Well given that other high profile big budget crowdfunding games have all chosen to delay release, I wouldn't be surprised if they did, it's just the question of who is paying for any potential delay, devs got to eat and pay for their housing.

Well, they could always get a job at the harbour to make ends meet

Sony to announce another kickstarter.  Crowd goes wild.

But really, going with Episodes sounds sensible in finishing some of it and releasing and then if needed ask for more money to get more episodes out.

It's not coming out in 2017. I don't see them splitting into episodes either - that has never worked out well on a Kickstarter. I think some sponsorship or Sony funds will happen if they need a little more time.

I thought Dreamfall Chapters and Broken Sword did alright... But yeah, the problem here would be that Shenmue is already episodic - splitting it into even smaller bits wouldn't be great.

I'm pretty sure there was talk a while ago that Yu Suzuki saw more games after Shenmue III, but I'm not sure it's a good idea to plan for that! I'm not sure another Shenmue kickstarter would work out quite as well.

Maybe I've missed something here, but is this going to be episodic or something? I can see redoing the end of Shenmue II being a nice reintroduction to the series but that part isn't exactly massive. You get the sword and that's it. If it's episodic and that's an episode that would be somewhat disappointing.

yes, but it IS coming out. That notion still comes with fanfare!

I thought the "split the episodic games into episodes" was a joke, not a serious suggestion! That would kill it forever more.

But yep, it does sound as if they're a way off having a playable, story driven game. I'm sure Yu's ambition and talent will see it through and if that's not until 2018, I'll certainly cope.

He stated ages ago he had scoped it out based on the budget available, I was just admitting a certain amount of surprise that prep time would seem to be longer than full production as it's been over 1 year since the Kickstarter ended. I suppose we shall see, I'll go back to ignoring this investment, it's been 15 years already, 1 or 2 more makes no difference at this point in time.

Thing is the first two went crazy budget wise so I'm just wondering if he's going to the do the same with this one and how long Sony will wait till they force him to publish it  I'm assuming it's mostly Sony money at this point.

The French bloke who we can thank for getting the ball rolling on it last claimed Sony's financial involvement isn't that great, they're basically paying for the PS4 port and the free publicity, he's responsible for raising money too and is a producer on it so I'll assume he knows a fair bit about the financials.

They say the updates page on Kickstarter hasn't been updated since 2015, yet it's this week's update on it that's triggered this "news". It's had an update most months!

Saying that a hugely ambitious game is unlikely to make its December 2017 release date when it's not ready to show at the same year's E3 doesn't seem very contentious to me.

EG also say Yu has a "rigorous schedule" to stick to, and then EG complain they're not breaking that schedule by appearing at E3 instead. Not only that, but ever since the beginning, Yu has caveated the release date - "please understand the schedule may change as the project evolves".

It's a non-story.

Wise choice IMO. Whatever they show will be under serious scrutiny due to the nature of the project, better to show it with more polish and closer to completion than early at E3 and risk toxic word of mouth from internet morons who don't get why a team on a small project can't make the game look better than a 500 team bioware effort

To be fair, most games look better than the last Mass Effect so that comparison doesn't really work anymore.
