No Man's Sky - Interceptor

I think upgrading your ship via the crash site method, even if it's only one or two slots at a time, is more interesting than farming and grinding to get the units to simply buy a new one at a space station. Part of me thinks they should have ditched the buying a spaceship thing altogether, or at least had "spaceship showrooms" that aren't in every system. Just occasionally you come across one.

I like being able to pick a ship based on its looks though, rather than just the number of slots.

Still, no reason why I can't also save up some cash at the same time.

Yep same here, if I did not like the look of a crashed ship I would just leave it & move onto the next marker.

The materials needed for fixing up are readily available on every planet.

All you need to do the bear minimum (launch thruster and pulse drive) is like heredium, iron, carbon and maybe some plutonium (been a while so memory is hazy).

The ships you find will have similar gear (if not slightly better) than what you already have. I recommend fixing up the minimum to fly about (Mute sound is good to ignore the horrible shield warning noise) and only destroy components in current  ship when you are about to take a new one (ie on the screen where you compare ships.  Move anything you can into your suit inventory beforehand to make sure you have enough space for everything. The mass deconstruction of upgrades will also bug out and let you stack items like gravitino balls etc.

I found after hopping around crash sites, I not only had all upgrades for free in my final ship, I easily had enough resources to completely fix everything before leaving.  Another brilliant gameplay system.

Finally picked up the Platinum Trophy for this last night, it felt like an AGE to find that last animal.

It's staying installed and I'm going to make my way to the centre now, after that it'll be checked every content update. I'm getting a Pro and sure this'll be improved in every way with that extra power.

concerning patch 1.09 the only thing i've noticed is when uploading discoveries you could hold the button down and glide over each image to upload where as now you have to press the button every time...

Noticed this too!

Also, I got a Milestone for Gek Reputation of 100 last night. Is that new? I don't recall ever getting one with the Vy'keen, even though they basically worship me as their god.

Dunno. It just popped up "Korvax Standing:60" as a Journey Milestone.

It's almost like they forgot to add these on the milestones list, I had one pop up about the Gex I think last time I played.

I could see where it was going.

You need this so look for that and that, over and over........

But each thing takes longer to reap the items needed for it. I can see the attraction for people who love grinding games, I grow tiresome of it quickly.

It's not so much looking for things over and over, it's looking at things over and over - I think that's where the question of longevity is settled. You have to like the idea of an effectively limitless planet generator, and be comfortable with spending full price money on an interactive tech demo with a disproportionately limited game attached. I haven't managed to get back into it yet (I've gotten back into Spelunky instead), but I have no regrets about buying NMS. I've had my money's worth of wonder out of it, there's a good chance I'll come back to it refreshed, and I've done my bit to balance out the legion of sad sacks frothing at the mouth because none of the moons are on sticks.

Yeah, I definitely got my moneys worth and look forward to starting afresh if/when they rebalance the game and add new stuff to do (factions or whatever). I had a brief play yesterday and found myself marveling at the world but with nothing to do. I think the greatest trick HG could pull with this is making it VR compatible. That sense of wonder would smack you in the face all over again.

I don't know if I'd fancy it in VR as it stands, with the texture and detail pop-in while flying around. I guess that could be addressed on the PC version. In theory, though, yeah - jetpack hopping over the surface would be pretty incredible, done right.

I still feel like I have enough things to do in the game. For example, I'm only just getting into space battles now that I have upgraded cannons. Doubtless the limitations will present themselves before long, but at the moment the dogfights can be quite spectacular.

If they introduce proper battle mechanics, a la X-Wing or something (and I can't see why they couldn't), the space combat could be reason enough to play the game in future.

It wouldn't take much to flesh out the combat. I mentioned earlier on that just bringing it up to the level of 8-bit Elite would be a start - missiles, EMPs and weapon upgrades. Obviously there's a wealth of possibilities beyond that, but I think you're right in assuming you'll tire of the current dogfights soon enough - there's no tactical element, you just need to get them roughly in front of you and fire, and occasionally take a panicky dip into the menus to charge up your shield.

At the moment, when I get a scanning notification, I just sigh - I know I'll get through it, it's just going to be a chore. The rewards won't be worth picking up and I won't have to use my wits. What I want is to get that notification and think YES! Let's see who I'm up against and what they've got, and maybe I can try out these new toys I just bought. Fire an EMP beam into one enemy so they lose their steering controls and plough into an asteroid. Switch back to the lasers, watch the radar and use the d-pad to divert full shield power to the right-hand side, lure whoever's shooting you from there to tail you as you drop a cluster of mines. Wheel back to the asteroid field and fly into it at full speed in the hope that a few of the missiles chasing you might hit them, send out a distress call to the nearby space station as you check whether you have enough energy to deploy your cloaking device - ah, now, what was I saying about moons and sticks earlier today?
