No Man's Sky - Interceptor

I have some problems with the game, but I knew going in that there would be some repetitive elements, so I guess that's why they don't really bother me & I just enjoy playing it.

The one thing I do try to do however, i work out how to get the most out of the controls.  Take the Analysis Visor for instance, I know that's possible to zoom in on flora & fauna & scan from a distance (especially handy if it's hostile) & that you can set your own waypoints on certain landmarks like shelters/outposts by clicking 'scan' when it's highlighted (i can't get that the work on Language Stones however, much to my chagrin) but I i'm not sure what all those little white dots that appear in the visor when you're scanning around mean.

Space derelicts and salvage would add some interest to space and planets. Although what planets really need is some different adversaries than the sentinels.

Also saw few bounty hunt missions last night although could see where the mission started at.

During a 2 hour play session last night the wife and I encountered 4 hard crashes. I love this game so much but I do feel that each time I play, I'm constantly rushing to a save point in order to safely preserve my last 10-15 minutes of play. I really hope that the upcoming patch eradicates this issue and allows me to play in a more relaxed fashion.

Could be animals I think they're red before you've scanned them, then go white afterwards.

You know you've played too much (not enough) NMS when:

You're driving along on a lovely summer's evening and you glance up and see the full moon, pale against the deep blue sky. And you instinctively slide your right hand behind the steering wheel to flick R2 and take off towards it.

It's also demonstrably not true. Lots of people have criticised thibgs like the menu system, the galactic map, the lack of planetary maps, the pop in etc whilst also still enjoying the game. Similarly plenty of people have said it's not for them.

I can't say I've seen plenty of people say it's not for them. A handful, perhaps. There have been a sprinkling of criticisms too, yes, that's fair enough, but totally overpowered by almost boundless praise. I'm not sure the inverse would be tolerated - a post slating the game but pointing out a few positives, for instance, would elicit suggestions to stop playing and stop posting, I expect. I'm not sure real discussion is the purpose here anyway, which is why the likes of boxoctosis feel they have to post their impressions in a completely different thread in case they ruin the party, and why I've been responding to posts by PM instead of in the thread. I realise this is more a criticism of rllmuk generally than NMS though so I'll wind my neck in, I guess.

The animals have red dots before you scan them, but i'm talking about when you're looking far off into the distance (way beyond scan range) & these little white dots appear briefly like 'pings' on a sonar.

Could be scanned animals, but could also be undiscovered locations.  I haven't yet tried to get track them down & check as they are very far away.

I've got the 'shoot straight off into space when you take off' bug. However, I'm loving this game too much to be angry so it's just an experience that I'm adjusting to :)

Also, found how to jump back to my starting system through the galactic map - think the servers were just getting hammered as when I now search it shows all my finds - can now go back to the emeril planet and mine the crap out of it.

Well for balance I'll say that the pop up, rough textures, missing bits of planet and bases hanging in the air before dropping into place while I glide about hunting Monoliths is at times really shit. Also once I get bored of finding Monoliths and new worlds there will be nothing left to keep me playing as the game (for me at least) has no linear story for me to follow.

Just for the record.

How are you doing this?

You go on the galactic map and search for discoveries - I think it's been down for a few days as when I did it before it just continually searched, but last night it found my discoveries and to go back to the systems you've found you press right on the d-pad. There she was in all her glory, my very first find - the Diana Dors system.

I literally couldn't give two shits if someone doesn't like the game.  I like hearing people give their opinions. Sure there are a handful of people like Davros who argue with people who dislike the game / aspects of the game, but it's not as if everyone does it.  FWIW I don't like the way that is done either.  To take your pub analogy from that PM a bit further - if you overhear a bunch of strangers in the corner of the room talking positive about something you dislike, would you go over and interrupt them to give them your point of view?  You might, but I think you'd be a bit of a dick if you did.

Of course I wouldn't. They're strangers having a private conversation in a pub. The whole point of my pub analogy was that rllmuk isn't a pub. It's a forum where people get involved with any ongoing discussion they like and often make dissenting arguments. I'd say that's especially important when a particular discussion is overwhelmingly one-sided. Except in threads about just-released popular video games, it seems.

Do you have to make all the jumps necessary to get back there? probably a stupid question.

