How infuriating must this be for Man Utd fans though? Liverpool have been on top for ages and finally there’s a weekend where you can take the piss out of them for getting hammered... except you can’t really.

Wouldn't speak so soon about that. This has the potential to be 7/8.

This is a much, much worse result, performance and shock than the Man Utd result. At least they can say the sending off affected them.

Klopp has nothing to cling to here, this is an absolute disaster.

Actually, the only positive (and I'm reaching here) is that Salah seems to have his shooting boots back (and scored his 100 goals now, which I don't think even got mentioned, did it?) Plus he's been fighting all game, a few times he's been back in his own half trying to defend. Shame nobody else has, etc.

That was a big reality check. You can't blame Adrian for all of the goal because the defense was nowhere for most of them. Alisson is going to be out for a while so we'll have to get used to Adrian in goal but I am now worried about what Everton might do to us in the derby if Henderson and Thiago are still unavailable and Gomez remains a liability.

That might be the worst I've ever seen us play. The entire team shat the bed after that first goal, normally we'd slow the game down at that point and strangle possession, but literally everything was rushed. People will blame the high line, but every aspect of that performance was shocking.

Hopefully they can put it behind them, because we're playing the best team in the country next.

Of all the things that 2020 can deliver, the start to this season is right up there. What the hell is going on? Thankfully it isn't just us. Are we seeing what impact the lack of crowds is having on the bigger sides. Fair play to Everton and Villa, they have started this season like they really want to be on the pitch and winning matches, unlike most of the 'big' teams.

After the first 5 minutes, I didn't think I'd actually be letting Adrian off the hook but, apart from his awful, awful mistake he couldn't really do anything about the other goals (despite what @Pocketsthinks about Barkley's effort). But it was such a weird performance, it looked like they'd never played football before and it seemed they were in slow motion whilst Villa were top-gear. I've never seen anything like it, even in games where we've been absolutely trounced before (Man City 5-0 & 4-0, Man Utd beating us 4-0 when Hyypia was sent off after 5 minutes etc) there's been a period where we stabilised and just looked to not concede any more. Here though it was surreal, never any measure of control or looking to slow play down and keep the score in check.

I'm genuinely stunned, to the point I don't even feel sad because it was such an aberration.

As Watkins is saying, they looked to exploit the high line we play and more and more teams are doing that with some success. A challenge for Klopp to address, for sure.

They were awful against Watford in the 3-0 last season, the difference this time is that Villa are a good side and took most of their chances whereas Watford were a bad side.

I'll qualify that then by saying I missed the Watford game.

I'm not too concerned about it yet, as I said people will mention the high line we play, but playing that way creates a lot more for us than it gives away. It was the team dropping it's principles across the entire pitch that cost us today.

Pretty much the same. It’s a defeat, but also such a freak one that it defies any real logic. Teams have tried to exploit the high line and failed dismally. Villa did an exceptional job against a team that was completely, and inexplicably, shambolic.

It’s one to take on the chin and hope prompts a reaction. No Alisson for six weeks is a worry, but everyone faces injuries.

What a weird, wonderful season already.

The strangest part of it all is that the last couple of matches we have looked utterly dominant in possession, especially so against Arsenal. The defensive mistakes have been there for a while but not the total lack of any control over the game, that we showed last night.

Yeah, Leeds, Chelsea and Arsenal all had their moments in breaching our defence (along with most of the teams in the games post-restart) but last night the midfield was just non-existent, to the point that there were a few times when Salah (!) was running back into our own half as the last defender. It was so utterly out of character that even today I just can't quite comprehend it. Klopp was at least honest about how bad it was, but at the same time could offer no explanation as to why the whole team (bar Salah) was completely off. That to me is a bit more concerning, especially with no time to address now until a day or two before the derby.
