing circle). Often you can then shoot the shit out of them while they're all bunched together.

Otherwise just upgrade your guns and shield, and always carry plenty of Iron or Titanium to recharge your shields.

Hit reverse gear and use the beam laser. Much easier to dogfight that way.

I've a friend who plays this who tells me that he upgraded his exosuit to hold more than his ship can. Which is super unreal.

Basically this is an arcade game, where you collect stuff to level up and shoot baddies.

At it's core level is it just that? An arcade game with nice clothes.

The exosuit thing almost seems...lazy. Just allow the player to get more and more of the same stuff to continue to level up? It's pretty basic, right?

The ship inventory slots can hold double the amount of stackable resources that the exosuit can so there is that.

I think they should make ship slots quadruple that of the exosuit (1,000 per slot). That would be more realistic and still keep cargo management challenging.

You don't need a better ship, just head for the nearest planet, land, and get out of your ship.

Yep it defo seems like it was at one point going ot be a survival / pretty hardcore game, before they basically removed anything difficult / roguelike.

It is, but I find the beam really boring to use. Whenever I get a new ship I always dismantle all beam components and re-use the materials.

Reverse with the other gun is just as effective.  Love that AI!

I want more interesting mechanics really.   Stuff that's barely there - combat, trading, interacting with wildlife, all the 'what you do'  can be improved massively.

I know they're still working on it so I'm optimistic.  I think the silence is down to them wanting to have a big update when they finally face the community/media.
