Yeah they are. Armour-wise, whatever a gladiator can wear a marauder can wear (unless it's paladin/warrior specific, which are the gladiator/marauder jobs, respectively).

I always have a preference for sword and shield type classes but I've yet to find a game that really nails the animations and gets across the fact the shield was a weapon in its own right. Age of Conan came closest, as they used mocap of people who actually know the art of various fighting styles and the shield bash knocked fools flying, 300 style, but it still wasn't perfect. Tera was the best for really capturing the benefit of actually having a shield (having to manually block and the 'hunkered down' animation it used really lent it weight and you could almost feel every impact), whereas in most mmos the shield is just a thing you have on your other hand and occasionally wave about a bit.

I hope in future FFXIV adds some variation into the classes themselves, such as giving gladiators a dual wield dps spec :eyebrows:

Hopefully they'll produce a ninja type class at some point - in XI NIN was a tank and loads of jobs subbed it for the dual wield ability and being able to cast shadows to absorb hits. Would be cool to use dual wield as a cross class ability. Of course this would go nicely with a thief class which better happen or I don't know what I'll do. Moan about it on here I guess.

That's good to hear. And yeah, I bought an Alienware so that I could upgrade the GPU and CPU. I have a new GPU lined up but just need to get my finances straight first.

Which I could buy this on impulse digitally. Nice that shopto have it, but I'll just umm and ahh over that. Whereas if I could go online right now, I'd hit that buy button.

Pungee is selling his digital code in the trading folder if that helps! http://www.rllmukforum.com/index.php?/topic/273562-final-fantasy-xiv-a-realm-reborn-pc-activation-code/

This is really beginning to get silly now, I've been trying since 10 AM to get on with no luck, almost exclusively just hitting start and my characters name, I've been put in a queue and dropped out of it 5 times now, slowly becoming one of the most embarrassing launches I've seen.

Moogle seems to be one of the worst affected :(

Myself and 3 friends have been playing on Cerberus and there's been no issues since last weekend, and another chap I know is on Phoenix and has had minimal issues.

I've been trying to get in since Friday, hasn't let me in once. Total farce.

Bane (the arcanist skill) is pure bloody evil AOE nastiness

I've found it crap to be honest. Half the time it doesn't hit and the pre-cursors for it to work are silly: must have dotted the mob up with all your disease/debilitating dots (most mobs are well dead by the time you have done this) and then you have to have atherflow (on a one min cooldown) on the go.

Far, far easier for a THM/BLM to just use blizzard 2 and AOE the loving Jeebus out of everything.

Weird, i've had the opposite experience. Aetherflow up before a fight, 5 seconds or so to DoT one mob up, Bane, multiple mobs now taking 15s+ of multiple DoTs/debuffs.

I've never been one for ultimate efficiency mind, nor have I played a Thaum so i've no idea how it compares, but it's dam good fun.

Phoenix is mostly ok but has its moments.

Someone posted a gif on Neogaf that seemed to be from an upcoming patch. It was sweet delicious, wonderful inventory sorting. :)

Oh Doctor Shark, you can help me with this. As a Marauder, what stats do I invest in? The mouse over tooltip does not provide me with clear information.

Am I reading the tooltip correctly when I think DEX is only for ranged and those who carry a shield? As a Marauder, is it all about STR and VIT?

Marauders and, by extension, Warriors, have massive HP pools because their style of tanking involves taking the damage and then self-healing it back up. As a result you want to prioritise VIT to increase your HP whilst also getting enough STR to do damage an thus generate enmity. Those are your two priorities in that order. Once you start getting higher level gear you'll want parry, then crit, then determination (a stat that increases all damage and also the amount of HP healed by attacks that heal - which is a big thing for Marauders!).

VIT > STR > PARRY > CRIT > Determination.

Not to piss on anyones parade but what will adding more servers do for me (us) on Moogle? Players have created their characters, joined a linkshell and/or a Free Company and probably reached a high enough level to not wanting starting over.

