I don't understand the complaints about lack of creativity thanks to Henderson and Fabinho playing at the the back. The last couple of years those two were part of the workmanlike midfield regularly bemoaned for their lack of creativity.

They provide a stable base upon which to build. With Henderson and Fabinho in midfield Robertson and TAA both can push higher up more frequently. The team’s press can start further forward and potentially win back possession in much more dangerous positions. There is visibly more of a willingness to take risk with them in midfield, probably because knowing that after Fab and Henderson, there’s also another layer of security in the form of Van Dijk alongside Gomez/Matip.

Playing two first choice midfielders out of position exaggerates the loss of our first choice CBs, unbalancing the side.

Mourinho speaking before the Spurs game about how losing your defence and how it affects how the whole team operates was spot on. VVD and Matip in defence with Fabinho protecting just allowed the team to play freely in attack, allowed the wing backs to push forward without worrying about losing possession. Even if you’re set up similarly mentally without that lot behind you start double guessing, playing safer to risk not losing the ball, playing with the thought in your head that you may have to chase back more. IMO we had the heart of the team ripped out this season, you’d have had to have been very opportunistic to not imagine it would be a real struggle in periods.

I appreciate all of the above and agree with it too. But the complaint was a lack a creativity, which is total bullshit.

My thoughts on today's game are City will win by a couple. They have shored their defence up since the beginning of the season and Liverpool simply don't look good enough.

Stop worrying about top 4! Anyone who finishes above us wins it, and that looks like City at the moment but it has taken an incredible run from them to get there. Leicester don't have enough, Spurs have already Spursed it, and Man U won't get away with their luck forever. Even if they do, we're still 3rd.

Today is almost a free hit, which is unheard of at Anfield. We've got more than enough out there to score 5, even against them. As long as we do our thing, we'll come good at some point, so why not today?

The creativity isn’t through them, their positioning alters the effectiveness of the rest of the team’s creativity. We’re almost mirroring what happened to City last season when they had to shift players around and it affected their overall output.

Think when Kabak starts, possibly alongside another CB with Fabinho and Henderson in midfield again, we’ll see Thiago/Gini/Jones further forward, as well as TAA and Robertson going closer to the opposition byline rather than crossing from in line with the edge of their penalty area.

So we're talking about the efficacy of the press rather than actual creativity?

The press is a factor, and so is the change of positioning and/or effectiveness of the side’s more creative players.

Why do we always go forward and then can’t run pass the last player to get a cross in we end up going all the way back to Allison. So frustrating.

It looks very deliberate today. It's part of a plan. Whether it works out not remains to be seen.

Trent Alexander Arnold has been the best Liverpool player today, dealing with Sterling and still getting forward to create the best chances so far. He struggled earlier in the season coming back from injury but he is back to his best.
