No Man's Sky - Interceptor

I think life support gets drained no matter what, with hazard protection being a separate issue. Hazard protection stuff gets recharged for free once the hazard's gone too, while life support needs a manual recharge.

It kind of makes sense that you need it though in order to protect against potential alien viruses and stuff. I'm looking at you, Prometheus. <_<

Just double dipped on PC so I don't have to keep bringing the PS4 to "work". Had to fiddle with the settings as it was stuttering a bit but think it's almost there now. The game still looks gorgeous sat up close to a big monitor, especially with a bit more FOV.

Start planet is a beauty (blue grass) and I have spurned the Atlas this time. I think I may play it as a roguelike this time around. If I die, I delete the save...

Also, I may have to regulate how often I check crashed modules and wall panels for blueprints. The game doles them out far to frequently in the early stages and there's very little you can do with them until you have plenty of slots. Really wish some of the balancing had been sorted before launch, but hey-ho.

I'd like to be able to stop and hover.

Yes, that'd be nice, especially when trying to land somewhere specific.

Some more shots of so-called Awesome World here. What a misnomer that turned out to be. Don't be fooled by the verdant pastures replete with many varieties of grazing Space Dinos - it's hell.

I'm way too rich because the first system I hopped to had one planet covered in Emeril and a second planet covered in gold. And a third planet that was shit. Bought a ship for 2.2m after about 5 hours in game, which I think is probably Not Right. But I don't really care as I'm going to focus on getting crashed ones up and running now I think, seems a better idea.

Swapped my beloved, perfectly setup multi-tool for one with two more slots last night, then instantly regretted it.

Cant remember which modules I had installed & in what order, couldn't even break down a locked door straight afterwards without using the hastily installed grenades.

Well, a couple of reasons.

One is the way the game seems to have several levels of graphical fidelity which seem to load in at each "layer" for want of a better word. If you could fly your ship so close that it'd need to load in all the individual flowers, grass, animals etc, I think the engine would struggle.

But I also think it would wreck the pace of the game, and the feel of it. I can picture it now. You fly down to a planet and zoom along the surface. This is great! Then you you try and fly sideways down a canyon. You fuck it up, die, returning to the Space Station you saved on. Then you have to fly back to the planet to try and grab your stuff. Your wing clips a rock...

Actually, while flying, it already draws in the flora / fauna if you get close enough and look down! (or it does on the PC version at least)

And you've got the wrong idea about the consequence of crashing.. I was thinking more about a bump/crash could send your ship off course, ejecting you and damaging components at the same time.  You'd then have to find your ship and fix up like you did at the beginning. I think it could lead to some really good stories of exploring this crazy universe.

The threat of trashing your ship is one of the most thrilling bits of Elite imo.  NMS is a survival game, after all!

I just want an option for slightly more involved flight control!! It's like the rolling people are only just discovering - its cool but stupid that it 'autocorrects' you back to level by itself!   :(

But not sideways. Which is something that annoys me in space. I wish I was able to manoeuvre my ship while maintaining its current flight path. Which is something I'm sure enemy ships can do.

It's daft, all they'd have to do is put lateral thrusters on the right stick.. Looking around isn't that useful tbh!

A 'stabilisers off' mode for flight would be very welcome. It's like how trudging around on foot is quite boring but melee-boosting down hills and over canyons at the risk of dashing yourself on the rocks below is thrilling. I'm not really seeing the technical constraints that prevent it.

No! See, you're fiddling around now, and if you take away my ability to look around which I swear I use almost constantly, I will find you dood, I don't care how many quintillion planets there are, I will find you, and I will hurt you.

When they patch in the ability to see other players...

But you could still have that, too.  Elite manages it nicely. :) iirc you click in right stick to toggle between thrusters / free look.  It's really nice!

If I'm really daydreaming I want VR compatibility for this tbh!

I don't think VR would work as it stands. The head look was encouraging, but as I understand it you're basically just a control panel and canopy floating in space while you're flying. Look too far in any direction and you'll just see space.

The differences between this and Elite Dangerous's control scheme still messes me up in flight. Would be awesome if they could patch customisable controls in this. I understand not even the PC version has customisable pad controls?

Other than that, I am properly loving this game!

It would be like Dark Souls though in that regard; don't get impatient trying to retrieve your stuff or you're likely to lose it. It would be a nice option for those that want it.

I'd prefer them to fix the stuff that should be working but isn't, before thinking of adding new stuff. There are quite a few major bugs.

Next wish would be for them to sort out the niggles like having ambient wildlife noise on barren/low-atmosphere planets. Stuff that is a mistake that also breaks the illusion. And the inventory management makes no sense - it needs to be rethought, the power cell conundrum is a perfect example - they made the effort to include these items in the game, they should have a reason for existence. I'd include the fuel thirsty hazard protection stuff in that too - currently, it's worthless. It's as though they put these things in because those are the kind of things games have, without considering how they should work.

Then and only then, have a think about how to enhance the experience (for a sequel or whatever). The groundwork they have laid here is incredible, the potential for improving upon it is equally large. It seems like the hard work has been done already, and any improvements should only require time. One thought that occurred to me was to have the trading system as an online transaction between players, like an MMO auction house. That would promote exploration to find planets with rare materials so you could sell them to other players, and would also provide a natural economy rather than the artificial percentage ups/downs it currently has. My universe may have an abundance of elements that yours does not - the game is already built for it and plenty of people get their kicks out of that kind of thing.

Rare item spoiler:

I landed on a low atmosphere planet that I would class as the most beautiful I've visited so far - dark craggy rock horizons, starry skies, purple moon... no obvious caves in my vicinity but I fell through a hole into a tunnel system under my feet.

In there I found an egg shaped stone that let me interact with it, rather than just telling me to destroy it for Iron like usual. I did so and the thing peeled open like a face hugger egg, which also instantly alerted the sentinels and sent them out to hunt me. I retrieved an item from the egg, which in the description was classed as 'extremely rare'. I fled from the sentinels back to the space station in excitement to sell my illicit bounty... and it was only worth 23,000 units :/

I have a feeling that would have been worth a lot more if there was an online auction system. As it is, the story is better than the value of the item. I won't bother going back to hunt for more.

Even though it's rather hand-holdy, I prefer the spaceflight model in this to the one in Elite (Dangerous). ED kind of lost me with its switching between modes and comprehensive ship controls. I know that's what people wanted and they dig it, but balancing power resources and heat signatures was a step too far for me. Ironically, the NMS model more closely resembles the original Elite, which is what I was after all along.

Planet-side stuff, yeah, it would be nice to hover and thrust up and down, but planet flight seems to exist only to quickly move from one location to the next, so I'm quite happy hopping.

It actually feels more like a gunship on the planets. Its alright, but they've ruined some lovely skill flying potential by having everything as "blocks" as pointed out earlier.

Ironically you can blast a hole through asteroids and fly through them.

Well there would be a little bit of an issue when it comes to being in the cockpit. The game doesn;t render the ship at all when in the cockpit. All it does is render the console in front and that's it. That's why there is no free look.

I seem to have stumbled on a planet where they were to experiments to find out what the sentinels are, probably why they get so hostile so quickly.  Getting history of the sentinels from the monoliths around the place too, probably just coincidence but it's cool.  This is my first jump to a red star, single planet with three moons.