Mid September there is a server transfer planned but I feel that will be surrounded by restrictions. I'd be happy if they just sort the queue system out. Tell me I am number 30 in line and the waiting time is one hour.

To answer this question:

New servers is a band aid over a gaping wound. They hope that, with their implementation, people who have low level characters, people who are just joining and/or people who don't have a group of friends already established will cut their losses and reroll on a new server. For you it will make little difference, I would imagine, as the number of rats jumping ship due to this will most likely be negligible.

However,

- Implementation of countermeasures to handle the influx of concurrent user counts as a result of split processing the duty finder

- Address several known issues

These suggest that other things are being done - 'countermeasures' suggests an afk kick, which is one of the big causes of the worlds being full. 'Addressing several known issues' is also cheekily ambiguous as it doesn't outright say 'we're going to fix 10102, 90000, 2002, 10107' but if these are fixed as a result of whatever they're doing they'll say 'yeah, we fixed those' and if they don't fix them, they can simply say 'we never said we'd fix those particular issues'. Now we MMO players are a hardy bunch, gladly putting up with things most regular gamers wouldn't (imagine if the new COD released and simply didn't let people play, as FFXIV is doing) but even we have our limits. It's all very well Yoshi-P issuing almost daily apologies but you can only say sorry for slapping me in the face so many times before I punch you back, y'know? Many of us see the free 30 days as an extended trial period and history has taught us that MMOs lose their greatest numbers just before the first month's subscription is due. Now, if SE don't pull their finger out and fix these issues very, very soon - bearing in mind we are now release + 1 week, I foresee FFXIV having the biggest of subs drops in an opening month ever seen which would be criminal as the game itself is good enough in and of itself. We also have to consider the fact that this isn't just any MMO release - this is the second release of an already troubled game. How many games have you ever seen get second chances? I can't think of a single one! It will be really interesting, simply from a curiosity perspective, to see how this all plays out.

Oh, one other thing; most big game sites these days do 'review in progress' type things for MMOs due to the nature of the genre, which scores coming a week or two after first release. If they write their review as a 'should you buy this game or not', I can't see FFXIV doing particularly well because the answer would probably be 'no, not now'. I only hope they give the game the time it deserves (if they can get in, that is) and do the review from a standpoint of the gameplay and fun with the addendum that there may be issues. Would be sad to see this game tank hard after the clear love and effort that's gone into fixing it from the first cock up.

With regards to the server transfers it will be interesting to see if they allow JAP - NA/EU given that a lot of people went to the Japanese servers in an effort to actually get some time with the game, or insist they reroll on the servers closest to them.

A +1 for the good Doctor.

And Dex?

As a complete guess, it is unlikely that any high level MAR/WAR gear will feature DEX but if it does, it would be a distant last place based on what I currently understand of the game, stats and mechanics.

Today I found a great way to get XP.

I was in Costa Del Sol, and area where 5/6 fate's regularly pop up. I was invited into a party of eight people and spent the next couple of hours farming them. I went from 31 to 34 and made about 8k Company Tokens.

Well for the last 2 days I don't even get the word start to light up. One time it did and I got to the server list, there were no servers or characters listed :-)

I hope there are still some low level people around when I can get online. Don't all end up being level 40+

i actually managed to get on for a little while this morning. but it wasnt as easy as i'd expect on a weekday morning.

so annoying as its the perfect game to dip into for half an hour every so often. if it would just let you.

i've paid for a game that will only let me play it for the next 30 days. i expect i'll play it a hell of a lot less than most people anyway, but i need to feel like i'm getting something for my money. if it was a normal single player game that was broken i wouldnt care, but my time is ticking down now.

Yeah I saw that, I was interested initially as I'm still waiting for my boxed copy (no idea why it's taking so long) but I resent someone taking advantage of the shortage to make a profit - no way he paid £20 for it.
