Yeah, I've moved on after getting a new 26 slot ship and upgrading my Exo Suit to 32 slots. I've only just reached the first Atlas monument.

 

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thinking about warping back to Emeril Hills though. All that lovely Emeril...

Ah, ok then. If they're so expensive to buy  as well (cheers @Mike1812) then I'll just free up the inventory space and YouTube it.

I did the same. Not sure if I want to sell them or hang on and find another one. I don't really need the cash, but can you buy the stones? Or craft them?

So, I keep losing my ability to follow the Atlas path, after each time I start the game up. Any quick way to re-enable that, apart from finding Thing 1 and 2 at a space anomaly? It's sapping my enthusiasm to play, in honesty.

Literally what I did. After a bit of moping i got over it and am enjoying pootling toward the centre as normal.

 

Gave up on a planet i just couldn't find the last 2 animals on so decided to jump to a different system. Chose a large white star and landed on a really, REALLY lush planet. Green grass everywhere, clear blue water, chock full of massive flying fish-things and land animals that look really convincing too. Prone to the odd storm but its just a normal storm so no having to recharge shields all the bloody time.

I assume that these people are just constantly warping to the next solar system in pursuit of that elusive centre...

I managed to retain all 10 stones by the time i'd reached the end.

Whichever option you choose yields the exact same outcome so I wouldn't worry too much.

Yeah, I've stopped naming stuff. There's not enough to keep you on a planet, so the only person who cares is the person at HG mining stats for a suit at Sony.

Two more planets tonight with unfindable final creatures, and on both I found all bar the last one in under ten minutes, but over an hour later the last one remains elusive.

Someone's worked it out for the hyperdrive upgrades since full jump distance is measurable. It's not a huge buff though, but every little counts for some people.

 

I've really loved this game, and as I stated a few pages ago - I bought a PS4 just to play it (already had an Xbone). This game cost me £269 and I don't regret it! I've probably played for 30-40 hours I think. As an Elite player in 1988-9 this certainly took me back, and a lot of the design choices I actually like about it (e.g. no low flying, auto-landing, the text descriptions of events) are the very things that have other people boiling over with rage and demanding refunds. I feel really sorry for Hello Games having made such a great game and then to have watched the monumental sales only to have this refund fiasco ruin their takings retrospectively. I suspect big publishers will not let actual developers publicly promote a title ever again for fear of similar damage to the profits. People are really slagging HG off for the bugs (my PS4 hasn't crashed at all) despite that all the major games' launches are shitfests these days, and those studios have hundreds of staff. HG has fixed a lot of the issues in a pretty timely fashion. Recall for instance that BattleField 4 still wipes campaign mode saves pretty much each time you turn your Xbox off. EA couldn't be bothered to fix that after taking everyone's £50.

Anyway, if anyone from Hello Games reads this I think you guys really hit the mark. The every-frame-worthy-of-a-screenshot art, the inspired musical sound track, the sound design itself (in particular the suit voice which harks back to Half-Life's HEV, the clunking starship engine and roll thrusters), the crafting, the 'feel' of the universe - are all really special. I like spotting the stylistic cues the game has taken from particular films for instance. It certainly panders to the way I like to play open world games. I like to just inhabit the world. I'll often load up GTA V and head to the airport, steal a plane and just spend half an hour flying over the landscape. I'm not compelled by the COD-style on-rails instructions of modern games. Go to the facility, kill the man, steal the tank etc. I like the occasional mistake in NMS that leads you being stranded and suddenly having no choice but to scout the planet on foot. Once I was in the process of switching to a crashed ship I found and was breaking down the tech in the old one for salvage. A friend phone me and while I talked my PS4 timed out in the menu and powered off. When I resumed my game the crashed ship was gone and I only had the wrecked one I had broken down - cue several hours of resource foraging and a big relief when I finally took off again.

 

Having watched all the interviews Sean Murray gave in the run-up to the launch I could tell from the way he described it that NMS was likely to be precisely my type of game. It really irritated me to see YouTubers rip into the 'lies' that were sold claiming certain things which even I had already seen after a few days' play were not in the game, when patently they were - the 'reviewer' just hadn't happened to encounter them yet. Admittedly Sean had given some evasive answers in those interviews but he is a developer and studio head not a PR guy, and he admitted several times to finding the press stuff awkward. I think in most cases he just seemed genuinely to be trying not to spoil the game - particularly in the notorious Game Informer clip where the guy asked him 70 quickfire direct questions. Incredibly I had seen my first other player-named system on the first day but some people had initially claimed even that feature was a lie. Did people shit on Destiny for not being exactly like in the live action TV commercials for instance? Maybe. Did they all get their money back after 20+ hours of play? No, of course not because none of them could. I'm actually surprised that these refunds were offered for NMS outside usual conditions. Let it not be forgotten that Sean Murray had to endure death threats when the release was delayed. I mean really.

