I did think at the time there was no way they were gonna get this game out in 2017 so there's no real surprise.

However after so many other KSs having gone tits up, I can't help but feel slightly nervous at this being delayed by a year.

Yeah, not surprised. Their updates have just always been 'We're working on the game. Here is a picture concept of a tree that we were thinking about putting in the game. Here is a photo of some shoes we like, maybe one of our characters could have similar shoes? What do you think? Oh hey, here is a new chair that we got for the studio. Do you like it?"

The cynic in me says that they are going to struggle with this on a $6m budget when the original cost $47m, over 15 years ago.

Was a completely different time. There wasn't any 3D engines for a start and Sega had to develop it all from scratch, train people up from 2D to 3D modelling etc. etc. Nowadays there's loads of people to do such jobs and plenty of engines. That 47m was also stretched over a couple of consoles lifetimes including the scrapping of the Saturn version. All adds up!

Wonky face animations, and some fairly wooden fighting animations, but the environments are where I'd want them to be.

Moving in the right direction, but feels like at least another two years of development ahead. Anyway, no more trailers for me now!

It's really coming along, "feels" right to me, though it's pretty obvious they haven't got into the niceties like character model improvements and facial animation. When they get the eyes moving and improve the hair etc that'll give it the breath of life it needs.

Otherwise I continue to be a very happy Shenmue fan :D

I think it's more likely that 10 million dollars minus costs is not going to get you the triple AAA quality you're expecting for things like detailed facial animations.

Seeing things like this, to me, shows that they're thinking about what they need to deliver and prioritising how they're gonna do it.

Agreed, but Yu had animated eyes as far back as VF2 – he's not going to overlook it here where it's so critical to immersion.

Absolutely. It's a vital detail, along with expressive brows. Looking at the quality of the other animations I'm in no doubt it's just as you say, priorities.

Certainly has the impatient out there kicking off a bit, though.

The environments look superb. They have obviously and correctly prioritized world building at this stage of development over character models and animation.

Much better than the actual game is lengthy and finished and then add the polish to the character models and cut scenes

Reading the Gaf thread this morning made my piss boil, huh duh bad faces...it's a teaser trailer by a small team on a tiny budget for fucks sake

If I could reach into my screen and give them a slap I would.

I'd say that's a fair bit of feedback personally, If they can't at the bare minimum match what they did 18 years ago then they need to reevaluate.

I remember watching the Shenmue passport back in the day which had those huge highly detailed 3D rendered faces, They're still a long way off from matching that. Maybe the team at Sega was just so on point and perfect for the game at the time.

There's something about the eyes in this latest vid that don't match the original games, There's a layer of expression missing.

Even if it's a small team, you'd hope that the facial expressions would be at least as good as Ryo's face in the original Dreamcast game. Also, in a game that's about talking for the most part, you need the facial expressions to be at least acceptable. Or else you get pulled out of the experience every time you ask for directions or whether they've seen a certain car on a certain day under certain weather conditions :D

It's obviously still early though, so I see no need to worry. The animations are obviously still placeholder, just look at the way Shenhua points and puts her arm back down at the beginning. There's no way any animator has spent time polishing that. The environments already look good, so I'd imagine that they're now going to concentrate on getting the talky bits right.

Ryo was always an emotionless plank though, and I don't remember the faces in S1 or 2 being especially expressive, outside of the more 'zany' characters.

I'm more concerned by Shenhua's face ATM. It doesn't look good at all and I hope they come up with something better.
