Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

No but it would be better if you had, IMO. I think the relationships are more enjoyable if you know the back story and you get to know about Nate's personality, traits and character flaws which are relevant. There's nothing mind blowing but I quite enjoyed following the story across four games.

Oh yes. Been looking forward to this one.

  • Survival Co-op
  • New Game mode - King of the Hill
  • 2 maps, Prison and Train Wreck (Uncharted 2)
  • Classic Uncharted music returns in menus and gameplay. (hype)
  • New skins and customization items.
  • New 'flashback' (M4, Para 9, Deagle, Pak 80) weapons!
  • Color customization! 25 color combos for every skin in the game. (hype)
  • 5 Survival difficulties. Easy Moderate Hard Crushing and Hardcore.

Up to Chapter 18 of this now after stalling at 16 for quite some time (for some reason or another, think I just got distracted).

God it's just so long winded and dull. There are some wonderful moments and sections in there, but even after just legging it through massive gun battles because it's just not that good really it's outstaying its welcome.

I'd probably welcome an entire game mod that just removes all enemies and lets me explore and enjoy the environments without the hugely artificial stop start stop start pacing that pervades throughout. Those quiet moments, often filled with little character pieces, have been lovely. But framed against the destruction of an entire private army they lose their edge somewhat.

Pushing through now though - reckon I've got 2-3 hours left. Might as well it out.

Started this a few days ago. And although it look fantastic, it's... a bit of a same-ish sluggish game? I'm not phantastically fond of these types of games, but it's not completely wrong to put it down after, say, chapter 8?

Uncharted 4 seems to be one of the worst cases of hype affecting early impressions and reviews. It got so many 9s and 10s that it became a must have game for PS4 owners. But it does seem that many people who played it after the hype window just think it's a bit average.

Or maybe it's just those people playing now that don't really care about the story...But then, did the story really make this a 9/10?

I really enjoyed both the gunplay and the story. I still play the online Survival mode today, and the characters, script and voice work are among the best in the industry. I know a lot of people who feel the same, but most of them can't be bothered to pop up every time someone on rllmuk describes it as 'trash'. I expect our taste in films to be as divergent as our taste in games, so there's nothing much to say really beyond the obvious. Each to their own.

It's not just the story and presentation for me. I really like the more expansive level design, the gameplay variety and the wonderfully dynamic combat encounters. I do have some issues with it though, which I've detailed in my GotY post. Not sure if it's a 9 out of 10, probably not for me, but it's a good game nonetheless.

There are about 20 or 30 times when you're playing that bridges or rocks collapse underneath you, in a cheap attempt to shock. It's tiresome. You can actually tell when they're about to happen purely because it will not have happened within the last quarter of an hour and you're about to step on a bridge. The climbing sections are repetitive, one dimensional and outstay their welcome after 20 minutes.

Sure the game has decent voice acting and it looks gorgeous but it's just not enough to make up for the barely interactive or scripted sections.

Just wait till you get to this one bit where you have to wander around a mansion looking at stuff. It's genuinely up there with the worst 'gameplay' experiences I've ever had. I only pushed through because I got the game as a birthday present.

Anyway, horses for courses. I guess plenty of people dislike Doom which was my favourite game of the last year and the absolute antithesis of this.

I finished the game through normal, hard then crushing. I couldn't stop playing it and it's absolutely one of the best games of last year. As Gorf King mentioned, then thread has sort of been hi-jacked into a trash talk group and I know that's how discussion of the game is going, so I just leave it. The one part of the game that I really thought needed to be left on the cutting room floor was the Mansion level popping up around chapter 14 or something. It kinda kills the flow.

Disqualifying Uncharted 4 as 'trash' is indeed mad hyperbole. While I can understand it's not to everybody's taste (most likely people who don't like UC4 didn't like the first three games either for the same reasons), it's the product of a team at the peak of its ability. Brimming with detail, visually stunning, every part of the world meticulously crafted. I did have some issues with it. I didn't like Samuel much as a character, I thought the all grown-up Elena-Nate relationship bumps felt out of place in a summer blockbuster game (reaching the summit of a mountain and while the camera pans over a glorious landscape having a discussion about rebuilding trust in their relationship? Ehm...) and some bits were drawn out a bit, the mansion section indeed broke up the pace in an unwelcome way. But by Jesus, for every niggle there were at least a dozen stunning vistas, a range of great gunfights, new exotic locales. It even has lemurs in it for fuck sake. Thrash? Really? I will most definitely play through it again soon.

That's around the point I gave up. I decided I had better things to spend my time on.

Currently playing through this and am up to chapter 13. While it does feel very familiar and, in some instances, repetitive it truly looks out of this world. Like, it genuinely seems like the game came from the future as it looks as if it's a whole console generation ahead of its counterparts. The level of detail put into every little tiny thing is just astonishing and it boggles my mind that they would go through such extreme lengths to get even the smallest of detail right.

The same applies for the character interactions, animation, acting, and writing actually. Naughty Dog have proven themselves to be unrivalled in that regard, even when compared to big blockbuster films. I mean, despite the art direction and aim for realistic visuals, the Uncharted games have always been somewhat of a cartoony affair but this time around every character comes across as genuinely lifelike and wholly believable, right down the the smallest of mannerisms during gameplay and cutscenes. The back and forth between Elena and Drake is the perfect example of this. Even if you would have never played one of these before you'd know right from the start how these two relate to each other. The chemistry seeps through the TV basically. So I'm very much enjoying the moments where the narrative is put front and centre.

That being said the combat is just okay and as far as actual climbing mechanics go it's mainly just a matter of pushing forward. So while I couldn't care less about the actiony parts the Walking Sim™ bits are still quite special though. Case in point: I'm on some island in the middle of nowhere now and while the exploration is limited I wouldn't have minded if the entire game focused more on the Rivening (Mysting?) aspects of it all and less on the obligatory boring cover-shooter variety. My main issues are that the enemies are the definition of bullet sponges, recoil is all over the place, and it's more a case of trial-and-error instead of providing you with a fun combat flow and a sense of immediacy like Doom or perhaps even Gears. I enjoy the parts where you're able to stealth your way through an area but even those are hampered by incredibly poor AI where they will be 1 meter away from you and still don't detect you.

All in all though it's been a lot of fun and am glad I have finally gotten my hands on this. If you were boil it down to its most basic mechanics then I feel it's nothing special but taken on a whole it's quite an amazing experience (/kylebosmanvoice).

This game was superb. The truck chase, as in the gameplay trailer from yonks ago, was such a thrill to actually play through. Such a spectacle. It is comfortably better than 3 and 1, but still not as "special" to me as 2.

I was playing through that yesterday and all the while I simply couldn't believe my eyes. I still have no idea how they ever succeeded into making most of that playable and functioning even. It must've been a nightmare to develop that sequence, my god!
