No Man's Sky - Interceptor

The photon cannon appears to be quicker when it comes to mining the big asteroids - though I'm still not sure if it results in you getting less minerals as a result - but it's utterly shite for combat. The best combat strategy is to just fly backwards and use the phase beam, you'll hardly ever even take any damage.

Check in buildings. They're in weird big red things on the walls that are easy to miss unless you know what you're looking for.

Anyone else get excited about jumping to a new system and what the planets/moons might reveal? I came across a planet yesterday that had huge eight legged spidery things with big crab heads. Of course I'm going to name them Giant Enemy Crabs - I took a video of them so I can upload, but still working my way through the planet. Just the sense of exploration and the not knowing what's around the corner is just superb.

Because computers don't do true random. If they're spawning random starting locations without a mechanism to deliberately distribute someone far from another you're going to run into something predictable.

 

If I was to speculate I'd say they didn't consider how their starting location or warping mechanism would scale with this many users, and they're finding out their random isn't random enough.

The only new thing that's happened since I started playing is a distress signal that turned into a massive epic space battle that I was totally unprepared for, got blow to bits but it was awesome!!! Wife came in during it and was like what happened to the planet of freaks you're always on...I lol'd and died.

Question for anyone who's past the end of Atlas.

The black holes and anomalies seem to have dried up for me now, so I'm just taking the supposedly quickest route to the centre. However, even with my maxed out drives, this only seems to get me 100LY further per jump, and I'm still over 175,000LY from the centre. Obviously this means I'll need to make 1,750 jumps to get there. Hahaha... yeah, sure. On top of that, one of my warp reactors - the Tau - broke and needed completely rebuilding. This is going to happen all the time isn't it, as a further artificial brake to progress? If so, every time the Theta goes, getting all that gold and emeril together again will be a herculean task.

 

Upshot and question - is there a quicker way of making progress through the galaxy than these interminable 'quickest route' jumps? As I missing something, or did Hello's day one patch simply expand the galaxy so much they stopped people getting to the centre through making the sheer distance involved impractical to cover?

I quite like this approach, and have always (subconsciously until a few years ago) liked 'experience' games. However, it tends to be a slippery slope as an experience is a lot more subjective and thus harder to review and score. Hence there are fellow game journalists (and hardcore gamers I suppose) calling one 'weak' when you praise a game for the experience - I had the same thing with Star Wars Battlefront recently, and frequently with racing games.

 

Interestingly, this would be one of the main reasons for me to abandon scoring a game (I can sympathize with Eurogamer in that sense) and sticking to a review consisting of words. Sadly, media that I work for often require me to deal our grades...

 

I honestly wouldn't know how to rank No Man's Sky 'correctly'. (Glad I didn't have to review it, either :) )

It's the same as GTA Joe. How many hours and fun have we had on that game and giving online a number seems irrelevant? Yeah you can put one on single player I guess, but with a world as big as that and one that after god knows how many hours I've put into it - I'm still finding things...

Loved this review, really excellently written, cheers for the link Le Chuck. I love Keith Stuart. He was easily the best thing about that Charlie Brooker history of computer games, or whatever that programme was a few years ago.

I've been thinking about the similarities between the old Megadrive game Starflight and NMS. I've not read much about anybody discussing it besides just finding this article:

Anybody else remember playing it? Used to love driving my buggy across the terrain mining, picking up lifeforms and finding ruins.

Presumably this means they've patched the ship bug thing that I'm yet to do? Also, how can you dislike that beast?

Yep the patch from yesterday fixed that, when I loaded my game yesterday I had lost my starting ship & had this hunk of metal. It's too big like a tanker, I hate it, will be buying something new when I get to the next star system.
