I was genuinely interested if people thought some constructed planets, that were home to specific set pieces, colonies, civilisations, interspersed amongst the procedurally generated ones, would have worked. Because that's how I would've approached the problem of limited procedural variables, I thought it would've been a good idea. That's why I asked the question to people playing the game, from a game design point of view.

I think dropping in scripted space battles, ground encounters and structures would be cool, but they'd need to be scarce enough so that they still had the sense of mystery. A whole planet of scripted content would go against the spirit of the game for me.

Some old school roguelikes would occasionally drop in pre built levels or sections of levels and you instantly new you were facing something special, but that was just a tile map of ASCII symbols dropped in the middle of procedurally generated level. There wasn't much in the way of development time or costs like there would be to create scripted content for a game like NMS.

Haha some bloke on twitter is not happy!

That dude is super angry that there are no wars in No Man's Sky, like Sean Murray promised. I clearly remember the preview videos concentrating on all the wars we were going to get in NMS - the endless, procedurally generated future wars - so Murray has some serious questions to answer about the lack of wars in the final product.

I had a tiny little carnivore chase me while I was trying to recharge my weapons, and when I jetpacked up onto a rock to escape, it went after a giant giraffe thing instead, chasing it all over the place.

But apparently I imagined it because that doesn't happen.

I imagined it too, clearly.

That's a totally excellent review deKay! and it also lines up with my impressions of the game.

I really, really like the game and it's pretty much what I had expected... I've just not sunk quite enough time into it yet.

One thing that will be a guaranteed result from all this pitchfork waving, mudslinging witch hunt that the internet seems to revel in is that no games with this level of ambition will be made ever again. No Man's Sky shoots big and might not complete hit every target, but why ever take risks if it's met with such distaste. Cod clones all round then!

What if the wars were created... by pitting half the people who bought the game and hated it against the other half who didn't? And that was the plan all along?

Makes you think.

Unfortunately, the AI for one faction is not as advanced as we would like.

I think it's stupid that those tiny crab things (always the same tiny crab things, too, pretty much) just chase anything.  It's hardly predator behaviour, which is something I would've loved to see!