 

As for my progress in the game - I've slowed down a bit as I'm losing gear-upgrade purpose. I'm up to a 27 slot ship and I have all the warp upgrades so I can jump pretty far, and my guns are good enough to fend off typical attacks. I have enough inventory slots that I usually have stocks of the commonly needed materials. Black holes now result in only a little further of a jump than a fully loaded warp drive, which avoids that inevitable equipment damage so I'm inclined to warp only from now on. I mainly upgraded to get to the other spectral types of star but really I'm not yet aware of any palpable difference. So far rare stuff seems no more forthcoming on these systems, but my sample size is still quite small. One gripe is that the truly rare elements' value is not linked to how rare they actually are, and there seems to be bugger all market variability between systems. I remember the good old days of the simple Lave to Zaonce trading route in Elite moving furs and computers back and forth between those two high and low tech systems in the same sector. Somehow though I don't think I'll remember NMS planet names in another 20 years though - they're all too disposable on the long march to the galactic core.

 

I'd recommend the /r/nomansskythegame subreddit now the hate has died down, which has got some interesting ideas about the lore of the game and what it all adds up to, plus there's another subreddit of people trying to crack the mystery of the portals which is amusing just to witness the contributors' dogged persistence.

I'm now at over 14 hours on my current planet and still no sign of the final creature. I really don't think it exists at this point.

15 planets and three systems last night in search trees and grass. No joy but I did find a great planet with lovely skies and full of fauna; sat on a mountain watching the ships go over. Then moved on and made a few venom sac runs. 

 

There are no walker sentinels in my game. Every time I shoot the elite sentinel party - one dog sentinel and his 2 flying mates, the wanted drops back down to nothing.

Killing them is exactly what stops the next wave coming (or running out of range). You need to keep them aggro'd and keep doing naughty stuff.

 

edit: Specifically you need to let the little circle above a Sentinel's life bar fill up...

Hello I've played for about 80 hours and haven't named a thing. They already have names, who am I to turn up and change that?

 

The times I've struggled to find the final creature it's always been some bastard jellyfish that only turned up in some lakes. I hunted for hours for the last one on a barren planet with no joy and am convinced it's that jellyfish again but with no water to spawn in.

I've jumped about 200 times, so been through tonnes of systems that I haven't visited any planets in. I named all the systems though, although I'm just calling everything "Psyduck" at the moment.

The sort of people who whined that Sean Murray had 'promised' them stuff that wasn't in the game petitioned Steam so hard they caved in and allowed refunds regardless of playtime. Apparently even Sony buckled too and allowed PS4 players refunds (presumably in the PSN store). Plenty of people on Reddit admitted to having played for over 100 hours and still got their money back. Some former Sony executive Tweeted that was tantamount to theft and there was a big ole Internet ruckus. Recall, the only evidence these people had was stuff like:

 

-(Interviewer) Can you play this with other people?

-(Sean Murray)<pauses> Erm Yes. But it's not that type of game.

 

From about 2014 I think:

-Here's a space battle, you can join in, you can take sides.

 

Apparently according to the disgruntled the first answer is a contractual engagement to provide a multiplayer environment. Sean is probably thinking that the server-side discovery cataloguing makes it arguably sort of multiplayer, and you can certainly socially play it with other people comparing discoveries and the like. Lots of Redditors have found that it's a great game to play with their young kids for example.

 

The second answer apparently 'entitles' people to expect a full faction mechanic within the game which isn't really there. Some reviewers like AngryJoe on Youtube literally claimed space battles never occur (I have had quite a few - they're the distress signal things). Now you can indeed take sides. Help the pirates blow up the cargo ship, or fend them off. Admittedly it doesn't really impact the game besides subtly affecting your standing with the three alien races, but yeah let's all demand our money back. I wouldn't be surprised if Sean Murray decides to go get a job as a developer for a bank after finding out just how awful so much of the buying public actually are.

 

There were some other things that riled people - apparently he had in some press interviews mentioned that the planets' rotation was modelled which turned out not to be the case (HG since claimed playtesters found that confusing), but really there aren't huge differences between what was shown off and the finished game.

 

At least the obnoxious haters now have their refunds so what's left is a core of people who actually like the game.

I've only named systems and planets. But I've scanned everything because you get money and stuff - the guy who had been on the planets before me hadn't bothered.

Steam didn't 'cave', you can get non automated refunds regardless of playtime on any game. Once you've got a refund that way you'll have trouble with their support if you try to do it on another game though.
