Shenmue III - PS4/PC | Out Now!

It is surprising how deep the combat system was in Shenmue II, I just spammed the odd cheap move to get through that stuff instead of doing that level of training to git gud at it so never even knew the depths you could reach.

They released an update notice recently, currently into area size design.

One of the great things about Shenmue is the under-the-surface level of combat depth! It's just tucked in there. It didn't really need to be, but it was another one of the joys of the game - you could spend as much or as little time on it as you wanted.

New screens from the update got me excited all over again!

Yu Suzuki was in China recently promoting the game, some early environment footage was shown off. The PC original will be useful in tapping that country, as the game practically screams focus-tested for a Chinese audience, if we ignore the possible backlash about having to play as a Japanese person anyway.

And just a reminder that the tweetathon continues on the 3rd of each month until Sega finally do the sensible thing and re-release the original games, opening them up to a new generation. The re-release of the original games will likely have a big impact of Shenmue 3's finacial success when it is released. So please join us on twitter on the 3rd of December and please visit this page for further details:

You can also win prizes:

Once Sega do this last thing, Team Yu will finally be able to rest knowing we've done all we can do.

They've put out a backer update, which includes a partial recap of Yu Suzuki's recent visit to China, some possible game spoilers in there :)

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ysnet/shenmue-3/posts/1433395

As you may know, I have recently spent a little time in China to promote and do research for Shenmue 3. I was able to give a give a presentation at the Chuapp X 2015 on the beginning of how I first started making Shenmue, the changing of the times along with the changes in technology, and the work flow of Shenmue 3’s production. I would like to share a portion of that presentation with you here.
This project was conceived to be scalable, since the game would necessarily need to be adjusted based on the Kickstarter. Once the Kickstarter was complete and the budget for the project determined, a detailed work flow was produced to fit within those constraints. Following along with the game work flow, we have now begun our baseline research work with UE4. I find this to be the most exciting phase of the game development. Having completed the baseline research, we will then move on to the GDD (game design document) and TDD (test-driven development) processes. Once these steps have been completed, actual production will begin.

A test model room within UE4. A shadow resembling Ine-san’s is present. Why do you suppose that is?

A work in progress teaser trailer is being shown at Shibuya Productions event 'Magic' which is held today in Monaco France. The event starts now (8.25am) and it's being covered by Shenmue Dojo.

Shenmue III producer, Shibuya Productions President, and MAGIC Monaco founder Cedric Biscay has said we can expect a work-in-progress teaser, likely in the form of video, screenshots, and information from Yu Suzuki himself during the hour and five minute Shenmue III presentation.

I would like to formally apologise to the entire forum and by extension the rest of the human race for when I posted in here that people should let it go. I was gloriously wrong and thus am duly chastened.

... (And I never let it go :( )

??? It's looking like that? Sheeeeeeeeeeyit.

Hurry up next year, Lan Di, I'm coming for ya!

Or more likely, I'll potter around somewhere opening loads of drawers and saying 'I see' to everyone and this will just be chapter x and I won't even get to beat the hell out of Lan Di.

Only next year! I started the original on an emulator and while it's not perfect (buggy shadows and grating voices), the memories are coming back. It's still amazing how far games have come.

Which version? an undub exists and the never finished Russian emulator runs it better. I was still experiencing stuff I never saw the first time around, though trying to get a 100% run through in one go is pretty much impossible considering the branching nature of some of the choices you can make.

I'm using NullDC and the original UK version of Shenmue.  Hoping I can get a copy of the second one too as I never even finished it!

You should try the Russian emulator then, more accurate but as a result requires significantly more powerful hardware. The Undub fixes the VO problem (it also turns out they never actually translated all the free quest speech as the original Japanese version has more text than what they chose to make available in the foreign translation).
