No Man's Sky - Interceptor

Firstly I don't feel disappointed at all. That might be because I made a decision many years ago to stop reading/viewing previews. (Just after I played though Bioshock Infinite and coming away disappointed to the game I played and the game the trailers suggested I'd be playing.) So my only exposure to the hype was some screenshots a few years ago and then Davro's first impressions.

 

And it was Davro's posts that made me imagine what the game might be. And what I got was exactly what I wanted. Nothing too complicated, just a more freeform higher fidelity version of the experiences I had had playing Mercenary (C64), Captain Blood (C64), Koronis Rift (C64), Damocles (Amiga) and the Mako sections from Mass Effect (PC/360).

 

And it's delivered in spades for me. I bought the digital copy because it was small and because I suspected that once I'd sussed out the shallowness of it I'd still want quick access to it to use as a weird sort of screensaver/create your own sci fi book cover thing.

 

I can totally understand why some people are disappointed. It's totally understandable if you've been following it from day one. Or if you've built it up (with Sony's help) as the last game you'll ever buy. Or if you expected more combat.

 

As for me, I'm happy that I get to play a game/experience that weirdly seems to be made just for me. It doesn't demand that I "get gud or go home." It doesn't say "you get to wander around these environments but the price of entry is you need to stab/shoot something in the face every five minutes." It is what I want it to be. It can be a fight for survival on a harsh planet if I feel the need for it or it can be a serene flight over an alien landscape or it can allow me to watch weird animals from a distance. I get the sense of discovery I got from Captain Blood and the sense of free flight I used to get from Magic Carpet.

 

I can't wait to see what modders will do with this. A total conversion of Damolcles? Or Rescue on Fractalus/Behind Jaggi Lines? Or some bizarre survival horror thing limited to one planet?

 

And maybe the creaotrs will change the game. Put more modes in. Make it more challenging. But if they do I hope they keep the current mode somewhere, maybe as a "chill" mode.

 

Game of the year? I don't know. Definately experience of the year for me.

That pretty much sums it up for me. It may not excite many, but that sense of being on your own in a vast universe, discovering stuff, it has it in bucketloads. Maybe it's us oldies who played games like Mercenary and the original Elite that get the feel of this game.

Pretty early on, you can figure the parameters within which the algorithm will create a new world, but it still manages to surprise on occasion. Like, yesterday afternoon, I found a planet covered with huge, cuboid structures, shrouded in toxic rain, covered in moss and linked by what looked like vast pipes or tentacles. It looked amazing – like the remains of some aeons-old planet-scale manufacturing facility, which my imagination immediately decided was what it actually was.

 

I haven’t found a normal planet yet – despite the fact that the planets all look kind of similar, every one I’ve landed on to date has had some unique, memorable feature.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I know the Metroid Prime games are heavily structured where you only get a new tool when the game says so, and then you have to go back to the place you couldn't reach before and all that, but just imagine an open-universe Metroid with worlds like NMS but with cool gear, exciting combat and so on.

 

On the other hand, the feeling I got when I arrived in Phenandra Drifts in Prime 1 is probably the stand out moment for me in the Metroid games, and those feelings are what NMS delivers in spades.

So I just watched this, a compilation of all the trailers as of last summer..  I'd not seen any of them before aside from the famous e3 2014 one. 

 

Some of the planet types look amazing.  Quite interesting to see bits falling into place (pop in, space stations), but also curious to see things that seem to be missing (epic draw distance in space (and on planet, tbh), snow falling, crazy instant warping, gates you walk through to appear somewhere else, much more interesting looking non-natural objects on planets).  

 

And Wtf that giant sand snake thing!  Starting to see why people felt a bit let down!

Maybe, although I know some younger people who have fallen in love with the game as well. I think it's more about a certain mindset, it's a piece of software you have to meet halfway. If you love No Man's Sky it's because half the game exists in your head where you've met it halfway.

 

To me Mercenary was a massive world I could enjoy exploring, to the adults around me there was bemusement that I was being entertained by a screen that was half green, half blue with a basic structure that was clearly made out of pipe cleaners.

So both share settings work, it strips the hud but not the waypoint markers.

Aw,  a shame, so close! 

 

Just finished the Angry Joe review. I kinda like that guy! I wish he didn't shout so often though.  

 

Anyway, I kinda spoiled the ending, but need to say something about it..

That is literally the funniest thing.  I joked with someone at work today (and on here the other day) about how it'd be funny if when you reach the end it just puts you in a new galaxy for ng+..

Thing is fifty notes ain't a halfway price. 

 

Anyway that's my copy sold. Only cost me two quid to rent it for two weeks.

Saw my first non-active portal today. Would be cool if there is some way to trigger it. I still have faith that there are a lot of hidden surprises in the game. Would be criminal not to sprinkle a few Easter eggs around the place.

What, as in working portals that instantly move you to another planet?

I would fucking love to play that game from the trailers, just those few planets but with that density of creatures and plants, with more emergent AI and animal behaviours. Desert worlds, real snow, creatures that move naturally, ships that move naturally, some sort of properly organised ship combat. There's so much in there that looks better than the final release, if the price of eighteen trillion planets was all those things I'd rather have had the five from the demo to explore.

 

I wonder at what point they decided to make the entire HUD hideous? That reticule is lovely.
