Pickford should be retrospectively banned.

If that’s true it makes the fact Pickford got away with it absolutely scandalous and I doubt he can be retroactively banned because that only happens if the ref didn’t see it which he obviously did. This means Fabinho at center back for most of the season the and hoping Alisson recovers faster than expected.

I don't believe the 'ref saw it' clause is there any more, so retroactive action is possible and should be applied here.

For some reason for both Van Dijk's and Mane's offside decisions the Liverpool line was drawn from half way along the players arm.

The Mane one is nothing to do with going frame by frame from when the ball is played is it? Look at the red line in the picture, its coming from Mane's arm.

Last time I checked you can't score with your elbow. So Mane being offside there is ridiculous.

Isn't the point being the handball rule was changed so that handball is from the bottom of the sleeve, and the line was drawn from the bottom of the sleeve.

Season is going to have to be damage limitation at this rate. Has this been confirmed?

He’s been sent to a specialist according to the Echo. Left hospital on crutches, which is standard procedure but would be surprised to see him play until next season given Pickford’s full weight hyperextended his knee.

Injuries happen, and expect this of all seasons will see plenty more sadly, but seeing such a reckless challenge go unpunished is galling to say the least. There have been shockers in the derby on both sides but usually get carded.

Not really arsed by the result, just a massive downer seeing such a key player taken out so crudely.

Fingers-crossed Thiago is just heavy bruising, he looked so, so good yesterday and added a whole new dimension to the midfield.

However long he's out for I expect Fabinho to the first choice center back with either Matip or Gomez alongside him until van Dijk returns. The hole this leaves in midfield will hopefully be filled by Thiago assuming his injury isn't serious.

That’s one plus; lots of midfield options to cover Fabinho dropping back. Did look at free agents at CB but pretty slim pickings at the minute. If VVD is, as expected, out until next season, wonder if there will be a move for short-term cover? Suppose it depends on how the season is panning out by then.

Devastating for VVD on a personal level, a big blow for the club too. There's no doubt it makes us weaker, even if he hasn't really looked imperious at all post-lockdown.

I wonder if Klopp will continue with the high line now our best defender is out (plus having poor backup GK) and perhaps drop 5/10 yards deeper now? Teams with real pace - I thinking Tottenham when Bale is fit to go along with Song as they are on at the moment - could have a field day otherwise.

We'll have to revert to second season Klopp and start scoring 6 when we concede 4

Villa game would've been great for the neutral if you'd done that.

7-9 scoreline, yes please.

Do wonder what the highest scoring game will be this season. Chelsea Leeds in a few weeks has potential.

The club won't make a rash decision (unlike Pickford ) so I can't seem them picking anybody up from there. I guess it will depend on how the season is looking in January - if we're effectively out of the title race by then I doubt anybody would come in. But if we are still challenging in the league and/or Europe then perhaps a deal for Koulibaly might be sought - although probably unlikely. Every club with a potential target would know they had all the power in negotiations and I don't feel the board would allow themselves to be held to ransom. Time for one of the youngsters to step-up!

We won 14 games by a goal last season, so losing the core largely responsible for that tightness at the back - Allison & VVD - is going to hurt a lot, no doubt. We'll just have to start banging them in for fun instead, I guess. :)

No one has a good defense this season and it's not like Liverpool were rock solid at the back before his injury. Alisson should be fit again by the end of the month and the team will have to make do. On the positive side if Liverpool do win the title without van Dijk it will make City's excuse last year that Laporte's injury was the only thing keeping them from challenging seem ridiculous. But knowing our luck we'll lose to Ajax in midweek and Brewster will score a hatful for Sheffield United at the weekend.

Goals conceded from corners is such a low percentage anyway, something like 3-4%. Set-pieces might be similar, and teams may be more likely to over-commit without Van Dijk, leaving them more susceptible to the side’s blistering counters.

Its shit that VVD is going to be out for a prolonged period, but bar Villa every side as looked ropey at the back this season, and our attack still looks in fine form.

It’ll all be alright in the end.

Now rumours flying around that Matip is injured again.

It will be alright in the end, but we might just have to wait a little longer.

In other news... Water is wet.

I think we now just go ahead and enjoy the season on a game by game basis. Take the entertainment and if we come ourt of it with a tropht, then great. If not, then so be it. I still don't think this season will be completed anyway.

Unless there are squad-wide outbreaks, think the season will shuffle towards a conclusion one way or another.

Agree about enjoying one game at a time though. This season is already wacky with scant regard for defending, so should be plenty more high-scoring games, of which we’ll win some and lose some.

It’s strange. After finally seeing the team win the league, and with far more serious things happening away from the game, feel a lot of emotion has ebbed away. This season feels like hazy escapism but much of the importance I’d normally place on it has evaporated because it is of course not really important at all.

No idea if he's any good but I say we sign Chang-woo Rim just so we can have the CB partnership of Rim Matip
