I must be about twenty hours in now but still have my original trusty multitool. Is there something you need to do to find a better one or just a case of bumping into it?

Every other outpost has a little box on the wall which contains a multi tool you can buy, it's how I've been upgrading mine

The most reliable places I've found are the little bases with a single landing pad.  They usual have an NPC / Shop / red box for buying a multi tool on the wall. Those Beacons you sometimes find that give you an 'Advanced Lifeform Detected' message always lead to one

Works great on PC remote play.

I also just noticed you can pin craft recipes with triangle. Keeps what you need on-screen when walking around. Handy.

It also seems to highlight the resources you need for the recipe with a little item box when you trigger a scan.  Or at least that was what appeared to happening.  I needed Aluminium for a recipe & had pinned it, & when i scanned the Aluminium crystals were coming up with a item box instead of the usual element symbol.

Of course, item boxes still have the item box symbol as well, so it can be confusing.

The game is killing me. I've not been asleep before 2am for 8 nights but I've decided to crash early. Only, the vita is in the drawer next to me and I'm wondering how it will look in remote play...

I'm taking the night off too.

Except I left my iPhone on the train somehow, so I'm now downloading the PC version onto my laptop so I'll have something to do on the train tomorrow.

Big list of stuff missing from trailers, implies something went wrong in development with all those delays because some of them were being demonstrated a few months ago.

Nah I don't think there's anything dramatic behind the scenes. Think it's just HG not being driven by a PR person 24/7 so things were said before release that wouldn't normally be said.

So how the fuck do I start a new game? I missed the ball at the start. And I also need like a fresh start to see if I can enjoy this. I love the art and music but the gameplay loop is boring. Is it

not?

That list is all stuff that was shown in videos working rather than stuff that was said.

The "Four Pillars" videos all seem to be from an earlier build with more stuff.

Not only that but some of the things listed demonstrably are in the game (like the big space battles, or predators killing prey), and it also doesn't credit the game with all the things that weren't in the game (or weren't shown), and now are.

Also, since when was any developer bound by some sort of contract to deliver on absolutely everything that they suggested would be in the game? Surely all games have stuff cut/added for any number of reasons?

Stuff is still being discovered. Unless or until someone hacks the code and proves that certain things are literally not present, the things shown in the demo are still quite possible. I can't see anything in that initial 2014 demo for example that couldn't be in the game. They will have just seeded a planet which was ludicrously abundant and scripted the camera movements accordingly.

I don't get that list at all@RubberJohnny.

everyone has been complaining about how they didn't know what was in NMS or what they would do now playing it. Now there'S a list ;)

I think they delivered in spades on their vision. Might not be to everyone's taste but it's a staggering technical and artistic feat .

I tend to stay away from gaf and reddit so have been pretty unaware of any controversy around this game. But reading that list (and the scorn it's written with) is pretty eye opening.  is this really what people get angry about these days?

You've said this a few times now but it seems perfectly reasonable for people to expect things the developer said would be in the game to be in the game. Regardless of how you feel about it or how important those features are to you.

That's not even engaging with the topic is it?

Geez, I should have posted this in VN1X's thread if I'd known what the atmosphere was like in here.

I thought it was interesting, thanks.

Reminded me a little of the Halo 2 E3 trailer backlash

I don't know if that is reasonable. Seems like a pretty over-entitled viewpoint to me.

Its hard to say though, as I don't think I've ever seen a game (one I was interested in anyway) come under quite this level of microscopic scrutiny. Surely game features change all through development? Maybe they just changed their minds? Maybe they tried, and couldn't get it to work? I mean, I could go through each one of the points mentioned in that list and discuss it, but surely each one falls under the usual disclaimer of "Game still in development. May not reflect final product"?

There's such a weird mood around this game. So many people talking about what the game is/isn't, the hype, the reaction to it. I'd much rather just talk about what's actually in the game, and what could change in future.

I've had a run of pretty dull, dead planets, and then I came across a moon that looks really nice. Not necessarily the prettiest looking thing, but the procedural stuff behind the scenes just seems to have hit a sweet spot, and everything kind of looks like it fits. Did a small video of a space goat on said moon. Okay, certainly not the weirdest creature, but I thought it came together to create a cool little sci-fi moment with the planet in the background, which I've yet to visit.
