No Man's Sky - Interceptor

The last two nights I've played, my game has forgotten I'm following the Atlas path, so the option doesn't appear my galaxy map. By pure chance, I jumped one system yesterday, into a system discovered by someone else, and there was an anomaly that got me back on track. Tonight? Nothing. Several jumps (having finally discovered you don't need to go one star at a time, but can in fact jump 300ly unless it arbitrarily decides I can't because of the star classification), no sign of anomaly. System scan shows an ore deposit, so i land and there's the biggest spire of iridium ore I've ever seen. Start mining it, a few minutes later I fell through the floor, while perfectly motionless mining. The core of this world was water, and I thought it was going to let me back up. Alas, I couldn't fly up through the surface, though I could see animals walking on this invisible layer. I took a video, it's fucking ridiculous.

Honestly, I was about to turn it off, probably for a long time, standard functionality is stable, nevermind what's missing from the game, when I end up spending an hour walking around the surface because the local animals are so interesting. Sizeable, multi generation herds following each other around. It was quite impressive.

This sodding game. I really do want to get back on the Atlas though, god knows when that'll turn back up. The Atlas path was always in the opposite direction to the galactic center, for me.

So the Atlas path is nothing to do with getting to the centre?

If it's not where does the impetus come from to get to the centre?

I've broken away from the path thinking black holes would get me to the centre quicker but there's 2 goals?

Picked up a 40 slot ship and only now after over a week just got all the warp drives equipped on it.

I've got the next 3 days off work so aim to get this platinum'd then race to the centre, the platinum seems really achievable, just a little grindy. After that it'll be a dip in and out game, can't wait to see how it develops with future content updates.

Nope, galactic path is yellow, the Atlas path (to the nearest Atlas anomaly) is blue, and as best I can tell from the poor map is in the opposite direction.

No grenades, but I managed to worm my way out. Lesson learned.

What's the general vibe on this game here then? I'm only a handful of hours in, but I'm fucking loving it so far. It's really got its hooks into me. Seems like a pretty sad, embittered person not to appreciate the atmosphere, craft, ambition and love on display here. It's a very charming and unusual game.

Spent a bit of time underwater & finally found some underwater creatures, lots of them. The one change I wish Hello Games implements is the automatic recharging of the breathing equipment if you have shielding plates in your inventory. They have been a bit quiet lately on twitter so hopefully they are busy working on some new features.

Just started playing this at the weekend on PS4, after successfully avoiding basically everything about it for the last few years. Really all I knew about it was that it had procedurally-generated planets and that you could fly from space down to land anywhere and walk around.

It hooked me in straight away and I'm totally in love with it. Obviously it's not perfect but it's damn close.

I think back to the hundreds of hours I spent playing Elite and Frontier as a teenager, and I marvel at how far we've come. This scratches the same itch and more besides.

People are such dicks about it though. My girlfriend posted the box on Facebook after she bought it, and the first comment was "I'm trying to get a refund because of false advertising."

I agree. Ignore them and enjoy the game. The hysteria is really weird. I absorbed every online article and video going for two years leading up to its release and I don't feel cheated into purchasing it in the slightest.

On a slightly separate note does anybody else happily rationalise the simple auto-landing to themselves?  We have self driving and parking cars now, so in the future I'll be damned if I have to actually manually land my space ship when it can do it for me!

Ha, I actually hadn't given it the slightest thought. I guess I've completely internalised the concept of autonomous vehicles already :D

Reminds me of a flight I took for a work trip about ten years ago. The plane lands and as we're taxiing up to the gate, the captain comes on the radio and says "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm required to inform you that was a completely automated, hands-free landing."

Lots of people were upset about this, for some reason that I still can't fully understand. I want my aircraft to be able to land itself!

Even though some other games have come out in the meantime (Deus Ex, Grow Up), I keep finding myself drawn back into this.  I put on a Podcast, & then just get on with exploring, collecting & building as I wind my towards the Center of the Galaxy.

I have maxed out suit slots, so that has the dual advantage of allowing me to carry more stuff for crafting/selling & no longer draining my wallet at the suit upgrade stations, & my Multi Tool is also pretty maxed for mining, with beam coolant/focus/intensity/combat upgrades all stacked up on each other.

The ship is causing me some trouble however.  I keep an eye out for Distress Signals, but the last couple of ships I've found have all been one slot less rather than one slot more.  I can cope with having to rebuild my technology each time I switch, but I won't switch to a ship with less slots, no matter how cool it looks.

Oh, And I got to the end of the Atlas Path.

Huh.

Oh well, at least I don't have to lug those stones around any more.

I found a planet that is covered in spires and giant mounds of Emeril. I've been mining so much of it that the game has taken on a philosophical aspect regarding the nature of greed and at what point you decide you have enough.

For the longest time I felt like this guy though.

I found a planet pretty early in my explorations that had caves with loads of Gravitino Balls.  I would stuff my suit with them & then use my upgraded Stamina & Jetpack to leg it back to my ship & take off before the Sentinel response could really kick in.  After doing that a few times though, I decided I wasn't going to play that way.  Now I just wander & explore the Galaxy, & I take what I find along the way to the Trading Stations, which is usually Heridium, Gold or occasionally, Emeril.

Not that i'd be adverse to the occasional find of Pearls of something, just that i won't stick around to suck it dry.  I'll just take what I can carry, & off to my next destination.

After ~12 hours play, I still don't have the schematics for Warp Cells. I've just been pooling about, finding Monoliths and learning Korvax. Luckily, there are four resource- and fauna-rich planets and a few decent moons to keep me going for at least another 12 hours, while I begin to search for Colonial Outposts and, hopefully, the recipe for anti-matter.

I'm really enjoying pootling around, exploring, logging and mining so any extra gameplay features will be a nice bonus, rather than something I'm expecting.

I think I've messed up. Reached the end of The Atlas Path but only have 9 Atlas Stones...

Let me reassure you that if you don't give over the ten thingies, you're not missing much. Just getting to that point in the quest u locks something much more useful.  If you want more info, ask :)
