Completely agree.

Its a reflection of real life, especially Japan where drinks machines are like this are common.

I have at least 3 pictures of me buying a drink from a drinks machine in Japan, purely based on this scenario.

When I went I even did a series of vending machine video blogs in 2009  Saw some crazy stuff over there.

Fuck that, the overly long and unnecessary animations for simple, satisfying things like buying and consuming a refreshing drink were what made Shenmue special.

It mattered because it was pointless. The fact that you could do certain things purely for the sake of them and that they had no in-game benefit was what made it feel like a slice of real life, where spending hours on pachinko machines and buying capsule toys all day literally is a waste of time.

Agree.... At the time I felt like I was living an alternative life :D Loved walking around the locations in Shenmue - felt like a living breathing slice of a Japanese towns/district. Loved the little attention to details... the Xmas decs going up in the festive season for example amongst many other details.

People have actually visited the real locations in Japan that Shenmue drew inspiration from they look uncannily familiar! :)

See: https://venturebeat.com/community/2014/09/07/shenmue-a-gamers-pilgrimage/

For me personally don't think this has been bettered for the feeling of being in another place.

My first trip to Japan, four years ago, on the train from the airport to Tokyo...fucking huge grin on my face as I was looking at houses and villages with one thought about them....they look just like they did in Shenmue!!! :D Happy memory!

Oh no!

I pressed the "Buy a drink" button by mistake.

I'll nip to a friends house and have a natter with them whilst the animation plays.

Seriously - I hope they learned from the last 20 years.  The swooping camera and length of this one animation is madness. The camera just keeps on swooping about as if something interesting is happening.  Does buying a drink even affect anything in the game?

I hope Shenmue 3 doesn't ruin everything by making me view 1 and 2 by today's standards.  I can imagine the originals turning up on a TV show called "It was OK in the 90s", showing the one minute long process of buying a drink whilst Stuart Marconie and Grace from Big Brother slag it off.

I absolutely hate it when people, faced with valid critics about their beloved game answer that the critic "don't get it".

But still, you absolutely don't get Shenmue.

Waking up every day and catching the bus to go to work is honestly one of my favourite gaming memories. I adored how slow and methodical the game was.

:) Think with Shenmue unless people have played through it they might not fully appreciate the experience. Isolating videos out of specific elements of gameplay (animations etc) doesn't give a fair indication of the experience overall.

Never did make my way through Shenmue 2 - despite owning it on DC and Xbox. Think I was just a bit disheartened that essentially I'd be playing a story that I could never see through to completion - although hopefully at least we may see the conclusion of the story depending on how successful 3 is.

Looking forward the HD remasters. I will be playing the second one through this time on the PS4 hopefully! :)

Doesn't matter how successful it is after, nothing to stop him doing another fund raiser for a 4th game.

I'll buy the remasters for sure, and 3 when it hits. Please, Japanese with subs; an English dub, while an essential part of what made the original so memorable, would be a waste of time and money.

It's a a good time to be a Sega fanboy. ^_^

For the original DC games or the sequel? IIRC they've managed to get back the original VA for both language options so I assume it'll be dual language this time around, rather than a forced choice based on release region.

Quite honestly, I think I'd prefer them just to not show off anything more unless they've got something really close to finished.

That dev video was fucking useless. Casually manipulating the grandmother into various states of dementia is not pretty.

Now this might be a claim from somebody who is teh biased, but before he got involved in bringing this back to life, he was a fan of the games themselves so he could be giving his honest opinion on the state of it currently:

Quote

As a big fan of the Shenmue series, naturally this wasn’t something I could ignore, so I got in touch with him right away. In our January 2nd article [Japanese], Mr Biscay gave his thoughts about Japan’s subcultures, but today we’ll share what we learned about Shenmue III.

To start off, we asked him something anyone who is a Shenmue fan would like to know more about: to explain in more detail the meaning of his comment “We will really have the game we are all waiting for.”

“When I played the latest version of the game I had a feeling of reassurance, like I had come back home. It was a joyful feeling, just like reuniting with an old friend or relative. I think if you’re a fan of the Shenmue series, you’ll feel a flood of satisfaction. Without a doubt, you’ll feel that ‘It’s here at last – the bona-fide sequel to Shenmue II!’ People who cried at the E3 announcement will surely shed tears again”.

How so? If you liked the old games, you'll probably like how the sequel turns out would seem to be the simple takeaway. Cédric Biscay was a fan of the old games and was in a position to actually do something practical about getting a sequel out, you can claim he might be merely saying this based on his financial involvement in making it, but he could equally be speaking as a fan of the games too.

His comment is preaching to the choir isn't it. The choir is already on-board, heck they supported to Kickstarter for sure.

"You'll love Shenmue 3 if you liked Shenmue 1 and 2". Ok, I did not like Shenmue 1 and 2.

Of course there is a chance the translation is clumsy and/or the interview is aimed at a very specific market audience.

The term that comes to mind when I read his comment is "rose-tinted glasses".

The term that comes to mind when reading this comment is "Miserabilist poster sees that the Shenmue 3 thread has been bumped with a scrap of news. Said poster then thinks it's both wise and insightful to then claim that the article is nothing but a perspective from "rose tinted glasses" and then inform us that they never even liked Shenmue 1 and 2 anyways."

Hey! I don't like Football! Think I should go into the FIFA thread and tell everyone they're playing a bunch of shit?