Patch:

Posting overnight, Murray wrote: "Awesome day at Hello Games, we're going to make some people very happy with a PC and PS4 patch that's in test right now :)"

Since the game launched on PS4 and PC last week the studio has been working around the clock to help users who ran into issues with the game, and issued an experimental build of the game via Steam which solved a number of problems.

We'd assume much of what's included in the patch will already have been covered by the experimental patch notes, though Murray has previously teased much more interesting additions for the game.

Last week Murray said players can look forward to getting "the ability to build bases and own giant space freighters". He also noted that "Temporal AA and my new cloud rendering tech should be coming soon too. It will really change the game again, and enhance it visually".

Yeah, the Sentinels are pretty rubbish. I like their design, and there seems to be a bit of semi-interesting lore about them, but as an enemy they're more of a nuisance than anything else. The planet I just left was apparently classed as "Endangered - Sentinels attack on sight" which is a cool idea in principle but made exploring slightly more fraught. That could have been a good thing, but it's just the same floating dudes appearing out of the sky each time you so much as look at anything, and all you do is blast them out of the sky with one plasma grenade, and move on.

Ah-ha! That's great news. That was firmly on my wish list, just a simple list of places you'd been.

So you just hit the d-pad button to search for Discoveries and it highlights systems you've already found? Every time I've tried that I just get a spinning circle.

Game is regularly crashing when warping now, even if I leave a planet first. It's into piss-taking territory now. <_<

Should be the highest priority thing they should be looking at fixing. I don't get warp crashes, I do get crashes when loading into the game, a lot. Sometimes it takes me 2 or 3 goes just to load in.

this is really moon on a stick ; but imagine if you married Halo's enemies in NMS, with the drop ships, fighting for outposts etc .

There are definitely balancing issues ; you can become very rich very quickly, meaning money is never a problem. There are functional problems, not being able to optimize and rearrange suit/ship/tool items needs fixing and the fact you can't preview an item if you don't have a spare slot is poor, as it the lack of any indication of reclaimed materials from scrapping.

Planets are flat, there by that I mean there are no extremes. It's like constantly flying over wales ( the inhabitants on many planets bear a resemblance too). I suspect , however, it would not take much to end up with randomly generated spikey balls for planets.

But. There is enough there to set yourself goals as has been said. I am determined to learn every word of every language. My priority has shifted from exploring every inch of every planet to searching out about the races and the back story, and I'm mining to keep my money topping up in the meantime. I have to say I'm loving it.

I'll play for a hour or so. Then turn it off and watch some Olympics. And then I'll stat thinking about it again and I'll boot it up. It keeps drawing me back for more.

Oh, and I crafted an Atlas pass last night, which was nice.

So I am on a planet with acid rain named Acid Funk. I upgraded my suit with the fifth level of protection against toxicity. Topped up it lasts a total of 40 seconds. That's a real serious bug or simply totally useless considering I can top up my actual hazard protection and it last for ages.

I think its pretty good that there are some planets that are just too harsh to make any meaningful visit. ... Oh wait, you mean you suit protection lasts fine in the same conditions?

So how come I can't just fly to a waypoint that's 30 minutes away? The timer keeps jumping around that point. I have to fly off and round to the other side or use my boost? But why can't I just fly there at normal speed? Technical reasons I assume?

Finally started this last night, really enjoying the first few hours of pootling about, gradually learning the games systems. Anyway sorry if this has been posted before / is obvious, but to remove the pre-order ship nagging notification on Steam you can just do this:

That's a good way of putting it. On Sunday night I was totally absorbed in meeting a couple of crafting goals so I could fend off some pirates that chased me back down to the surface and it was thoroughly engaging, and I had adventures that spun off from that.

But then last night I wandered aimlessly round a couple of other planets in the same system, fretted that I'd wandered off the 'Atlas path' (whatever that is), wondered why I had a permanent waypoint marker back to Sunday night's planet and ended the evening jumping to a new system with ennui setting in.

But then pretty much as soon as I went to bed I was thinking about the planet I'd just jumped to and planning how I'm going to upgrade past the starter ship.

It's a weird game. Extended play-time and reading of this thread lets you see behind the curtain, which can ruin the illusion, but it just has this magnetic draw.
