The ref on the field gave that penalty. What you need to find as an actual comparison is any other penalty which the ref deemed not to be a foul that VAR then requested him to look at again. There may well be some, but none I can think of at the moment.

EDIT: Looking into this, I found an article on ESPN that is, to say the least, eye-opening! https://www.espn.com/soccer/english-premier-league/story/4182135/how-var-decisions-affected-every-premier-league-club-in-2020-21

Sorry I am not sure I understand your point? Surely the point is getting the right decision? and if the foul on Salah against West Ham was a pen then the Welbeck one today was a pen as well?  how does the ref not giving it and being over turned factor into the decision being right?

Plus that article is very poor piece, it mentions that Liverpool are -7 for VAR decisions but then includes for example the two offsides todays which makes it seem like you are getting screwed by VAR but the offsides where the right decisions but it also didn't include things like in the Arsenal game where Mane elbowed Kieran Tierney int he face or the Jota Handball, as I would class those as at least debatable, so I stopped reading after that.

Your position is clear, so you won't understand my point. I am asking you to find an example where the on-field referee deemed something not to be a foul, and was then invited to check the screen. A "clear and obvious error" doesn't count, I specifically want a similar judgement call made by the VAR official. I'm not saying none exist, I'm saying I know of none, because there are 19 teams in the division that I don't care about.

I could point to several far more obvious penalties not given by the on-field ref in our matches that VAR saw fit to leave alone. You know of one, too, because unless you were under a rock you saw Pickford on Van Dijk. So, yes, I am saying that it feels like VAR has an agenda against Liverpool. I was in favour of it, and still support the concept, but the implementation is atrocious. It has cost us points this season, and I'd much rather it be binned until it removes subjectivity completely. No argument about the penalty, my argument is that all such penalties aren't being given.

On this... Virgil was offside, so it could never be a penalty. However VAR should have insisted the ref check the collision and decide if a red card was warranted.

Can't believe we're playing again already tonight. Do we have enough fit players to field an 11?!

Been rumours flying around that Alisson is out. Hopefully just people being bored during the last day of lockdown.

Annoying, 24 hours later and there would have at least been some fans in Anfield. A couple might have even been in with a shout of playing.

That's a decent enough team. Kelleher and Williams are the big worries though. Williams needs to begin to improve quickly, he is very young so there are no concerns about his performances up to now but he still needs to show improvement. If he can manage that it'll be a big step in his progression, conversely you only learn about that by playing first team matches.

He is literally a copy of Trent at the same stage of his Liverpool career. We all raved about him in those first couple of matches, then were worried. I think we've seen enough to know that he'll come good!

He isn't. His final ball is never anywhere near what Alexander Arnold was capable of even then.

Don't think he looks that good to be honest.  Certainly not writing him off but he's not giving me Trent vibes.

It was right at him, but he got his hands up quick to stop it.

Squelch.

Sorry.

Plenty of keepers let headers like that in. Adrian at Everton for one.

Queev did well to push it high and away.

Great night for the young players. Jones is clear quality. Williams had a much better game too. Think it helps being in a more regular lineup.

Jones was superb tonight, I've said it before but I think he's ready to step into Gini's shoes.

Williams was tucking in a bit too much in the first half for my liking, letting Neres have too much space (although this is something Trent is often guilty of too) - second half was a different story though, hopefully he'll carry that form forward now.
