Apparently if you opened packs between 6pm and 11.30pm on Dec 28th, EA are refunding those packs back into your account, as they forgot to put the Viera, Bergkamp, etc prime icons in the pack pool.

Looking back at my posts, I was playing DKT that evening, so might not have had any packs to open...

I got 2 50k packs, F all in them of course.

My mate ended up with 9 various packs, and then the lucky bastard they gave him another 12 the next day!

Yeah, SIF Ashley Young at LB, or IF Alonso there if you want a bit more height. Valencia at RB for sure. IF Ederson in goal, or obviously when you can afford him; De Gea.

And then think about what type of CAM you like. If you want someone a bit more mobile, go with IF Lingard. If you want someone to spray passes or shoot from outside the box, splash out on De Bruyne or Erikson. Pogba is ideal, but much more expensive. Or consider dropping Ibrahimovic down to CAM? His passing isn’t the best, but other than that he’s pretty awesome.

It all comes down to how you play and who you’re happy with. With 60k, you’re probably only going to be able to afford either Erikson, Valencia, Ibra or IF Lingard. SIF Young and IF Alonso are about 80k, and De Bruyne is about 170k

Brams a bit slow eh?

Erikson is the nuts though imo, his shots outside the box often hit the net.

With 60k in the bank is there anything I could be doing to improve this setup? Other than saving for someone like Kante, Pogba or IF Alli I’m struggling to see any changes that would be really worth investing in.

Courtois! I had Cech in goal before him, who you think he would be good enough but as soon as I put Courtois in goal he is just stand out head and shoulders upgrade, who constantly gets me wins by making amazing saves. I think he is still my most expensive player, picked him up when he was around 90k but still totally worth it.

I originally dropped Aurier for Walker but went back after 5 games, for me people seemed to get in behind him quite often but Aurier might not be as fast, he certainly isn't slow but he didnt wander as much and just has amazing strength. Same goes for Kolasinac who I play at LB.

Just seen this - get Jordi Alba in your life!

I’d also have Begovic over Schm. 6’6” and saves with feet trait.

I dropped 59k on Courtois last night following Steelys recommendation but have yet to try him out.

@Timmo I did have Alba in the side but then packed an untradeable Alonso so figured I would cash in on Alba and to be fair Alonso is actually very good even though his pace isn't the best. Seems to have great positioning and rarely loses a header.

I think I've now fully convinced myself I'll never be in the WEL, I'm just not good enough and probably never will be.

The skill that some of the gamers have is leaps and bounds above mine.

Even with the team I have, I can get creamed 5-0 against an 82 side easily, their players seem to be able weave in, out and around my own, they get into the boxes for easy passes or crosses and then score simple shots, whilst I can barely get to their 3rd before I'm swamped by three defenders and possession is then once again lost, but my defence skit and dance around their attackers or leave massive tunnels for them just to walk down and fire off long shots that seamlessly hit the net, this one guy playing Hernandez in a 4321 formation was just ridiculous, every clear shot that he took well outside the box went in, it was just depressing, that card is almighty.

Maybe its the skills I need to learn, they certainly use them and they can pass 2 or 3 players easily, I can only pass to ball to move up.

Anyway therapy session over thanks for listening! :hat:

@Jerec I honestly wouldn't worry about skills too much. One of the best players in the world, called Kurt0411, doesn't use them. It's way more important to be unpredictable than anything else. The only skill I'd insist on learning is the drag back which is really simple. Hold L1+R1 and then push the left stick in the opposite direction to your player. You can augment this move by changing the direction of the exit with the left stick or faking it entirely by pushing the left stick back in the original direction. Vary it up and you'll be unpredictable.

Mechanically, the most important thing to learn (if you haven't already) is manual player switching. Using the right stick to select the player you want is a bit woolly but keep practicing and you'll get it. This is vital for you to track and stop that through ball you can see is about to happen or to bring a specific midfielder into position.

When defending, focus on your team's shape. Against good players you aren't going to tackle the ball carrier after a couple of seconds unless they overcommit or end up in a dead end. Generally I'll make a tackle as they receive the ball or else I'm regrouping and trying to anticipate their next pass. InceptionXX on Youtube (great player) put a video out the other day about defending which is very much worth watching. If you focus on your team's shape rather than desperately chasing the ball you will tend to profit. Most of the time when I'm defending I'm focussing on three things - firstly I'm making sure that my backline stays solid and unbroken whenever possible. Secondly I'm trying to keep my midfield similarly solid by moving them back collectively using player switching. The absolute most important thing is having one midfielder staying central and patrolling in front of the defence. This is easily your most important defender on the pitch. Many use Bakayoko for this role but you'll see Fabinho, Viera etc. They should be tall which helps their tackle range and they should be strong. The area just in front of the penalty area is the biggest danger zone on the pitch so keep it congested. Try and defend with your midfielders as much as you can. Lastly I'm always watching for dangerous runs. If a player is breaking forward centrally then your opponent is probably going to try a through ball. Don't try and play them offside, it's too risky. Place your man goal side and make sure you're there to either intercept or to tackle the receiver the second they receive it.

When attacking I follow another set of rules. Firstly, unless I'm countering, I won't make more than three forward passes (usually two!) without passing backwards. This helps your team to move forward collectively. Secondly I'll try and involve my fullbacks on any attack which isn't a counter attack. This adds width and opens gaps in the centre of the pitch. A simple one two between a full back and centre mid can end with you in the final third and with options. Most of the other stuff is instinctive and can't really be taught with words but generally speaking you want to keep the ball moving with plenty of passing (always face your receiver to ensure the pass is crisp) and once again try not to be predictable. Mixing up attacks is where most people fall short (including me if I'm playing badly) because a predictable opponent is an easy opponent.

If you do manage to qualify then you'll probably do better than you think. Lots of people qualify for the first time and win a fair bunch of their matches.

I don’t use any skills at all, other than an occasional fake pass/shot. I play 4-1-2-1-2 with Kante at CDM and staying back. I have my 2 strikers with lots of pace and my CAM set to stay forward. I then play ultra defensive at first to get a feel for the opposition and break on the counter with lots of 1-2’s and Pogba breaking from midfield. My full backs rarely get upfield unless I’m chasing a game. Sometimes I’ll start on Ultra Attacking if I have kick off and I feel like a change of pace.

Keep at it, it took me ages to qualify but the experience of playing the DKT and Seasons helps a lot. I played the DKT last night, even though I’d already qualified by getting Gold 3 last week and won it on my first go

I think its what Timmo said, being able to guess where the balls going to go, loads of times I made stupid passes and I could see their player was there to intercept the ball, I'll try that little drag move later on playing Seasons and Squad Battles see how I get on.

I'm going to go 4-2-3-1 (2) with Kante and Bakayoko on the CDM and use those two when im pulling back in defence and let the AI control the back 4, see if this helps stop those tunnels opening up in the centre.

I use the R1 button to hassle the player, should I bother with that or does that just bring out another play from formation and open up a hole?

Really not meaning to rain on your new formation Jerec! But I do find a lot of people gravitate towards 433 type and 41212 formations for a reason.

I may be along in this one, but RM/LM haven't been very useful to my over the last two versions, I find them too deep and wide to have an real impact in danger areas.
