No Man's Sky - Interceptor

Thinking about this a lot while working, which is always a good sign.

Is my combination of venom sacs everywhere and a nearby 100% markup unusual? I've upgraded my ship and been farming back and forth, and keen to do more of the same later. But a bit worried about getting too much money and removing one of the 'goals' I can impose on myself.

I have though, had some really big flat plains. Those were gorgeous, it's more the similar "a bit rocky but not really" planets that make up 90% of what I find that were annoying me.

I'd love to see some pix if you have any. Closest I've found was this planet:

No%20Mans%20Sky_20160813022206_zpsfa3ppu

And even that was pretty hilly.

As for the bit in bold, well that's the thing. How many have you found? A hundred? Probably far fewer. Given that there are 18 Quintillion planets, and that systems get more complex depending on their type, it's entirely possible that there are much greater variations in terrain than we've seen.

Now of course, if they've simply set a height limit in their algorithm then by definition that would be impossible. But I don't see why why would have done that. A mountain is what, 2,000-4,000 feet? My very first planet pre-patch was what I would call "mountainous", my second one had very large rock structures that could well have qualified, and another recent one had these:

No%20Mans%20Sky_20160813175041_zpsdapxcl

I mean, I didn't measure them, so they might not qualify, but I guess what I'm saying is that I have faith that stuff will turn up. At any rate I want to keep looking!

Oh, and I miss my second ship too. :(

I have left my starter system!

First planet at the new system is the most barren yet - no fauna, very little flora with a harmless albeit very red atmosphere/environment that makes for a very pleasing sunset.

I've started hanging around trading posts eyeballing potential new ships again...

Conversely, what's the point in planet naming if nobody sees them?

My best name:  Bury Market (World Famous)

I named one star Off Licence with planets named;   Cheap Booze & Fags,  White Lightning 50% off,  Mucky Books on Top Shelf.

Wait, you can name the stars?

Maybe it'll be more like a camp? A temporary base you can craft while you're on a certain planet.

I hadn't thought of that, buildings could be like Ranger camps in Star Wars Galaxies. That profession could craft and throw up a temporary structure to escape the elements, repair equipment, etc. Better than blowing a hole in the floor, or spending 3 days looking for a terminal to call your lost ship.

I think I'm stuck. And by stuck I don't mean that I can't progress I mean that I can't seem to bring myself to leave my current planet. It's not really that it's super awesome or even that much different to the ones that came before it. I've even still got about 3-4 species left to discover. But I've become kind of attached to it now. Feels weirdly like "home". I sort of like the idea of my protagonist being on this vague mission to find the center of the universe or God or the question to the answer 42 or whatever, but then he contemplates his overwhelming insignificance in the face of the vastness of space and time and gets a bit tired and just sort of gives up and settles down on a leafy planet called "Green Hill Zone" and feeds the dinosaurs.

If the "Search for Discoveries" feature works as discussed up thread, then it should be much easier to go back than it was.

More than anything I want them to patch in a locations update that highlights waypoints you've visited over ones you haven't. It's so infuriating going back to somewhere you've been.

I'm sure visited ones are greyed out?

I think where it goes weird is if you use a beacon to highlight one it can highlight somewhere you have been. Meaning what would be grey is now highlighted. As least that's what I'm guessing. I was trying to 100% a planet and it was just a mess of waypoints everywhere.

They are sometimes greyed out, it just doesn't seem 100% consistent.

A few days ago I really tried to investigate it by visiting a fresh planet, accessing a beacon (using the bypass chips) to set the first couple of points, then turning on a transmission tower to see if that produced others.  I couldn't make any real sense of it to be honest and I've moved on now.  Sometimes you also get messages about off planet locations with irritatingly large pins to them, suggesting something absolutely vital could be missed if you don't visit.

My new preferred routine for a new planet is to find and turn on the transmission tower and then head straight for the alien since that is usually the location of one of those one-stop convenience stores.   I have a look at the resources,  learn a few words if possible and move on.  Not got any specific shopping list right now, gradually accumulating cash for my 25-slotter which will be immediately modded with sigma and tau hyperdrives.

Way back in the day along with Elite and Starglider and Mercenary, Infogrames released one of those games that continually sprung up back then: a project that was just too ambitious to even come close to being realised with the technology. It was called Captain Blood and a significant portion of it was about interacting with and gaining the trust of alien races. The version I played was a stripped down Amstrad CPC version of the Atari ST original. It was broken beyond belief and I absolutely loved it.

Me too. I never got anywhere with it, but just the atmosphere was incredibly evocative.

Lovely post btw.

I don't think those are off-planet. If there's a pin leading to a planet that means they're on the other side of it.

Where are the best places to sell your stuff? I've tried in Space Stations and on outposts and whatnot on planets, plus to aliens arriving at these places, but don't ever seem to get a variation of more than 1 or 2% either way :(

You do get pins specifically about off-planet sites. And it can be a bit annoying that they feature as prominently in your HUD as unvisited sites on the planet you're on. I've no idea why they don't dim out or go away altogether if they're on another planet.

Space Stations for me, I wait for the ships to arrive & then sell whenever anything is inflated in prices.

Heridium & Plutonium always jump in price for me of 110%. I've never seen Iron, Copper or Aluminium jump in price.

Ah, ok. My bad.

The waypoint stuff is so confusing.

Sorry, sell to the Aliens or sell to the Galactic trade thingy?

Yeah, that's what I meant. On one occasion I went back to the site in question, which was on a planet I had previously visited, but it was a waste of time (although iirc it was a site yielding the warp drive blueprint (which I already had), so maybe some sites are flagged as high priority places to visit).

With regards to finding Atlas if you've lost the path. So, zoom out to your galaxy map and scan for anomalies. Then select Find Nearest. This will hi-light a system with an anomaly in it. Fly into the anomaly and you'll find the guy in the black helmet. Speak to him. he will direct you to the nearest Atlas interface, or if you want to get closer to the centre, point out a black hole which will send you on your way.

I met Dinosaur Cow on my first planet yesterday, love this game. Get so sucked in time flies & I don't want to play anything else.

I really should rename animals/plants but I just leave them with the default.

While I totally understand it's not for everyone - and that it has real faults - I'm genuinely mystified by the wider reaction to the team and what they've achieved with it. Way back in the day along with Elite and Starglider and Mercenary, Infogrames released one of those games that continually sprung up back then: a project that was just too ambitious to even come close to being realised with the technology. No Man's Sky is pretty much the game that I was playing back then in my imagination. I'm sure the way in which my expectations of games back in the 80s were constantly knocking up against reality is one of the reasons I'm able to enjoy this so much, including its flaws.

So that's what the game reminded me of! Good old Captain Blood.

Presumably 'scan for anomalies' is something that a ship upgrade allows you to do?

I don't think so. I got lost after the first jump from the first anomaly i found and wasn't sure where i'd come from or where to go next. I did the scan and it sent me back to the anomaly i'd just come from.
